All roads lead to Max Gawn when picking a captain in SuperCoach this week.
But if you don’t have Max, there are more great options.
Exclusive stats from Champion Data reveal how many points each team concedes in each position – allowing SuperCoaches to target the most lucrative match-ups (and avoid the toughest ones) when picking a C or VC and making those crucial selection calls.
Fresh off a 174-point game against Richmond (when he spent the last 10 minutes on the bench), Gawn faces the Eagles on Saturday night at Optus Stadium.

West Coast has given up more points in the ruck than any other team this year – by a big margin – and when we hone in on just the games featuring Matt Flynn, the picture is even clearer.
In his two appearances in 2025, Flynn’s opponents have scored 144 (Jarrod Witts, round 1) and 161 (Lloyd Meek, round 7) SuperCoach points.
The one slight worry is West Coast was the best match-up for rucks last year, too, and Gawn scored 100 and 109 in his two games against the Eagles. But this is about as close to a sure thing as you’ll get.
However, if you’re not convinced – or one of the 81 per cent of coaches who don’t own Gawn – don’t despair.
WHO TO TARGET THIS WEEK
Rucks v Geelong, Richmond, Essendon: The next two easiest ruck opponents should benefit Darcy Cameron and Lloyd Meek. The Bombers are rated as a hard ruck match-up based on points conceded over the first seven rounds, but most of those featured one or both of Sam Draper and Nick Bryan. Last week was Todd Goldstein’s first appearance as solo ruck this year, and he gave up 125 points to Darcy Cameron. Expect Tristan Xerri (three-round average 128) to go large again on Thursday night.
Midfielders v Melbourne, West Coast, Richmond, Collingwood, Adelaide: The two leakiest midfields face each other – last week the Eagles gave up almost 2000 SuperCoach points to Hawthorn, including 11 scores of 95 or more. Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca should cash in this week.
Jai Newcombe (162 v Richmond last year) is a left-field captain option and Henry Hustwaite has every opportunity to produce a good score in the same game, while Bailey Smith, Sam Walsh and Adam Cerra all have positive match-ups this week. Geelong (Nick Daicos), Port Adelaide (Marcus Bontempelli) and St Kilda (Andrew Brayshaw, Caleb Serong) are neutral midfield match-ups; Daicos scored 89 against the Cats last year and Bontempelli scored 106 in his last game against Port Adelaide.
Brayshaw could break though, however. He’s on a hot streak as the No.1 scoring player in SuperCoach this year and averages 126 in his past three against the Saints, who gave up 139 points to Lachie Neale last round.
General defenders v Gold Coast, St Kilda, Richmond, Collingwood, Fremantle: Dayne Zorko scraped a ton last week but he has 138 and 160 in his past two against the Suns, who rank 18th for points conceded to general defenders. The Saints have given up points to running defenders for a long time – this could be a big week for Jordan Clark – while Jack Sinclair and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera should also score well – if they play in the D50.
WHO TO AVOID THIS WEEK
Midfielders v Brisbane, Gold Coast, Western Bulldogs: The three hardest midfield match-ups by the numbers, but we wouldn’t bet against Lachie Neale or Zak Butters (who scored 159 against the Dogs last year) putting up a big score. Maybe leave them out of the captaincy equation this week, though, just in case.
Rucks v Brisbane, Sydney, Port Adelaide, Adelaide: These four teams have all been hard for rucks to score against in 2025 – a red flag for Tom De Koning owners.
General defenders v Carlton, GWS, Essendon: This could be a tougher week for Matt Roberts, Riley Bice, and potentially Harry Sheezel.

STATS DROP: SHEEZEL ROLE SHIFT, SAINTS CBA CHAOS
It was the boom Harry Sheezel owners were waiting for.
A 135-point return against Port Adelaide has powered the North Melbourne young gun back into the conversation for the top defenders in SuperCoach – and a role change could be behind the spike.
For the first time this season, Sheezel did not attend a centre bounce in round 7.
The return of George Wardlaw and boosts for Luke Parker and Jy Simpkin allowed Sheezel to do his best work on the outside – and take four kick-ins, after taking just one in the first six rounds.
He is just one interesting name in this week’s Champion Data stats dump – search below for every player’s CBA, kick-in and time on ground numbers.
St Kilda’s midfield had a big shake-up at the weekend as a frustrated Ross Lyon searched for answers to Brisbane’s onball dominance.
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera attended 53 per cent of CBAs and Jack Sinclair was at 23 per cent – both season highs.
Meanwhile, Josh Dunkley attended a season-low 50 per cent as Hugh McCluggage jumped above him in the CBA pecking order at the Lions. Dunkley’s price is down to $529,800 with a three-round average of 90 and a Break Even of 129.
Another player of high interest to SuperCoaches this week is Chad Warner, who earned MID-FWD status after spending lots of time forward in the first six rounds. But since then his role has changed, attending 70 and 78 per cent of CBAs in the past two rounds.
