IT PAYS to be bold. That’s the lesson from almost 69,000 Gary Ablett trades last week.
The first results are in and the happiest coaches were those who went outside the square when finding a replacement for the SuperCoach champ.
The most popular trade last week was Crow Rory Sloane, who scored 103 against Collingwood — not a disaster, but his 9994 new owners would have been hoping for more.

The next two most popular picks were total busts, with Dan Hannebery (68) and Lachie Neale (76) frustrating more than 17,000 combined new owners.
The most popular pick you could call an unqualified success was Marcus Bontempelli, who was No. 6 on the Ablett trades list and delivered his fifth score of 120-plus in six games.
AL PATON AND BEN HIGGINS REVEAL THE BEST, WORST AND WEIRDEST ABLETT TRADES IN THIS WEEK’S EPISODE OF THE SUPERCOACHES BOX PODCAST:
After another bust in Jack Steven we get some ticks in Joel Selwood and Zach Merrett, but the best choices were Swan Josh P Kennedy (541 trades, 140 points) and GWS co-captain Callan Ward, who scored a monster 143 and left almost $100,000 in the bank from the Ablett move.
And if you’re grumpy about Hannebery or Neale, spare a thought for the 242 coaches who traded Ablett to Michael Barlow — who was on track for another big score before being forced from the ground just after halftime with an AC joint injury.
At least he scored something. That SuperCoach enthusiast moping around the office today may be one of the 446 who traded Ablett for Rory Laird, who pulled out of Adelaide’s game against Collingwood on Friday — after the first lockout of the round, which disables the reverse trades button. Ouch.
Then there were the totally left-field trades. One player traded Gary Ablett to Essendon top-up player James Kelly — who scored 98. The same can’t be said for the one player who traded Ablett for Dennis Armfield (64), Ben Keays (57) or Angus Brayshaw (68).
ABLETT REPLACEMENT SCORECARD
PERFECT 9
It was another tough week for Perfect 9 players. Each of the top nine scorers for the round was picked by at least one entrant — including Stephen Hill, who edged Patrick Dangerfield by one point on Friday night — but getting all nine proved a mountain too high to climb.
That means the jackpot this week is $95,000!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: SHAUN BURGOYNE
Burgoyne played a key role in Hawthorn’s thrilling win against the Swans, reaching a season and round-high 159 SuperCoach points, of which 77 were recorded in the final quarter. He hit the target with all 11 disposals in the last term, finishing with 26 for the match from 86 per cent game time. CHAMPION DATA MARKET WATCH
Dustin Martin
Martin ran rampant against the Bombers, recording career-highs of 43 disposals, 22 contested possessions and 14 clearances on his way to 152 SuperCoach points. He hit the target with 23 disposals, also recording four tackles and a combined 10 inside-50s/rebound-50s from 89 per cent game time. He also hit the scoreboard with two goals and was involved in eight scoring chains.
Sam Docherty
Docherty’s 138 SuperCoach points against the Eagles was his sixth score of at least 120 this season. He found plenty of the ball, gathering 32 disposals, 12 marks, 13 handball-receives and a team-high 24 uncontested possessions from 92 per cent game time. He covered plenty of territory and gained a game-high 580m.
Alex Rance
Rance finished with a season-low 67 SuperCoach points against the Bombers, suffering a $15,100 price drop. His poor discipline cost him points, recording a team-high three free kicks against. He finished with 18 disposals, nine marks and only four contested possessions from 100 per cent game time.
YOUNG GUN: CHRISTIAN PETRACCA
Petracca’s 84 SuperCoach points against the Saints was his best return since Round 12, but despite that haul he still dropped in value by $7700. He finished with 19 disposals, nine contested possessions, eight handball-receives and six inside-50s from 88 per centgame time. He also recorded two goals, one score assist and six score involvements
