A hint of what’s to come? Blues’ father-son hopeful Cody Walker recreates dad’s famous moment
Hats off to Carlton’s father-son hopeful Cody Walker, who has lit up Blues fan’s eyes with an (accidental?) blast from the past, recreating his dad’s famous training moment.
It’s almost summer and Melbourne turned on a decently warm day today, prompting Cody Walker to don a hat for Carlton’s training session at IKON Park, in a familiar sight for Blues fans, (IYKYK).
“[Cody’s] wearing a hat,” Instagram users pointed out when the images arose.
The excitement around Cody’s hat stems from a Herald Sun story and photo 14 years ago which highlighted the fact his father Andrew was wearing a cap during a pre-season training session.
The story showcasing the audacious move caused a stir online.
“I cannot believe it, this will shake the league to its core,” one Reddit user joked of Andrew Walker’s hat-wearing in 2011.
“Hopefully [the hat] won’t destabilise the team during preseason,” another added.
“His contract should be torn up immediately! No place for [hat wearing] in the game.”
On the ten year anniversary of the Herald Sun’s Andrew-Walker-hat coverage, Carlton ran a half-price sale on all headwear - will any deals arise to celebrate Cody’s momentous outing today?
While the 2025 AFL Draft remains underway - with the Rookie Draft taking place at 3:20pm (AEDT) - Carlton has its sights firmly set on Walker as a father-son selection in 2026.
Walker, son of Andrew, is projected to be a top selection and Carlton are poised to pounce.
Almost 14 years after his dad went viral for wearing a hat at a pre-season training session, Cody has been spotted following in his footsteps.
Its 2026 draft hand now includes two first round picks, two second round picks, a third and a fourth-round pick in the wake of last night’s pick swaps.
Walker, who graduated high school last month, was spotted at IKON Park this morning donning both a hat and his Dad’s number one guernsey.
It might just be a not so subtle hint as to who will fill the number in the future, which was made available by Jack Silvagni’s exit.
He completed drills alongside fellow father-son Ben Camporeale, providing a glimpse into the Blues’ engine room of the future.
