SuperCoach AFL 2024: Your updated guide to the best players in every position with Dossy’s Double Dozen

Who should you target for the run home? Check out updated predictions of the best players on every line by SuperCoach expert Dos – as heard on The Phantom’s Lair Podcast.

SuperCoach AFL Buy, Hold, Sell Round 13

Dossy’s Double Dozen is back!

Version 2.0 of my SuperCoach ‘Best 22’ (plus two extra to make the name work) arrives just in time to help with your trade plans across the bye rounds.

Positional rankings are in order of the players that I believe will average the most from this point to the end of the season to help prioritise your targets – just be sure to factor in price, Break Even, upcoming fixture, and your unique bye structure when making your trades.

Agree/Disagree with the Double Dozen? Who missed out? Who would you replace? Let me know in the comments below.

DEFENDERS

Nick Daicos, Luke Ryan, Harry Sheezel

Jeremy McGovern, Jordan Ridley, Jordan Clark

IN: McGovern, Ridley, Clark

OUT: Yeo, N. Martin, Young

Nick Daicos and Luke Ryan are the standout top-two defenders in SuperCoach and must-haves in your final team. Completely different players in their respective positions, both can find the footy at will and use it efficiently, all while exhibiting extreme thirst for the pill.

Harry Sheezel dismissed any doubt that he wasn’t a SuperCoach keeper following his move to the midfield after scoring 117 and 119 in his last two games before the Roos’ bye. The 19-year-old is a ball magnet wherever he plays, and now comes at a discounted price due to the brief role adjustment.

Elliot Yeo’s low time on ground following injury means he falls out of the Double Dozen for the short term, but teammate Jeremy McGovern takes his spot. Taking bulk kick-ins and commanding the Eagles defensive 50, he’s looking like a marginally less thirsty Luke Ryan.

Perhaps I’m jumping the gun on Jordan Ridley. He comes straight in for Nic Martin following two 110-plus scores on his return from injury. Early signs suggest that the inclusion of Ben McKay is finally allowing him to freewheel in defence. I still think Martin will be solid, but with the extra mouth to feed and occasional magnet shuffles from Brad Scott, he may not be ‘top six defender good’.

Three for three teammate swaps in the Dub Doz! Jordan Clark comes in for Hayden Young following a three-round average of 137 SuperCoach points. Clark is fresh off some super easy match-ups for his position but is feasting in the Dockers kick-mark happy game style.

In the mix: Dan Houston, Max Holmes, Elliot Yeo, Hayden Young, Nic Martin.

MIDFIELDERS

Marcus Bontempelli, Caleb Serong, Zak Butters, Lachie Neale

Adam Treloar, Matt Rowell, Zach Merrett, Chad Warner

IN: Neale, Treloar, Warner.

OUT: Dawson (just missed), T. Green, Dunkley

Marcus Bontempelli, Caleb Serong, and Zak Butters are the only midfielders averaging over 120 SuperCoach points in 2024. Prioritise them whenever you have the coin. The Bont, in particular, killed non-owners against the Pies on the weekend in the battle of the GOATs with 186 points. Invest ASAP if you’ve survived to this point without him.

Fresh off a Brownlow, Lachie Neale is putting up a vintage season – averaging seven points better than 2023 despite the Lions’ struggles. Meanwhile, fellow 31-year-old Adam Treloar is putting up career-best numbers in a relatively new-look Bulldogs midfield largely without Tom Liberatore. Treloar comes with obvious injury risk, but the numbers are too good to ignore this deep into the season.

Zach Merrett and Matt Rowell survive the cut in the Double Dozen despite a light month since the last edition. Merrett has scored under 100 only twice this season – both in the past month – and is still a great buy target. Rowell, the best tackler in the AFL, should thrive as we enter the wet season. I still see both going 110-plus on the run home.

Chad Warner explodes into the top eight mids following an incredible five-week run which included three scores over 130 and a massive 172. I understand, we don’t get those points if we bring him in now, but Warner is looking like an unstoppable force in an even more unstoppable Swans midfield.

In the mix: Jordan Dawson, Jack Steele, Tom Green, Sam Walsh, Josh Dunkley, Patrick Cripps.

RUCKS

Max Gawn, Tim English

IN: Nil.

OUT: Nil.

A pretty straightforward line. We’ve had our fun with Grundy, Xerri, Jackson, even dare I say a Sweet, Meek, and Moyle … but Max Gawn and Tim English are the End Game.

If you are a Grundy, Xerri, or Marshall owner, I’d be leaving the ruck line as your last upgrade unless the gap from them to English widens faster than anticipated (and beware, it could).

In the mix: Rowan Marshall, Brodie Grundy, Tristan Xerri.

FORWARDS

Sam Flanders, Isaac Heeney, Dayne Zorko

Zac Fisher, Luke Jackson, Dylan Moore

IN: Fisher.

OUT: Rankine.

Sam Flanders, Isaac Heeney, and Dayne Zorko are the top three forward targets by a long, long way – and, barring any injuries, it will stay that way (still a fair concern for the latter). The trio are averaging 10-20 points more than the next best available forward and don’t look like slowing down.

Zac Fisher has taken the glorious North Melbourne half-back role that has proved to be SuperCoach gold for a few years now. Fisher has to be taken seriously. His three-round average of 123 is the best among all forward eligible players and he’s still under $500k before round 13.

Luke Jackson once again makes the cut almost by default. His ceiling will always keep him in the mix, especially when (not if) Sean Darcy misses more games. Dylan Moore is fresh off a career-high 169-point outing after a very light month prior. Moore is enjoying the most centre bounce attendances of his career while still hitting the scoreboard.

I strongly believe that Izak Rankine will be a top-six forward upon his return from injury, further solidified with Matt Crouch missing the rest of the season. I just can’t include an injured player in the Dub Doz (I’ve learned my lesson with Elliot Yeo), but if you’re ready for your final forward upgrade, I’d hold off until Rankine returns.

In the mix: Izak Rankine, Charlie Curnow, Harley Reid.
