Last week three players picked six of the nine topscorers, with Patrick Dangerfield, Todd Goldstein, Gary Ablett and Luke Parker all popular selections. The toughest to get right was Eagle Luke Shuey but even 49 entrants took a punt on him (unfortunately they didn’t get the others right!)
If you’re already a SuperCoach player you can register for Perfect 9 using the same account so it’s a click of the mouse every Friday to finalise your SuperCoach team then pick nine players for a shot at the prize.
If you haven’t signed up for SuperCoach you can still play Perfect 9 and claim some of those office bragging rights, and all it takes is a few minutes’ work — or just take a wild stab, what have you got to lose!
So who should you pick this week? Here are our top candidates for every game.
WEST COAST v RICHMOND
Matt Priddis (50 per cent) is the most popular pick so far and fair enough — he averages 111 v Richmond and scored 112 and 149 in his past two games against the Tigers. Nic Naitanui (20 per cent) is averaging 115 this year and scored 146 against Richmond at the MCG last year. Josh Kennedy is always a Perfect 9 option because we know he can score huge especially at home. But his record against Richmond isn’t great; 82 is his highest score against the Tigers since 2013. Based on recent history the best Tigers bet is Dustin Martin who scored 148 against the Eagles in their most recent meeting. Bachar Houli could surprise after scoring 127 and 144 in his past two games but steer clear of Trent Cotchin — he averages just 82 in his eight games v West Coast.
ESSENDON v GEELONG
It’s one-way traffic here with 81 per cent of entries so far nominating Patrick Dangerfield. It’s hard to come up with an argument against that given he has scored 162 and 166 already this year and racked up 157 against the Bombers last year. If Danger flops Joel Selwood is a big chance. He returned to his best last weekend, scoring 142, and averages 120 in his past three against Essendon. David Zaharakis has been in great form for the Bombers this year and has a decent record against the Cats, scoring 98 and 115 in his past two.
HAWTHORN v ST KILDA
The punters’ choice is Sam Mitchell with 60 per cent of selections. He has topped 130 twice this year but his record against the Saints is modest, although that is impacted by a 2014 game when he hurt his hamstring in the first five minutes and scored just nine points. Teammate Josh Gibson is capable of massive scores (191 two weeks ago is exhibit A) and he does have a 142 against the Saints in the bank from that 2014 game. A wildcard is Leigh Montagna who scored 150 last week and his past three against the Hawks look like this: 128, 144, 129.
SUPERCOACH STUDS AND DUDS: Who starred, who flopped in Round 3
BRISBANE LIONS v GOLD COAST
If you have never played Perfect 9 before, a good starting point is to lock in Gary Ablett every week. Last week he was the topscoring player in Gold Coast’s win against Carlton and he’s likely to back that up against the Lions, a team he has a career average of 131 against including a 182 the last time they met. If it’s not Ablett there’s every chance it will be Aaron Hall, who scored 134 last week (one behind Ablett’s 135) and had 150 last time he played Brisbane. The Lions’ best hope might be ruckman Stefan Martin who has an excellent average of 122 in his past three against Gold Coast.
CARLTON v WESTERN BULLDOGS
This is a tough game to pick with plenty of Bulldogs capable of putting up a big score. Tom Liberatore has been picked by 19 per cent of players but averages just 92 against the Blues. Jason Johannisen burst out of the blocks with big scores in the first two rounds but is a bit of an unknown quantity, for what it’s worth he scored 97 against Carlton last year. Jake Stringer is another option but he scored just 68 in that game. Luke Dahlhaus, who put up a 154 against the Hawks, fared even worse that day (58). Liam Picken scored 120 and Matthew Boyd posted 148 — and 125 against the Blues in 2014. If you want to punt on a Blues bolter Bryce Gibbs scored 131 against the Dogs last year and Jacob Weitering topscored for Carlton last week with 129. Could he improve on that in game four?
ADELAIDE v SYDNEY
The match of the round throws up lots of possibilities led by Luke Parker, the second-top scoring player in SuperCoach this year. He averages 117 in his past three against the Crows. Dan Hennebery scored 134 against Adelaide last year, Tom Mitchell posted 130 in that game and Lance Franklin is also a candidate but he might find the going tough against Michael Talia. Eddie Betts is in a similar position with lockdown specialist Nick Smith his likely opponent — in his past three against Adelaide he has scored 44, 40 and 33. Yuck!
GWS GIANTS v PORT ADELAIDE
All the way with Robbie Gray. The Port star is averaging 126 so far this year and scored 131 and 121 in his past two games against the Giants. Callan Ward is another option, he averages 113 in his past three against the Power including a 145 in 2014.
COLLINGWOOD v MELBOURNE
Scott Pendlebury is a safe choice — he averages 100 against Melbourne and 100 this year. But will that be enough to claim the jackpot? Adam Treloar averages 112 against the Dees mainly on the back of a 176 in 2014, and Taylor Adams posted 110 against them last year. Could Ben Kennedy fire against his old side? Max Gawn scored 98 against the Pies last year but after a 172 last week who’s to say he couldn’t explode again?
NORTH MELBOURNE v FREMANTLE
This might be a game where we throw the history book out the window. Todd Goldstein scored just 44 against the Dockers last year but he was demolished by Aaron Sandilands, who sadly is still in hospital nursing a collapsed lung. You can back in Goldy, who scored 172 last week, to do a lot better against Jon Griffin or Zac Clarke. Nat Fyfe is the other popular pick (22 per cent of selections behind Goldstein’s 66 per cent) and with good reason — he averages 123 against the Kangaroos.
