AFL SuperCoach: Studs and duds for Round 11 AFL action

FROM Rockliff’s 200 to Libba’s late heroics and missing Montagna. Who starred and who stunk in Round 11 SuperCoach action? Studs and duds from every game

WHO starred and who stunk in Round 11 SuperCoach action.

Tom Rockliff suffered a bout of leather-poisoning in Brisbane’s heavy loss to Carlton, while an inspired Joel Selwood led Geelong to victory over GWS.

Daniel Wells got the Kangaroos off to a flying start on Friday night.

KANGAROOS 124 def TIGERS 54

Roos studs: Daniel Wells (138) clearly best on ground with 29 disposals including three goals. His first quarter was massive put paid to the Tigers well before injuries made it a no-doubter. Brent Harvey (127) wound back the clock with four goals of his own, while Nick Dal Santo (126) and Jack Ziebell (106) did not stop working hard through the midfield. Drew Petrie bounced back (106), while Andrew Swallow (99) was stiff not to score better with 28 disposals, 11 tackles and 10 clearances.

Roos duds: Jarrad Waite was all the rage earlier in the year but the big Kangaroos forward could only must another mediocre (74) score.

Tigers studs: Shaun Grigg (120), Anthony Miles (115) and Trent Cotchin (115) led the way in an ugly night for Richmond. The trio never stopped trying in the face of extreme pressure.

Tigers duds: That’s two stinkers in a row for Brandon Ellis (28) against the Roos after he was again blanketed by Sam Gibson. Was hardly sighted and finished with just seven disposals. Dustin Martin (74) got going late but it was not enough to boost his score beyond dud status.

HAWKS 82 def DEMONS 64

Hawks studs: Jack Gunston (102) finished with three goals, while Sam Mitchell (94) — who laid seven tackles — is trending back in the right direction after a few lean weeks.

Hawks duds: Ben McEvoy (45) had a tough day chasing Max Gawn around the MCG. Brad Hill (59) and Cyril Rioli (65) struggling in trying conditions.

Demons studs: Dom Tyson (142) led the way with 32 disposals and six tackles. Bernie Vince (130), Max Gawn (115) and Nathan Jones (111) fought hard in the clinches. Jack Trengove (60) did enough in his first game since Round 2 2014 to suggest he could be a solid downgrade target.

Demons duds: Jesse Hogan (58) struggled against Hawthorn’s rock-solid backline. Clayton Oliver (69) was solid with 18 disposals.

BLUES 102 def LIONS 64

Blues studs: Ed Curnow (141) laid 12 tackles, while Sam Kerridge (126) had a field day in the Carlton midfield. Jacob Weitering (121) demolished Josh Schache.

Blues duds: Sam Docherty (79) had a let-down game after starring over the past four weeks. Bryce Gibbs (42) felt the wrath of ex-teammate Mitch Robinson, while Matthew Kreuzer (25) did not come back after half time.

Lions studs: Tom Rockliff (204) must have brought his own ball — career-high 48 disposals — to the game, while Mitch Robinson was the only other Lion in triple figures. Expect Jarrad Jansen (98) to be one of the most popular selections this week. Brilliant debut. Dayne Zorko (97) fell three points short of his ninth consecutive ton.

Lions duds: Allen Christensen (21) busted his collarbone and will miss four weeks. Jackson Paine (22) hardly fired a shot, while Lewis Taylor and Tom Bell might want to avoid coach Justin Lepptisch during the week. Daniel Rich (78) frustrating as usual.

CATS 98 def GIANTS 88

Cats studs: When it mattered the most, Joel Selwood (150) stood up. The fearless Cats skipper dragged his side across the line with a blistering last quarter effort. Can’t help but feel Patrick Dangerfield (124) is on the verge of a monster 180-200 game if he can get his goalkicking boots on. Zac Smith (117) won the ruck battle, while Jimmy Bartel (115) oozed class in slippery conditions.

Cats duds: Tom Ruggles (34) held his own up against the most dangerous man on the ground — Steve Johnson — while Harry Taylor could only manage 48 points. Steven Motlop (56) had another stinker.

Giants studs: Callan Ward (125) refused to give in under duress and topscored for the Giants. Heath Shaw (124) clunked eight marks, while Dylan Shiel (115) oozed class in and around the stoppages. Lachie Whitfield (109) might be one for SuperCoach 2017.

Giants duds: Jeremy Cameron (22) could only muster three kicks in trying conditions for key forwards. Steve Johnson (53) played only a bit-part role with 19 disposals. Toby Greene (57) undid any good work — three goals — by giving away EIGHT free kicks!

DOCKERS 126 def BOMBERS 47

Dockers studs: Lachie Neale (138) did as he pleased finishing with 42 disposals in the runaway victory at Subiaco. David Mundy (124) was next best, while Michael Barlow (104) won plenty of his own ball while stopping Bombers magnet David Zaharakis. Sam Collins (100) WILL be the most popular selection this week after his breakout effort in just his second AFL game.

Dockers duds: Nothing to see here as all of the SuperCoach relevant Dockers did their jobs.

Bombers studs: Few and far between but Zach Merrett (128) starred with 37 disposals for the Bombers, while Matthew Leuenberger was the only other Bomber that tonned up.

Bombers duds: Zaharakis (20) had a night he’d rather forget — statless in the first quarter and finished with 11 for the game — as did Mitch Brown (29). The latter now certain to make way at the SuperCoach selection table.

SUNS 41 def by SWANS 79

Suns studs: Gary Ablett (121) looks to have found his groove after back-to-back tons following a week off with concussion. The Little Champ had his shoulder looked at late in the last quarter, fingers crossed it’s nothing but a knock. Dion Prestia (114) collected 39 disposals.

Suns duds: What to make of Aaron Hall?! Just the 52 points — to be fair, conditions hardly suited his outside game — and serious questions need to be asked of the Suns speedster. Jack Martin (50) and Nick Malceski (54) — both reliant on clean disposals — struggled to make inroads as the Swans dominated the stoppages.

Swans studs: Tom Mitchell (131) was born to play wet weather football and it showed with yet another blistering display from the father-son jet. Finished with 33 disposals including a goal. Best on ground. Gary Rohan (119) kicked two goals and laid seven tackles to boost his score, while Dan Hannebery finished with 36 disposals.

Swans duds: George Hewett (11) looks to have run his race after sitting out much of the game with concussion. Hit the trade button.

MAGPIES 58 def by POWER 125

Magpies studs: Skipper Scott Pendlebury (125) can hold his head high, defender Ben Reid (105) kept fighting against the tide and Jeremy Howe (102) overcame an injury scare to continue his purple patch.

Magpies duds: Don’t expect a big price rise from Matthew Goodyear (26), who is averaging 25 points after two games, and the points are suddenly drying up for Adam Oxley (42).

Power studs: Who would have thought Jarmen Impey (114) would be Port’s best player but the small defender was everywhere as he collected 22 disposals. Chad Wingard (110) booted three goals as he ripped the game from the Magpies early, while Aaron Young (102) ran around unaccounted for much of the afternoon and helped himself to four goals.

Power duds: Forward Dougal Howard (14) had a quiet day and was the only Port player with less than 10 disposals.

BULLDOGS 83 def EAGLES 75

Bulldogs studs: Stand-in skipper Marcus Bontempelli led from the front with a game-high 147 points. The Dogs had the top four scorers on the ground — Bont, Matthew Boyd (128), Lachie Hunter (124) and Tom Liberatore (120) who boosted his numbers with three goals including the sealer. Marcus Adams also got some crucial late touches to post a respectable 85.

Bulldogs duds: Bailey Williams was a late inclusion for Easton Wood but didn’t make the most of it, scoring just 35. Josh Dunkley (43) couldn’t back up his heroics of last week.

Eagles studs: Matt Priddis topscored for the visitors with 114 but he needs to improve his kick-to-handball ratio (6 kicks, 21 handballs) to get a better return for his owners. Shannon Hurn was the only other Eagles to crack the ton.

Eagles duds: The Dogs did it again, restricting the opposition ruckman to well under his season average. In this case it was Nic Naitanui who crashed to earth, although his 71 was better than Todd Goldstein and Max Gawn managed before him. Andrew Gaff (64), Elliot Yeo (56) and Liam Duggan (42) were all down and Josh Kennedy (49) couldn’t get it done at Etihad.

CROWS 133 d SAINTS 45

Crows studs: Seven goals, 20 kicks and 13 marks are always going to translate to big SuperCoach numbers and Josh Jenkins delivered with 170. Sam Jacobs wasn’t far behind with 150, his best score of the year. Rory Sloane and Matt Crouch did as they pleased as eight Crows scored in triple figures — including key defenders Daniel Talia and Jake Lever.

Crows duds: Amazingly, Eddie Betts was the lowest-scoring Adelaide player with 50 points. Eddie looked like he was about to send the Adelaide Oval hordes into a frenzy more than once but just didn’t have his kicking boots on.

Saints studs: Shane Savage (110) and Jack Steven (99) earned their pay cheque.

Saints duds: The nine lowest scores in the game belonged to St Kilda players including superstars Leigh Montagna (45) and Nick Riewoldt (45). At least Riewoldt has the excuse of being hurt in the opening minute. Jack Billings (56) is still hot and cold and Jack Newnes (61) couldn’t impact the game.
