KFC SuperCoach AFL: Tim Michell reveals his team for 2022 season

KFC SuperCoaches only have three ruck spots and if you’re risking one on Braydon Preuss, you need a back-up plan. Tim Michell reveals his insurance policy and early 2022 team.

SuperCoach Mumma makes history

I’m going back to my KFC SuperCoach roots.

Top-111 would be nice.

Top-11 would be even nicer.

But realistically, after going close to the top-1000 in the past few seasons, it’s time I accepted I’m a rung below the big dogs in our favourite fantasy game.

I’m not someone who can spread hours crunching numbers or staring at spreadsheets and never will be.

Which is why I’m focusing on why we all sign up for KFC SuperCoach each year — the fun of it.

This initial team reveal — and my subsequent team reveal closer to the season — will be all about picking players I love watching.

Where’s the fun in hoping a player you love gets tagged out of a game just so you win a league match-up?

Of course, the great KFC SuperCoach prizes are wonderful.

But KFC SuperCoach is about so much more than that.

It’s about giving yourself reason to enjoy Fremantle v GWS in a Saturday twilight timeslot because Andrew Brayshaw has 25 disposals at halftime.

Or staying up until 11.30pm to watch the end of the Q Clash and willing Lachie Neale to his 40th disposal.

It’s about banter with mates. Sledging over league wins. And eating chicken.

This team reveal won’t be for everyone. In fact I’m sure some hardcore players will hate it.

But I love it and ultimately that’s all that should really matter in KFC SuperCoach.

DEFENCE

The two premium defenders I enjoy watching most are Caleb Daniel and Lachie Whitfield, hence them being locked in at D1 and D2. Daniel can flick a switch and rack up points like few can and Whitfield’s running ability is unmatched. I got on the wrong end of Changkuoth Jiath’s three bad weeks last season before trading him out and ruing it. Hawthorn will be absolutely stacked for ball users at the back but this guy is something else. He scores points at a rate I can’t ever recall before. One touch can equal almost 10 points because of the way he wins the ball and the Hawks love to transition the footy out of defence through him. James Sicily has never let me down in KFC SuperCoach and I spent the last few rounds last season fuming I didn’t have trades left for Jake Bowey. He’s in and I’m tipping he gets to $350-$400k after showing he’s one of the best ball users Melbourne has in seven games. I watched Garrett McDonough’s lethal left boot for West Preston in the northern footy league and hope he plays early.

MIDFIELD

The value in this line is outrageous. To fit them all in I had to forego Josh Ward — who Dan Batten tells me is a Rising Star contender — and choose between Touk Miller, Jack Macrae and Clayton Oliver. Clarry burns me every year when I don’t start him, so he gets the nod. Sam Walsh and Andrew Brayshaw are two of my favourite players and Lachie Neale is just way too cheap to ignore. Matty Rowell could be anything with a proper pre-season, ditto Jade Gresham and Jarrod Berry has averaged 90+ before. I’ve gone Nick Daicos over Ward as I like he’s going to play halfback. I’ve picked the Gresh Prince of St Kilda as a midfielder to give my team some extra flexibility.

Rowan Marshall finished last season with a scoring rampage.

RUCKS

Braydon Preuss is going to be one of the biggest pre-season talking points again and he will have has Matthew Flynn and Kieren Briggs breathing down his neck. Plus Mummy if he decides to play again. Seriously, don’t rule it out. At just over $200k, I’m willing to take the risk on Preuss if he starts for the Giants. We all know he can score prodigiously when he plays in the middle. I flirted with Jarrod Witts for R2 but Preuss allows me to pick Luke Jackson as a forward, which means if Preuss is omitted I have cover without burning a trade. Rowan Marshall was the one that got away last year. I won’t make that mistake twice even though I am still flat he’s not DPP again. I’m over picking Grundy and Gawn and am ready for something new.

Luke Jackson’s DPP is enticing.

FORWARDS

Stephen Coniglio is a free hit at that price, Cam Rayner is a joy to watch and the two big guns – Dunkley and Duncan – are consistently big scorers. I’d love Tim Taranto who has been with me through the good and bad in the past two years but fitting him and Coniglio isn’t easy. Zak Butters and Luke Jackson fit my key category as players I love to watch and want to be cheering for in 2022. Elijah Hollands could be the best rookie of the season. Hopefully Gold Coast’s patience in the top-10 pick pays off.
