KFC SuperCoach: The best and worst Round 4 performances

There wasn’t much stopping Travis Cloke at his peak, and the powerful forward gave the Tigers a bath back in Round 4, 2013. And he fell agonising close to a monster KFC SuperCoach milestone.

KFC SuperCoach TV episode 2

With no week-to-week KFC SuperCoach action to feast on, we have been reliving the best – and the worst – SuperCoach performances from that respective round in history.

There are sure to be a host of classic names that will give you your footy and SuperCoach nostalgia fix.

As Round 4 is slated to be played this weekend, we bring you the most rousing fourth round SuperCoach displays of all-time.

BEST ROUND 4 SUPERCOACH SCORES

One of the golden rules of SuperCoach is to steer clear of key position forwards.

But looking back at the best Round 4 performances of all-time, two tall forwards populate the top-three scores.

Atop the list is former Collingwood spearhead Travis Cloke for his rampaging display against the Tigers in Round 4 of 2013.

Cloke could not be stopped by a lacklustre Richmond defence, clunking 14 marks – six of those contested – and booting seven goals in a dominant 197-point SuperCoach performance that Pies fans, and Richmond fans for that matter, won’t soon forget. He also won 20 possessions and had 15 score involvements.

Those that jumped on the Cloke bandwagon got their just desserts, copping scores of 64 and 36 in his next three games.

Now we move onto a monster score that will delight the Tiger Army, from their favourite son no less.

Richmond fans saw the evolution of Matthew Richardson from a powerful forward to a roaming wingman in 2008 first hand, and this was perhaps his best game in the role.

Richardson amassed 25 disposals, 15 marks (5 contested) on his way to a formidable 178-point total against Fremantle, the third highest Round 4 score under the current scoring model.

It is no surprise to see superstar Gary Ablett in second spot, generating a lazy 46 possessions, three majors and 196 points in Round 4 of 2009.

Beyond that trio comes several SuperCoach stars who all topped the 170-mark in Round 4. Tiger defender Joel Bowden (177 points in 2009), then fantasy pigs Tom Rockliff (176, 2017) and Dane Swan (170, 2013).

Carlton bull Patrick Cripps has two massive fourth round scores to his name – in two different countries. In Round 4, 2015, Cripps registered a mammoth 172 in just his sixth game of senior footy against St Kilda in Wellington, along with a score of 170 in Round 4 last year.

Roos stars Brent Harvey (169) and Ben Brown (168) round out the top-10.

OUT-OF-THE-BOX ROUND 4 SCORE

Scott D. Thompson (North Melbourne) — 165 points vs Brisbane (Round 4, 2013)

Combative defender Scott D. Thompson was often the man responsible for spoiling our SuperCoach weekend by shutting down a key forward. In the fourth round of 2013, Thompson turned from SuperCoach villain to SuperCoach hero with a surprising 165-point total. Thompson finished with 25 disposals 13 intercept possessions, 10 marks (five intercept marks) and in true Thompson fashion, 10 spoils.

WORST ROUND 4 SCORE

Nick Maxwell (Collingwood) — 4 points vs Carlton (Round 4, 2008)

Opposition supporters loved to hate long-time Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell and his Round 4 outing against the old enemy in 2008 pleased the hecklers. Maxwell ended the day against Carlton in single figures across the board – seven touches, five tackles, three frees against, three spoils and four SuperCoach points. Making matters worse, Maxwell spent every minute of the game on the ground.
