AFL stars available for rock-bottom prices in KFC SuperCoach

Short on cash or just looking for a Hail Mary play to keep your season alive? We’ve dived deep into the KFC SuperCoach bargain bin and picked out the heavily-discounted stars and value picks to consider in Round 16.

Sometimes in KFC SuperCoach you need a Hail Mary play.

Experts tell us the point of all those trades is to “finish” your team - have 22 firing A-grade scorers on the field by this point of the season. But it’s easier said than done.

Now we are at sudden-death finals and many players will have to include a rookie or two - or more - in their final score. And we are out of time, trades or money to get the guns we want.

Do you need to make a big move to keep alive the dream of lifting the KFC SuperCoach premiership cup in your league, or make a late jump up the overall rankings?

How would you like to replace a cheapie who could score 40 with a guy who has scored 125 and 145 this season, at basically no cost? We’ve found a list of famous footy names who for one reason or another are available at insanely low prices. Most aren’t the sort of players you would pick at the start of the year or even mid-season, but with only three rounds to go, the risk could just pay off. At least you won’t die wondering.

TRADE GUIDE: ALL THE PREMIUM TARGETS FOR ROUND 16

Connor Rozee $294,900 FWD

Spare a thought for the 12,000 SuperCoaches who paid $470,000 for Rozee after Round 2 following scores of 125 and 145 in the opening rounds. His price peaked at $485k the next week but has been in freefall ever since, with an alarming seven scores of 63 or lower. But there have been some signs of life of late - an 83 against the Bulldogs - and he plays North Melbourne next round. Crazy to think it would cost just $2000 to swap Jake Aarts to him.

Josh Kennedy (WC) $380,100 FWD

There is a fine tradition of full-forwards beating up on a weaker opponent in the final home-and-away round and delivering a monster score on SuperCoach grand final day. Jeremy Cameron booted nine against the Suns last year (scoring 154 points) and Buddy has done it more than once. Could JJK, who is set to return in Round 16, be the man this year? The Eagles champ faces the Bulldogs and St Kilda before a final round match-up against the Kangaroos - when the Eagles might need some extra percentage to shore up a top-four spot.

Tom Lynch (Rich) $341,000 FWD

Lynch and teammate Jack Riewoldt are both around the $350k mark despite their obvious scoring potential - and the Tigers play Adelaide in the final round. But they have the bye this round so you can wait until Friday before making this move - or after the Tigers face the Cats in Round 16.

Jeremy Cameron (GWS) $328,000 FWD

Another key forward who could deliver when it matters. The Giants have a favourable draw - Adelaide, Melbourne, St Kilda - and they need to win to stay in the top eight. We know what Jezza did last year but his score of 44 against the Blues is a reminder of the inherent risk of these selections.

Kade Simpson (Carl) $342,600 DEF

The Blues’ KFC SuperCoach stalwart has turned back the clock - at least partially - in the past two rounds with 80-plus scores and comes at a ridiculously cheap price. He started the 2006 season valued at $246k and hasn’t been this cheap since Round 3 that year. Has barely missed a game since then so you don’t have to worry about an untimely injury.

Jake Stringer (Ess) $288,500 FWD

Stringer has never really been a KFC SuperCoach-relevant player and he’s not someone you should be thinking about this year especially after a score of just 13 in the Bombers’ loss to West Coast, gathering just four disposals and two clangers. But it’s remarkable someone this talented can be that cheap. I’d take Rozee instead.

Josh Kennedy (Syd) $435,000 MID

He’s no longer available for a ridiculous $417k but thanks to the injury-affected 18-point score in Round 16, the star midfielder is still available for $140k less than his starting price. And that’s despite scores of 84, 96 and 110 since returning in Round 13. Kennedy has posted a KFC SuperCoach ton is in his past three against the Blues and is still a perfect M8 option if you’re short on cash.

Joel Selwood (Geel) $375,000 MID

The Geelong skipper hasn’t played since Round 12 and is no certainty to return for Sunday’s clash with the Bombers. But $375k is a bargain for Selwood, even if he’s past his KFC SuperCoach prime. Scores of 151 and 143 earlier this season proves he can still go as big as any player on his day. Could that day be against the Swans in Round 18?

Chad Wingard (Haw) $361,500 FWD

It’s easy to forget Wingard averaged 112 points across the opening four rounds of the year, after recording three scores of 120 or more. But on the back of his varying role, the Hawks’ form and his own inconsistency, the 27-year-old has passed three figures just once since. Wingard had just eight disposals against the Bombers in Round 14 but tallied 16 disposals, two goals and 94 points against the Crows – his highest score since Round 9.

Rory Sloane (Adel) $429,800 MID

After missing five matches, Sloane struggled in his return to the Crows side in Round 12, finishing with just 15 disposals and 68 KFC SuperCoach points against the Bulldogs. But he’s been better in the past two matches with his 99-point score against the Hawks his highest since Round 1. And Sloane, whose price has been on a steady decline since the opening-round clash with the Swans, will be doing everything he can to get his side another win.

Joe Daniher (Ess) $280,800 FWD

The Essendon forward started the year at $270k, following a long battle with injury and the 103-point performance in his first senior game in more than 450 days highlights his value. But Daniher’s 33 points against the Eagles the following round and the chance he may be rested, make him a very risky selection.

AND LESSER NAMES ON THE WAY UP

Jack Scrimshaw (Haw) $398,200 DEF

If you jumped on the young Hawk after James Sicily’s injury in Round 12, well played. Scrimshaw has posted scores of 91, 93 and a career-high 118 points – on the back of 22 disposals, six rebound-50s, three intercept marks and four score involvements – in his past three matches. But the sub-$400k price means other KFC SuperCoaches haven’t missed out just yet.

Ben Ainsworth (GC) $355,800 FWD-MID

He’s shown glimpses but given the midfield talent available at the Suns, the highly-rated Ainsworth has spent most of his four-year career as a forward, who pinch hits in the middle. But his ball-winning ability and KFC SuperCoach scoring power was again on show against North Melbourne in Round 14. The 22-year-old, who averaged 118 KFC SuperCoach points as a junior, tallied 23 disposals, 11 marks, nine inside 50s and a game and career-high 142 points. He’s more one to keep in mind for next year but it could pay if you’re stuck for cash.
