Across Australia, SuperCoach aficionados are finalising their wish lists.

We’ve put together some handy tips and a list of need-to-know players to help you pick the best team possible.

Don’t have enough people? Doesn’t matter! Get involved in a public league and let the fun begin.

1. THERE’S NO SALARY CAP

This probably goes without saying but pick the best players available. No need to worry about a “Guns & Rookies” or “Mid-pricer” strategy here. In Draft, the likes of Matthew Broadbent, Chris Mayne and Tom Scully become late-round draft picks. They’re consistent scorers that provide much-needed depth. Veterans are more likely to score consistently than a draftee.

2. BALANCE YOUR TEAM

There’s not much point having a killer midfield if you’re stuck with mid-range forwards and defender. It’s important that your first few picks get the best talent available but also the best talent across all four positions. Remember, there’s always more depth in the midfield than in the other areas, so choice wisely and fill out your team evenly.

3. DON’T DISCOUNT ROOKIES

OK, so we’re kind of contradicting ourselves here. After saying rookies don’t necessarily score well, there’s always an exception to the rule. The likes of Jacob Weitering, Callum Mills and Clayton Oliver put in some promising performances over the NAB Challenge. Cheapies Sam Kerridge, Ben Kennedy and Daniel Wells should also be considered.

4. SWING SOME TRADES

Trading takes on a whole new meaning in SuperCoach Draft. It’s like the AFL Trade Period except it lasts all season. With every team unique, you can’t always pick up the player you want. If you want a rival’s player offer up a trade of one of your stars and let the bartering begin.

5. WATCH THE FREE AGENT LIST

It’s safe to say you probably won’t pick your Round 23 team in Round 1. SuperCoach superstars are sure to pop up throughout the season - Sam Gray and Aaron Hall last year for example - and the free agent list is ground zero for Draft League warfare. Keep an eye on rising scorers and get them in before your rivals to give your team the upper hand in weekly match-ups.
