Stats insider: Full round 22 centre bounce numbers, key SuperCoach intel

Get the intel you need to make the best SuperCoach calls this week, including a surprise move for a Gold Coast gun and the numbers behind Luke Ryan’s return to form.

What is Dimma playing at?

Sam Flanders has been one of the success stories of 2023, averaging just under 117 SuperCoach points playing across half-back and then as a full-time midfielder.

But with three rounds to go in the season, Damien Hardwick pulled off a total role change with Flanders spending 100 per cent of game time against Essendon as a forward.

His 22 disposals was an equal season-low, he took a season-low one mark and failed to reach 100 SuperCoach points for only the second time this season.

Flanders did kick two goals, but attended zero centre bounces after he was at 23 the week before against West Coast. The void was filled by Alex Davies, whose CBAs spiked from zero to 20.

The dramatic move could put Flanders’ chances of being a DEF-MID in 2025 in danger.

In other key stat moves last weekend:

JACK Sinclair played the entire game against Richmond in defence and did not attend a single centre bounce. He had 29 disposals at 93 per cent efficiency and scored 123 SuperCoach points.

ZACH Merrett attended 89 per cent of CBAs for the Bombers, his highest rate since he was at 100 per cent in round 13. Jye Caldwell was at 50 per cent, down from 67 a week ago.

TOM Green was at every centre bounce against Brisbane, the first time this season he has achieved that distinction.

LUKE Jackson’s CBAs spiked after Sean Darcy’s late withdrawal, but it didn’t translate into a big SuperCoach score as Jackson finished with 81 points despite winning nine hitouts to advantage.

DAN Curtin has played all over the field early in his career, and on Sunday he attended 13 centre bounces for the Crows. He replaced Jake Soligo, whose CBAs dropped from 22 to three, while Dawson’s fell from 21 to 13.

HARLEY Reid moved out of West Coast’s midfield rotation, with his CBAs dropping by 70 per cent in the win over North Melbourne. His 28 per cent CBA rate was his lowest for the season.

MATT Roberts has become Sydney’s No.1 kick-in taker, playing on from all nine of his kick-ins against Collingwood.

COLBY McKercher took 11 of North Melbourne’s 12 kick-ins, and played on from all 11. Luke McDonald took the other one.

GWS had 16 kick-ins against the Lions but Lachie Whitfield took only three of them, down from seven the week before. With Lachie Ash (seven) and Harry Himmelberg (six) taking over, Whitfield’s score of 97 was his lowest since round 11.

HEENEY’S QUARTER FOR THE AGES

Isaac Heeney had 18 disposals, three behinds and 60 points to his name at three-quarter time against Collingwood - then he exploded.

He collected 14 disposals, six contested possessions, three clearances, four inside-50s, one score assist, one goal and 83 points in the final term.

His score of 144 SuperCoach points was his highest since round 5.

GRUNDY’S PERFECT PLAY

Brodie Grundy and Errol Gulden both failed to crack three figures at the weekend but the stoppage goal to take the lead late in the final term was great viewing.

Gulden’s goal was worth 12.6 points, while Grundy’s hitout-to-advantage netted him 7.8 points, plus a further 5.5 points for his goal assist.

LUKE WHO’S BACK

Luke Ryan has snapped out of his form slump in spectacular fashion, ending a month of sub-100 scores with 126 points against Essendon and 156 against Geelong.

When Ryan has volume, he generally scores well. He has had 30-plus disposals in each of his past two games – taking nine and 15 marks in thar order. The last time he took nine marks was in round 12, while his previous 30-disposal games prior to this was back in round 11.

He has also won 22 and 25 disposals in the defensive over the last two rounds, which has attributed to his scoring.

The Dockers also had 19 backward kicks on the weekend – their third-most this year.

TAGGER WATCH

Toby Bedford claimed another victim on the weekend, conceding 19 disposals in the 95 minutes he was matched up on Lachie Neale.

Caleb Serong has been tagged five times this season, while Andrew Brayshaw has run free.

Bedford is a lock to follow Serong on Saturday.

Stat of the Week – Dropped mark

Dropped marks are one of the various negative stats in SuperCoach.

A dropped mark is an uncontested marking opportunity that is dropped, resulting in a contest at ground level. This does not include marking contests with an opposition spoil.

Dropped marks inside 50 are recorded as clangers, however, they are only clangers in all other areas of the ground if you drop the mark and don’t pick the ball up again uncontested at ground level.

A player attributed with a dropped mark loses four points from their score.

Key-position players usually dominate this stat with Aliir Aliir, Mabior Chol and Harry McKay having 11 apiece.

Kyle Langford, Nick Larkey and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan have recorded 10 each.

Jordan Dawson’s six dropped marks are the most by any midfielder, with Errol Gulden and Jhye Clark with five apiece.
