WHAT injury curse?

Every year in SuperCoach we steer clear of some players based on their injury history and the assumption they will break down at some stage.

The only problem is this year three of those players make the top 20 in the post-bye instalment of Nissan SuperCoach power rankings.

ROUND 11 STUDS AND DUDS

“Burn men” Aaron Sandilands, Robbie Gray and Shaun Higgins all come with big risk but right now they are delivering big rewards — and their bodies all seem to be staying in one piece.

Scores are obviously a major factor in the rankings but not the only one. Recent form is at a premium and we’ll also factor in what might unfold in the next few weeks and value for money.

Did we get the top 20 right? How many are in your team? Leave a comment below.

NISSAN SUPERCOACH POWER RANKINGS

1 Gary Ablett (GC) $710,500 mid

Avg 141.7

An all-time SuperCoach great having his best season. Showed he was mortal with a Liam Picken-affected 75 in Round 10 and was below his best again last weekend but still scored 130. First choice for captain every week. Has kicked 20 goals, more than anyone else on this list.

2 Scott Pendlebury (Coll) $641,300 mid

Avg 130.1

Metronomic midfielder just never plays a bad game. The perfect one-two punch with Gazza. No.3 in the comp for disposals and makes the top 15 in just about every category you can imagine.

3 Josh Kennedy (Syd) $657,600 mid

Avg 122.8

With Pendles, Beams and Rockliff, JPK is a genuine captaincy alternative to Ablett (or at least a VC loophole candidate). Scored 91 in Round 1 and hasn’t looked back, scoring triple-figures in every game since and averaging 133 since Round 5. Leads the AFL in disposals with three more than Ablett.

4 Tom Rockliff (BL) $628,100 mid

Avg 127.5

In fewer than 20,000 teams but rockets up the rankings after a monster 182 against Carlton, lifting his past three round average to 149. No.2 in the AFL for tackles.

5 Dayne Beams (Coll) $587,400 mid

Avg 121.2

I played a private league opponent at the weekend who didn’t have Beams in their side — how does that happen? There was plenty of hype around him pre-season and he has more than justified it with a low score for the year of 103.

6 Aaron Sandilands (Frem) $550,300

Avg 115.2

Clearly the No.1 ruck in the comp and the bargain of the year. If anyone tries to talk you into trading him out, ignore them.

7 Kade Simpson (Carl) $594,200 def

Avg 109.2

The biggest bolter on the list has proven clearly the best bet for the bye rounds defensive upgrades, averaging 134 over his past three.

8 Robbie Gray (PA) $559,700 mid/fwd

Avg 108.0

Recorded his seventh 100-plus score in a row against the Demons to be the most reliable forward out there. Has the second-highest average of all forwards behind Patrick Dangerfield but way more consistent. We’re finally seeing what he can do with an injury-free run.

9 Jobe Watson (Ess) $583,300 mid

Avg 114.6

Back at the top of his game, averaging 134 in his past three. When was the last time you saw him make a mistake on the field?

10 Tom Liberatore (WB) $641,900 mid

Avg 117.0

Last year was the breakout season, this year Libba is in the elite bracket of midfielders. Some started to lose faith after a three-week century drought from Rounds 4-6 but since then he hasn’t scored under 125. A great get.

11 Callan Ward (GWS) $573,500 mid

Avg 113.3

Contested ball machine and my buy of the season — I picked him up when he somehow dropped under $500k a month ago and he has averaged 128 since then. Equal No.1 in the comp for clearances with Ablett.

12 Kieren Jack (Syd) $582,600 mid

Avg 109.7

The forgotten man of the Swans’ surge. Hasn’t scored under 110 since Round 4.

13. Brendon Goddard (Ess) $532,700 mid

Avg 104.9

Take out his injury-affected 11 and his average is 118.2. If you didn’t jump on last week, he’s still gettable — don’t miss out.

14. Tom Langdon (Coll) $416,000 def

Avg 82

Has gone up $299,300, overtaking Jared Polec for the No.1 price rise in the game. The incredibly impressive 19-year-old has a break-even this week of 109 but you wouldn’t bet on him not making it, especially if Alex Fasolo stays in the forward line.

15 Nathan Fyfe (Frem) $583,800 mid

Avg 114.5

Hurt himself early against the Dogs and his 76 was his first sub-100 score of the season.

16 Marc Murphy (Carl) $555,500 mid

Avg 113.5

His club is on the nose but it isn’t the skipper’s fault. Proved his high scoring ceiling again against the Lions with his third score over 145 for the year.

17 Patrick Dangerfield (Adel) $613,000 mid/fwd

Avg 113.9

Has five scores over 100 and five under 100 for the year but you just have to have him on the chance he punches out a 192 (Round 5) or 152 (Round 9). Awesome to watch in full flight.

18. Joel Selwood (Geel) $565,100 mid

Avg 117.0

Slowed down after is freight train start to the season but showed he’s still got it with a 140 against Fremantle. Would prefer to see 105s on his quiet weeks instead of 80s.

19. Dom Tyson (Melb) $492,200 mid

Avg 95.7

After a mini-slump Tyson has bounced back to average 116 over his past four. If you kept him and traded Polec, well done.

20. Shaun Higgins (WB) $436,700 fwd

Avg 86.8

Has gone up $182,000 but why would you trade him when he averages 97 over his past five? So much for the injury curse (touch wood).
