Does tackle pressure win you an AFL spot?
If the answer is yes, Kynan Brown is a walk-up start for Melbourne’s clash against GWS on Saturday.
The 19-year-old had a record 24 tackles for Casey Demons in the VFL, along with 27 disposals, 11 clearances, 19 contested possessions and a goal.
The performance was worth 186 SuperCoach points, and it could have been more – only five of Brown’s 16 kicks hit the target and he didn’t take a mark.

Brown has made two AFL appearances this season, both as the sub, scoring 21 and 15 SuperCoach points. But he already features in almost 50,000 teams and could provide valuable bench cover as coaches are hit by injuries late in the season.
Melbourne might look to make changes after a 50-point loss to Fremantle, although the Dees did win the tackle count in that game 50-32, and inside-50 tackles 14-4.
If Max Gawn doesn’t get up from his leg injury this week, young big man Will Verrall had 45 hitouts, 18 disposals and 108 SuperCoach points for Casey. Former bargain SuperCoach defenders Blake Howes (116) and Marty Hore (111) both topped the ton.
Brown’s SuperCoach return wasn’t the highest from almost 200 AFL-listed players to feature in the VFL, SANFL and WAFL on the weekend.
That title goes to Carlton’s Jaxon Binns, who blew up the stats sheet with 216 SuperCoach points from 47 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 13 marks, nine intercept possessions and three goals. He has played one AFL game, in round 7 this year, when he started as the sub and had two disposals.
One of the most interesting stat lines from state league action was by a player who is not yet on an AFL list, but no doubt will be by the end of November.
Top-10 draft hope Jagga Smith made his first VFL appearance for Richmond, one club that will be strongly considering the midfielder on draft night.
Smith didn’t do his chances any harm, scoring 125 SuperCoach points from 31 disposals, 18 contested possessions and two score assists.
“He’s a real likeable kid and he was really grateful for the opportunity to be here. And the boys really enjoyed having him a part of our group,” VFL coach Steve Morris told the Richmond website. “I think we’ve got him for another couple of games and, hopefully, he continues that great form that he started in.”
Smith outscored the Tigers’ four senior listed players available for selection in the VFL – forwards Jacob Bauer (two goals, 63 SuperCoach points) and Matt Coulthard (12 disposals, 24 SuperCoach points), defender Jacob Blight (77) and ruckman Oliver Hayes-Brown (30 points from three disposals and 18 hitouts).

DAN Curtin is building towards a return to senior action for the Crows, scoring 95 SuperCoach points from 21 disposals and six score involvements. He has now scored 90-plus in his past five games.
CALEB Daniel can’t do much more to push for an AFL recall. He scored 179 SuperCoach points from 32 disposals, 18 contested possessions, eight clearances and eight tackles.
MASON Cox warmed up for a likely AFL return with 11 disposals, four marks, 23 hitouts (five to advantage) and 76 SuperCoach points in the VFL.
PADDY Dow scored 117 SuperCoach points for Sandringham from 32 disposals, 11 clearances and eight inside-50s.
SEAMUS Mitchell has fallen out of Hawthorn’s best 23 but he could be back soon after racking up 160 SuperCoach points for Box Hill from 33 disposals, nine marks and five tackles.
FORGOTTEN Swan Angus Sheldrick had 29 disposals for Sydney plus nine clearances and a goal for 112 SuperCoach points. Sheldrick burst onto the AFL scene in 2023 with a run of 90-plus SuperCoach scores, but he hasn’t broken through for a senior appearance in 2024.
