Has Geelong found its future midfield?

The retirement of Joel Selwood and injury-interrupted seasons from Patrick Dangerfield and Cam Guthrie (four games each this season) have forced Chris Scott to try a long list of potential onballers this year.

In total 10 Cats have had at least 30 per cent CBAs this year, four more than clubs like Brisbane and Fremantle. But the pieces are starting to fall into place.

Max Holmes starred off half-back early in the season, spending 8 per cent of game time in the midfield in first nine rounds. In the past two weeks that figure has jumped to 66 per cent. Since making the move he is averaging 31 disposals and 5.7 clearances.

Jack Bowes has played all over the field this year, and he started as the sub in round 11. But on Saturday night he attended 69 per cent of centre bounces, equal with Holmes and Tom Atkins and up from just 4 per cent the week before.

And he destroyed the Tigers, finishing the match with 29 disposals, nine clearances (six from centre bounces), 14 contested possessions, eight tackles, a goal and 146 SuperCoach points.

Holmes, meanwhile, has a three-round average of 123.7, the fifth-best of any defender in SuperCoach.

CRAIG McRAE tried something new at the Magpies, throwing Beau McCreery into the centre square for 17 CBAs.

ADELAIDE’S centre bounce mix is a watch after news Matt Crouch will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. Max Michalanney got his first taste of CBA action for the season last round, attending 12 against the Hawks.

ELIJAH Hollands’s CBAs have spiked to 53 and 55 per cent the past two rounds. He scored 92 SuperCoach points against the Power.

JACK Sinclair was back in defence for the Saints, recording a 45 per cent drop in CBAs. Seb Ross hasn’t been at a centre bounce since round 9.

SINCLAIR took two kick-ins, while Riley Bonner’s kick-ins dropped from six in round 11 to one against the Eagles.

LUKE Ryan (10 to two) and Jeremy McGovern (nine to five) also saw huge drops from the previous round, but it didn’t hurt their SuperCoach output. Ryan scored 124 and McGovern 113.

BAILEY Dale took 100 per cent of the Bulldogs’ kick-ins against Collingwood. He played on from eight of the 10.

NOTE: Movers and sliders table is based of player’s most recent performance. Minimum two games in 2024 to qualify, but the two games can be weeks apart.

Secret SuperCoach stats

Each week Champion Data guru Fantasy Freako lifts the lid on the SuperCoach scoring system by analysing key moments from the weekend games. Here are the numbers you need to know from round 12.

NICK v BONT

Nick Daicos and Marcus Bontempelli faced off in one of the great SuperCoach head-to-head battles on Friday night.

Daicos was consistent across all four quarters, scoring at least 30 points in each. His second term was the most productive with 49 points made up of 12 disposals (eight effective), seven contested possessions, three clearances, one tackle and one goal.

Bontempelli was serviceable in the first three quarters before exploding in the final term with 14 disposals (10 effective), six contested possessions, five clearances, four tackles, one score assist, one goal and 89 points.

His most productive act of the match was a goal in the final term which earned him 10.4 points. He had only three negative acts for the match, where he lost 8.3 points.

DARCY’S BIG RECOVERY

Sam Darcy began the same match with two negative acts and found himself in the negatives by 10.5 points before getting into the game. Of his remaining 35 acts in the game, just one was negative and he ended with a solid 81 points.

Darcy scored 17.4 points from his three goals.

HARLEY STALLS

Harley Reid could hardly have had two more contrasting halves in round 12.

At halftime he was the No.1 ranked player on the ground with 73 SuperCoach points made up from 14 effective disposals, nine contested possessions, seven clearances, five inside-50s, six tackles and one score assist.

It all went pear shaped in the second half as four of his last six acts of the match resulted in negative points – losing 15.2 in total. He was the equal bottom-ranked player on the ground in the second half with -2 points.

SuperCoach points are constantly updating to normalise at a 3300 total. In this example, points were awarded assuming that 1650 points should be awarded in the first half when calculated live, but due to the game tightening up, more points were awarded in the back half of the match and the original points awarded in the first half were normalised to be less valuable.

TIGER’S VANISHING ACT

Richmond rookie Kane McAuliffe was the third-ranked player on the ground with 62 points at halftime against Geelong from 10 effective disposals, 10 contested possessions, four tackles and one score assist.

But he added just six points to his score in the second half from just two disposals – scoring none in the final term.

GOV RISES

Jeremy McGovern had just 28 points to his name in the first half against the Saints.

He woke from the slumber in the second half with 13 disposals, seven intercept possessions and 86 points – ranked second on the ground.

All 24 acts for McGovern were positive after halftime – scoring 7.5 points from a contest mark in the final term.
