SOLD OUT: Tickets to Launceston AFL elimination finals snapped up within minutes

Tickets for this weekend’s AFL finals matches have sold out within minutes, but there may still be hope for fans that missed out. LATEST >>

Tasmanian footy fans were quick to snap up tickets to this weekend’s AFL elimination finals with both games at Launceston’s UTAS Stadium a sell out.

Punters sold out the matches in just a few hours with hopefuls scrambling to see their sides make history, playing finals in the state for the first time.

Although both games are currently limited to 10,000 spectactors the government is reviewing a request by the AFL to increase the crowd capacity with Public Health expected to make an announcement later this week.

The Sydney Swans go head to head with GWS on Saturday and the Western Bulldogs vs Essendon on Sunday at 3:20pm.

AFL finals festival for Tasmania

TASMANIA will be the centre of the AFL world next weekend when it hosts two finals for the first time in the state’s history.

Launceston will be the venue for both elimination finals across the weekend, with the all-Sydney derby between the Swans and the Giants on Saturday, followed by the Western Bulldogs-Essendon game on Sunday to round out the first week of finals.

And the Mercury understands there is a possibility of more finals to come, depending on results of other games.

Tasmania’s ability to allow teams to fly in and fly out on the same day without quarantining and to have crowds has given the state a front-row seat to its first ever finals.

At this stage, the crowds will be limited to 10,000 with fans to follow Covid protocols and wear face masks.

Launceston’s UTAS Stadium will be graced by some of the AFL’s biggest names — Marcus Bontempelli, Lance Franklin, Toby Greene and Jake Stringer — in their biggest matches of the year.

The decision was made to play both finals in Launceston rather than splitting them between UTAS Stadium and Hobart’s Blundstone Arena so broadcasters wouldn’t have to transfer their equipment between matches.

It will be the second time this season the Bombers will play in Tasmania after previously not visiting the state for 30 years.

Their clash against Hawthorn on June 20, also in Launceston, sold out in less than three hours when there was still a 15,000 capacity for the stadium.

Tickets will go on sale to club members on Monday, with the AFL introducing a price freeze of $35 for general admission.
