A SuperCoach stud went missing while another key player was subbed off and there were plenty of injury scares.
Just another day of SuperCoach fun.
Brisbane claimed a thrilling two-point win over Sydney, while the Dockers trounced Melbourne by 50 points in Perth.
At Marvel Stadium, Carlton survived an almighty scare from North Melbourne to clinch a 19-point win.
Relive all the updates and our SuperCoach analysis below.
The three takeaways
NEALE M.I.A.
Lachie Neale entered Sunday’s clash against the Swans amid talk of a third Brownlow Medal, and with good reason. Scores of 149, 179 and 143 in three of his past four games - and a good record against Sydney - had many coaches confidently assigning the C to him this week.
But after a solid start he went completely missing, recording one handball in 45 minutes of game time as Luke Parker then Taylor Adams totally shut him out of the game. Eight disposals in the last quarter helped him avoid one of the lowest scores in his career and he finished on 78.
SERONG BOUNCES BACK
After a red-hot first half of the season, Serong has been below his best for seven weeks, posting just one score above 102 in that time. But he was back in a huge way on Sunday, running rings around an undermanned Demons midfield to collect 36 disposals, seven clearances and a goal.
After a round when many supposedly reliable captain choices fell flat, pencil him in early for next week’s Western Derby.
FISHER SUB DISASTER
The 19 per cent of SuperCoaches that own Zac Fisher are in a world of pain. He was likely starting on the field for nearly all of those sides, but scored just 38 points after he subbed out in the second half and largely unsighted for the majority of the clash against his former side.
Heading into the game he hadn’t scored below 71 since round 9 and had only dropped below triple figures twice. If this becomes a common theme or his place in the side is in jeopardy, it would spell very bad news given most coaches or on their final trades if they have any left at all. How good’s SuperCoach?
FT: BLUES-ROOS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS
Carlton proved to be too strong for the Roos late but it was from a convincing display from the Blues in the eventual 19-point victory.
Harry Sheezel had a day out to rack up 135 SuperCoach points.
North young gun Colby McKercher overcame an Alex Cincotta tage to lift to a very respectable 94 points.
Point of difference midfield option Patrick Cripps had a solid game with 114 points, while Sam Walsh appeared to pick up an injury late and finished with 94 points. Will be one to keep an eye on during the week.
A number of injury concerns - from a leg issue early to what appeared to be a chest injury late in the game - hampered Tom De Koning and he only scored 77 points.
Zac Fisher was a big talking point, subbed out with only 36 points to his name, although it was lifted to 38 by scaling. A disaster for those that had him on the field.
Charlie Curnow and Tristan Xerri both rewarded their owners with 106 and 109 points respectively.
7:15pm: DE KONING CONCERN - AGAIN
For the third separate occasion tonight an injury concern is hanging over Tom De Koning.
He’s entered the changerooms clutch at his chest. Given there’s not long left you’d imagine it’s unlikely we see hm on the field again tonight.
7:13pm: COSTLY MISS
Eddie Ford has sprayed a shot at goal from 15 metres out directly in front. With North needing more than three goals and just six minutes to play that could well have been their final chance to mount a comeback.
7:10pm: MCKAY EXTENDS LEAD
Debate is set to rage post-game over if McKay should have left on the field for around six minutes after a head knock left him looking very dazed, but he has passed his concussion test and returned to the field to kick another goal.
He has two majors - both kicked after the head knock - and Carlton now leads by 20. It would take a special North comeback from here but they’ve fought hard at Marvel.
Any reason why Harry McKay is still on the ground right now?
— Will Schofield (@WillSchofield) July 21, 2024
Hit his head, stayed downâ¦
7:03pm: WALSH CONCERN
Sam Walsh was seen hobbling on the interchange and looked like he couldn’t put much weight on his ankle. It would be bad news for Carlton and SuperCoaches alike if he plays no further part. He has 88 SuperCoach points.
6:50pm: FISHER SUBBED
Did you hear that? It was the sound of 34,000 SuperCoach hearts collectively shattering. Popular dual position player Zac Fisher has been subbed out of the game with just 36 points to his name.
It means Liam Shiels is injected into the game for North Melbourne.
3QT: BLUES-ROOS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS
Carlton finished the quarter in dominant form with a number of surging thrusts forward from centre bounces late in the term, and they lead by 17 points with a quarter to play after trailing at half-time.
George Hewett is the only play to crack the ton thus far, while Cripps (96 points) and Walsh (79) have also been strong for the Blues.
Forgotten SuperCoach midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke is also quietly putting together a strong game with 79 points.
Zac Fisher is a looming SuperCoach disaster having gone backwards from 37 to 36 points that quarter.
North ruck Tristan Xerri has been a standout with 91 points.
6:44pm: MCKAY INTO ROOMS
About six minutes after sustaining a head knock that left Harry McKay visibly dazed and shaken he has been pulled from the field and taken into the changerooms.
He did kick a very handy goal in that time, but now won’t be sighted until midway through the final term at best as he undergoes a head injury assessment.
6:40pm: COSTLY SLIP
Charlie Curnow won’t get many goals easier than that.
Colby McKercher tried to take on the Blues forward in the backline and lost his footing changing direction, allowing Curnow to bounce on him and earn a holding the ball free kick straight in front.
6:38pm: MCKAY CONCERN
Harry McKay picked up a head knock in a marking contest and looked very dazed and tentative returning to his feet. He hasn’t been pulled from the ground by the club doctor who was down in the rooms.
Tom De Koning is also back on the field for the Blues after there was further injury concern.
6:25pm: SUPERCOACH PAIN
Kick-ins have been few and far between, with Zac Fisher’s for North Melbourne marking just the fourth of the game and we’re in the third quarter! Carlton has kicked 11.3 while North has 10.1. Incredibly accurate display.
It’s bad news for Fisher owners and the like with kick-ins an easy way for players to boost their score.
Owies has three and the Blues have five on the trot!

6:24pm: DE KONING CONCERN
Tom De Koning has been on the interchange for several minutes and an injury cloud continues to hang over his head. He could be seen getting work done to his hamstrings by trainers on the sideline.
It comes after he limped down to the rooms in the first quarter but returned in the second term. He has 43 SuperCoach points.
6:19pm: BLUES HIT FRONT
Carlton hearts sunk when Brynn Teakle took just a minute to extend North Melbourne’s lead early in the third term, but Carlton has found their feet and kicked the past three goals of the game.
Charlie Curnow was the latest goal-scorer with his second major and has 44 SuperCoach points.
HT: BLUES-ROOS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS
North Melbourne big man Tristan Xerri is having a day out amid a round of ruck carnage with 68 points to half-time.
Blues midfielder Patrick Cripps has also had a very strong start with 70 points, while Sam Walsh has been quieter with 46 points.
Roos young gun Colby McKercher is tracking okay despite the dreaded Alex Cincotta tag to notch 46 points thus far.
The brakes were also hit on Harry Sheezel’s scoring in the second term, but owners won’t be complaining about a return of 59 inside the first half.
6:00pm: DOCKERS WIN BIG
That’s a second huge win by Fremantle over Melbourne for the season, with the 50 point margin following a 92-point walloping in Alice Springs.
Caleb Serong finished with 36 touches and a goal, while Luke Ryan’s past three SuperCoach scores are 99, 98 and 98 – at least he’s consistent.
The flogging started in the ruck, where the Dockers won the hitouts 47-9 and hitouts to advantage 16-0.
One big concern for SuperCoaches - Luke Jackson finished the game on the bench with ice on his knee.
5:45pm: COMBEN’S ON FIRE
Alistair Clarkson is reminding the AFL world of his coaching class, with the move to swing Charlie Comben forward this game proving to be a masterstroke.
The rising Roos star has three goals inside the first half.
5:40pm: WELCOME BACK JESSE
In his first game of 2024, Jesse Motlop has nabbed two majors in as many minutes.
The goals came were very timely for a Carlton outfit that had conceded five unanswered goals to start the second quarter.
North has had nine more inside 50s and also has a slight edge in the clearance battle.
5:35pm: ROOS FLYING
North Melbourne has kicked five unaswered goals and six of the past seven in the game. Wild scenes at Marvel Stadium.
Paul Curtis just kicked his second and Charlie Comben also slotted two goals to open the second term.
5:30pm: BLUES INJURY UPDATES
Tom De Koning has returned to the field and is looking okay after a big first quarter injury scare that saw him hobble down to the rooms.
Matt Kennedy was also under an injury cloud and went down to the rooms but has just returned to the field and is also looking okay.
5:29pm: FIRST GOAL
Robert Hansen Jr is North’s latest goal-scorer with his first major at AFL level. His teammates ran from all corners to ruffle some ahir and get around him.
North are looking the goods and have started this quarter in a flurry while Carlton are in all sorts of trouble. The Kangaroos lead by two goals early in the second quarter.
QT: BLUES-ROOS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS
Harry Sheezel has rewarded the mass of SuperCoaches that own him with a superb start that had him sitting on 45 points after the first quarter.
Colby McKercher and Zac Fisher have also been solid with 24 and 20 points respectively early in the clash.
Sam Walsh is tracking okay with 25 points.
5:25pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME
Luke Ryan powered to 81 points at the last change but Alex Pearce has been subbed off injured so he might have to take more responsibility as a key defender from here.
Caleb Serong is having a big bounce-back game after a few subdued weeks by his standards, but just 60 points for Clayton Oliver.
5:06pm: LUKE RYAN LIFTING
Luke Ryan decided he wanted to have a say in his 150th game and he has had a big third term - 7 disposals (6 kicks) at 86 per cent efficiency and three marks - to jump to 71 SuperCoach points late in the quarter.
Caleb Serong (92) and Andrew Brayshaw (91) have had a mountain of the footy while Steven May (93 points) is flying the flag for the Demons.
5:02pm: TDK INJURY CONCERN
Carlton holds a slender one-point lead over North and could be forced to go the game’s remainder without a ruckman.
Tom De Koning looked to be in pain on the interchange before he hobbled down to the changerooms accompanied by trainers.
It would be a horror situation for Carlton given back-up option Marc Pittonet was left out. Harry McKay and Patrick Cripps have been shouldering the ruck load in TDK’s absence.
It’s also bad news for the 7.4 per cent of SuperCoaches relying on TDK as their ruckman given he has just 16 points.
4:57pm: FAST START NULLIFIED
Plenty of Carlton supporters no doubt have their hearts in their mouths during this tense first quarter.
North is taking the game to the Blues early and kicked two of the first three goals. The Blues have responded however with the past two goals off the back of Ollie Hollands’ tidy finish in space to lead by seven.
4:47pm: SHEEZEL STRIKES
What a cracking start to this clash the Blues and North. The pressure has been high, but the Roos have the first goal off the back of some brilliant positioning from Harry Sheezel who crumbed superbly and followed it up with a tidy finish off the outside of his boot.
4:40pm: BLUES-ROOS UNDERWAY
The ball has been bounced to begin the final match of the round under the roof at Marvel Stadium, with Carlton out to avoid a third-straight loss against North Melbourne.
4:30pm: HALFTIME
Melbourne kicks the final two goals of the half but it’s all Freo so far.
Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong each have 21 disposals and Hayden Young’s 14 disposals include eight inside-50s. For comparison, Melbourne has 13 inside-50s for the match.
That means not much action down back for Luke Ryan (38 points).
4:25pm: FINAL TEAMS FOR BLUES v ROOS
There are no late changes for the final game of the round.
David Cuningham will start as Carlton’s sub, while Liam Shiels is the Kangaroos’ sub.
Colby McKercher owners can breathe a sigh of relief after talk he was under an injury cloud.
4:05pm: JACKSON GETS REVENGE
It’s not just in the ruck where Fremantle’s talls are getting on top of Melbourne, Freo’s tall forwards are markign everything.
Josh Treacy has eight marks already plus two goals while former Demon Luke Jackson plucks a big contested grab then threads a banana goal from the boundary.
He marks again a minute later but his set shot from 50m just sails wide.
Jackson has 47 SuperCoach points while Treacy leads the game with 62.
Freo is leading the clearances for the game 19-1 – that’s nuts..
Fair to say Luke Jackson was pretty happy with his effort from the boundary!#AFLFreoDeespic.twitter.com/mwsebFSotZ
— AFL (@AFL) July 21, 2024
3:55pm: QUARTER-TIME IN PERTH
Could Caleb Serong be back? Here’s hoping on behalf of everyone who coughed up $650k for the young gun. He has 32 SuperCoach points from 11 touches at quarter-time ass the Dockers dominate the Dees. Andrew Brayshaw leads all-comers with 40 points, while Sean Darcy could be set for a day out with 36 points at the first break as he does whatever he pleases in the ruck. Trent Rivers has 35 points for those who backed him in while Anthony Moniz-Wakefield has 25.
3:48pm: LIONS WIN A CLASSIC
Brisbane has claimed a two-point win in one of the games of the season.
Callum Ah Chee kicked the go-ahead goal, and should have sealed it moments later but fluffed his chance running into an open goal, setting up a crazy final few minutes that included a Lachie Neale snap that bounced on the goal line and rebounded back into play.
Courageous effort by an injury-ravaged Swans. Huge win for Brisbane.
Eight disposals in the final term pushed Neale to 76 SuperCoach points, edging out Brodie Grundy (73) and Isaac Heeney (72).
3:36pm: LIONS IN FRONT
The Gabba is rocking to ‘Take Me Home, Country Road’, after Charlie Cameron’s first goal of the game.
Lachie Neale played a big role in the build-up, forcing a stoppage with a tackle then winning the clearance and sending the Lions forward.
3:33pm: DEMONS CAUGHT SHORT
Melbourne’s decision to come in without a recognised ruckman looks set to backfire early doors in the west.Sean Darcy has just taken a big pack mark and missed the shot.
The Dockers have nine hitouts (six to advantage) while Melbourne has just the one hitout for the game with Harrison Petty and Jacob van Rooyen struggling to have an impact in the ruck.
3:26pm: HUGHGE McCLUGGAGE!
We have a game after two goals in 30 seconds from Hugh McCluggage, the second this classic straight from the centre bounce.

3:23pm: GAME ON IN PERTH
Sam Sturt has the opening goal for the Dockers against the Demons.
3:15pm: THREE QUARTER-TIME
The Swans are hanging on for what would be an incredible win given their injury struggles.
Not many popular SuperCoach names on the list below, with notable absentees including Isaac Heeney (64 points), Brodie Grundy (59 points) and Lachie Neale who incredibly has just 32 points – just two points above where he was sitting at quarter-time.
3:02pm: LIONS SUB IS ON
A cheer from the crowd as Bruce Reville enters the action for the first time today.
First-gamer Henry Smith is out with 21 SuperCoach points to his name.
2:55pm: WHERE IS LACHIE NEALE?
In one of the most remarkable stats of the season, Lachie Neale has had one handball in the last 45 minutes of game time – including zero touches since halftime.
Taylor Adams has the job now on the dual Brownlow medallist and John Longmire would be thrilled.
Neale anchored on just 30 SuperCoach points for the game. This is a player with a three-round average of 145!
2:38pm: SWANS THREE MEN DOWN
John Longmire confirms all of Dane Rampe, Tom Papley and Will Hayward will all take no further part in the game.
That’s huge on a hot day at the Gabba, with the Lions gunning for a top-four spot if they can overcome a seven-point halftime defecit.
2:30pm: FINAL TEAMS FOR FREO v DEMONS
There are no late changes for the second Sunday game.
The starting subs are Jaimes Aish (Fremantle) and Jack Billings (Melbourne).
2:23pm: HALFTIME
If we have learned one thing this year, it’s don’t count out the Swans.
Errol Gulden led the charge in the second term with five disposals and a trademark running goall and Brodie Grundy lifted to reach 40 SuperCoach points at halftime.
But Dayne Zorko and Lachie Neale were almost unsighted – Zorko had four kicks (two effective) for the term, while Neale had just one handball to sit on 31 points at halftime. The most surprising aspect of that stat is he doesn’t appear to be receiving a tag.
2:06pm: SWANS’ EARLY SUB
A major injury blow for Sydney with Dane Rampe subbed out injured midway through the second quarter. No word yet on the nature of his injury.
Corey Warner is into the game.
And the Swans could be a man down on the bench with Tom Papley getting helped off by trainers just minutes after the sub was activated.
2:00pm: HERE COMES SYDNEY
The Swans have taken over in the early stages of the second term and the margin is suddenly four points.
Errol Gulden is having an impact but some other big SuperCoach names are struggling, especially Brodie Grundy.
He has 26 points and just gave away a free kick for punching a boundary throw-in straight back over the line.
1:44pm: QUARTER-TIME
A dominant quarter from the Lions, including three goals to Joe Daniher.
Dayne Zorko bounced up from his early knock to gather a game-high 10 disposals while Cam Rayner has seven and a goal.
Lachie Neale is copping some close attention from Luke Park and has been held to five touches so far, but they include two centre clearances so he’s getting maximum value from his touches in terms of SuperCoach points. His only ineffective disposal was a shot for goal that bounced into the behind post.
1:35pm: TUNNEL TACKLE OK?
The umpire called play on after Eric Hipwood took out Nick Blakey with this bump, and the end result was a Cam Rayner goal.
Jonathan Brown was perplexed on Fox Footy – “We’ve spent all week talking about dangerous tackles and that’s as dangerous as you’ll get” – and fans were left scratching their heads.
The tunnel by Hipwood on Blakey is way more dangerous than what anyone has been reported for over the last month.#AFLLionsSwans
— Peter Duffy (@peteduffy39) July 21, 2024
How the hell was that tunnelling free missed. Hipwood bumped Blakey while in the air on purpose. Then lions end up kicking a goal. Insane decision #AFLLionsSwans
— JT (@JTowne7) July 21, 2024
How serious are the AFL about protecting the head when Blakey doesnât get a free for this? Play on, Lions goal ðDangerous play by Hipwood which is a send off in rugby every time. pic.twitter.com/VZYl4nFUGq

1:20pm: JOE SMOKING EARLY
Joe Daniher has the first two goals of the game as the Lions get off to a great start at home.
1:14pm: ZORKO HURT
A big storyline for SuperCoaches could be developing early with Dayne Zorko limping after his first contest of the day.
Joel Amartey crashed into him as he flew for a mark at half-forward. So far Zorko is staying out there – and he looked a lot better as he played on from the first kick-in of the game.
Zorko ankle but staying on at this stage. Looks sore #supercoach
— Supercoach (YEAH NA CHEERS) (@NaCheers) July 21, 2024
1:12pm: WE’RE AWAY
Superstar midfielders from both teams are going head-to-head at the opening bounce – Lachie Neale v Chad Warner, Isaac Heeney v Hugh McCluggage, Errol Gulden v Josh Dunkley.
After the opening bounce Luke Parker made a beeline for Neale, so we’ll keep an eye on that one.
12:15: FINAL TEAMS
There are no late changes for the first Sunday game.
The starting subs are Bruce Reville (Brisbane) and Corey Warner (Sydney).
