WHO starred and who flopped in Round 5? We review every game to find the SuperCoach performers and failures.
HAWTHORN 112 def ADELAIDE 109
Hawks studs: Paul Puopolo (151) played his best game in brown and gold with five goals, including the matchwinner with 20 seconds left. He shared the spoils with Cyril Rioli (109) who kicked four classy goals and laid 10 tackles. Shaun Burgoyne (97) was a quiet achiever in his 300th game.
Hawks duds: Harsh call on Sam Mitchell, who was one of the Hawthorn’s best, but 87 points from 31 disposals doesn’t cut it in the cut-throat world of SuperCoach — 24 uncontested possessions and a 68 per cent disposal efficiency hurt the bottom line. Josh Gibson (59) hardly touched the ball in the first half, not what you want from a premium player. Jordan Lewis (57) had 20 disposals but was ineffective.
Crows studs: Midfielders Rory Atkins (103), Rory Sloane (103) and Scott Thompson (101) shared the load with 86 disposals between them. Sloane, however, would have been disappointed not to have racked up a bigger score after 11 disposals and 44 points at quarter-time.
Crows duds: Eddie Betts (56) had three goals on the board and 36 points after the opening term but was well held after that. Fellow forwards Taylor Walker (66) and Josh Jenkins (55) had little impact in the second half after kicking two goals each before halftime.
SYDNEY 88 def WEST COAST 49
Swans studs: Ted Richards (130) came within a whisker of ruining our Perfect 9 chances with a brilliant performance that included a goal from outside 50m. Luke Parker (129) racked up big numbers as did Dan Hannebery and Tom Mitchell. Callum Mills finished with a personal best 94 points. Tom Papley (78) responded after a couple of quiet weeks with a nice score.
Swans duds: Isaac Heeney (52) played a bit-part role, conditions didn’t suit big men Callum Sinclair and Kurt Tippett.
Eagles studs: Jeremy McGovern (134) was the highest scorer on the ground, while Nic Naitanui (115) did what he had to do to give his side the edge around the stoppages.
Eagles duds: Tough on Matt Priddis (87) but we expect more from the ball magnet. Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Eric Mackenzie bathed in mediocrity.
GOLD COAST SUNS 81 def by NORTH MELBOURNE 119
Suns studs: Can’t look past two-metre Peter. Peter Wright’s 142 points was the biggest on the ground, with his 17 disposals, eight marks and three goals a breakout performance for the big mna. Matt Rosa (114) was good with 29 disposals, while Michael Rischitelli (102) rewarded his owners. Injured early but Gary Ablett battled on for a respectable 100 and Aaron Hall managed 90.
Suns duds: Not sure if anyone has Luke Russell in their side but he only managed 15 points, while popular rookie last year Touk Miller (42) didn’t reach great heights. Trent McKenzie (43) has been a mid-priced bust, while Kade Kolodjashnij (77) was disappointing.
North studs: As he does almost every week, Todd Goldstein top scored for North Melbourne with 125 points after 18 disposals, 24 hit outs and two goals. Nick Dal Santo (119) was excellent in the midfield, as was skipper Andrew Swallow (113). Ben Brown (110) booted four goals and Jarrad Waite (103) got two. Jack Ziebell also tonned up with 101 and Brent Harvey recorded a respectable 92.
North duds: He’s good in defence but Sam Wright (42) didn’t register many SuperCoach points and ben Cunnington (56) is in strike for kneeing Gary Ablett in the back. Daniel Wells is averaging 100 but was lucky to reach 80 points on Saturday.
WESTERN BULLDOGS 120 def BRISBANE LIONS 67
Dogs studs: Mitch Wallis was the standout for the Dogs with 134 points after 33 disposals and seven clearances, while Koby Stevens (123) wasn’t too far behind. Matthew Boyd (121) led the way off halfback in the absence of Bob Murphy. Ruckman Tom Campbell (104) had a night to remember, while Toby McLean (103), Luke Dahlhaus (103) and Lachie Hunter (102) tonned up. Tom Liberatore (96) didn’t disappoint his owners.
Dogs duds: Matthew Suckling (17) hurt his knee early in the game and tried to come back on before being put on ice. Shane Biggs was a popular trade-in option to replace teammate Jason Jahannisen but didn’t light it up, with 77. Liam Picken was popular last year but only managed 74 points.
Lions studs: Dayne Zorko (102) seems to score 100+ every week and Saturday night was no different. Former Kangaroo Ryan Bastinac (102) was the only other Lion to register three figures. Daniel Merrett (95) and Harris Andrews (90) were surprise high-scorers.
Lions duds: Allen Christensen (23) suffered concussion early and Tom Cutler (29) dislocated his shoulder. Tom Bell (42) didn’t use the ball well, running it just 47 per cent efficiency from 19 disposals. Stefan Martin (69) battled after that KO last weekend.
PORT ADELAIDE 59 def by GEELONG 107
Power studs: Ollie Wines found some form with 24 disposals, 10 tackles and 128 SuperCoach points. He was the most traded in rookie last week and Darcy Byrne-Jones didn’t disappoint, managing 103 points. Matthew Broadbent (99) and Jasper Pittard (96) were OK.
Power duds: Where for art thou Robbie Gray? Only 11 disposals and a dismal 53 SuperCoach points. Chad Wingard (36) was barely sighted and we might be being harsh but Travis Boak (88) isn’t having a great year. Hamish Hartlett (63) only had 11 disposals. Sam Gray (45) hasn’t reached the heights of late last year.
Cats studs: How about this for a dynamic duo? Joel Selwood (144) and Patrick Dangerfield (137) led the Cats to victory will stellar performances after quarter time. Rhys Stanley (120) had one of his best games, Mark Blicavs (115) was in good form and so was Mitch Duncan (112) who seemed to have the ball on a string at times. Harry Taylor (105) and Cam Guthrie (102) also tonned up.
Cats duds: Andrew Mackie (41) had just the 10 disposals but admittedly, the ball wasn’t in the Cats defence too often. Cory Gregson (45) didn’t kick a goal and Zac Smith (54) was disappointing again.
ST KILDA 79 def by GWS GIANTS 126
Saints studs: Nick Riewoldt continues to power on and got St Kilda back into the game last in the third quarter with two quick goals. He finished with a team-high 125 points. Shane Savage (101) was good off halfback and booted two goals, while David Armitage (99), Jack Steven (93) and Seb Ross (93) didn’t disappoint.
Saints duds: Leigh Montagna (82) was on track for a big score at half time but was kept quiet in the second half and then finished the game on the bench with ice on his hamstring. Jack Lonie (28) didn’t have an impact and neither did breakout candidate Jack Billings (34).
Giants studs: Welcome back Heath Shaw. The former Pie’s third quarter set up a huge score of 132 as he was a brick wall in the GWS defence. Toby Greene (129) had it on a string and booted four goals, while Steven Coniglio had 32 disposals for 127 points. Tom Scully (118) continued his good form and racked up 31 disposals, while Nathan Wilson (98), Steve Johnson (95) and Shane Mumford (95) recorded good scores. Dylan Shiels was OK for 92 points.
Giants duds: Lachie Whitfield (36) kicked a crucial goal but didn’t do much else, while we expect more from popular midfielder Ryan Griffen (84) and forward Devon Smith (67).
FREMANTLE 68 def by CARLTON 72
Dockers studs:Michael Barlow (128) played a lone hand in the midfield with 32 disposals and 14 tackles. Lachie Neale (104) was next best with 35 touches and nine clearances while Lee Spurr and Michael Walters were the only others to score in triple figures.
Dockers duds: Nat Fyfe (53) suffered a suspected cracked fibula and took no further part in the game after half time. Tommy Sheridan (62) was hardly sighted.
Blues studs: Kade Simpson (129) setup the go-ahead Bryce Gibbs (121) goal, while Patrick Cripps, Sam Kerrdige, Matthew Wright, Marc Murphy and Ed Curnow all tonned up.
Blues duds: Matthew Kreuzer (37) had just the five disposals, while Zach Tuohy (46) and Jacob Weitering (61) were unable to convert handy games in defence into a good score.
MELBOURNE 129 def RICHMOND 96
Demons studs: Max Gawn (160) set a cracking pace with 120 points to halftime but his scoring dried up as Richmond midfielders started roving his tapwork. Jack Viney (144) went from strength to strength and willed the Dees over the line. Dom Tyson and Dean Kent kicked clutch goals to secure the victory.
Demons duds: Ben Kennedy failed to register a possession in the third quarter but got his hands on the ball in the last to sneak into the 50s. Disappointing. Jesse Hogan (46) finished with just two behinds.
Tigers studs: Jack Riewoldt (114) tried his guts out to no avail as did Trent Cotchin (106) who finished with 32 disposals. Nothing more to see here, unfortunately.
Tigers duds:Alex Rance (87) score OK but his brain explosion at the death was simply inexcusable. Will miss week(s).Youngsters Corey Ellis (29), Connor Menadue (36) and Daniel Rioli (41) provided little to smile about, while Kane Lambert (42) and Bachar Houli (46) combined for seven clangers.
COLLINGWOOD
Magpies studs: Steele Sidebottom (166) owed the Pies a big game and he delivered with 33 disposals and four goals to pocket the Anzac Day Medal. Scott Pendlebury (131) also had a day out against the Bombers with 35 disposals, six marks and four clearances. It was a massive day for the Magpies with five other players passing the ton — Aex Fasolo (118), Taylor Adams (118), Adam Treloar (115), Jarryd Blair (102) and Jordan De Goey (101).
Magpies duds: James Aish (43) had a quiet first half and struggled again. Travis Varcoe (49) sat out the second half after aggravating his troublesome hamstring and is doubtful to take on the Eagles this week.
Bombers studs: Brendon Goddard (106) was one of the few Bombers who could hold his head high with 25 disposals, five marks and six tackles. James Kelly (100) keeps rising in value after reaching triple figures for the fifth time this season and Orazio Fantasia (101) continued his consistent start to the season.
Bombers duds: Zach Merrett (53) had a shocker, but we can excuse him for one bad game. Forward Joe Daniher (43) was starved of opportunities and Martin Gleeson (39) had four clangers among his 16 disposals.
