Melbourne superstar Max Gawn has led his side to yet another Anzac Eve victory over Richmond. See the takeaways and relive the updates here.

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 7

Max Gawn has produced a stirring SuperCoach performance on Anzac Eve to guide Melbourne to its fifth win of 2024.

The Demons trailed by one point at the main break but ran away through a 10 goal to two second half.

Gawn collected a superb 160 SuperCoach points.

THE THREE SUPERCOACH TAKEAWAYS

GAWN GOES BIG!

The 5.6 per cent of SuperCoaches that have Max Gawn as their captain will be jumping for joy after his enormous outing.

Gawn was neck and neck with rival Toby Nankervis for the best part of the first half but, like Melbourne, was better for longer.

The 160 is a slight improvement on Gawn’s average against Richmond (125), which is his second-favourite opponent across the competition.

He took home the Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes award for best afield.

TURN IT UP!

Melbourne fourth-gamer Daniel Turner has certainly given SuperCoaches something to think about.

The once defender kicked three goals in his first stint forward to gather an impressive 100 SuperCoach points.

He had a break even of just 39 tonight and is owned by only 219 coaches.

Turner’s career scores read: 26, 43, 55 and 100.

MAURICE MAKES A STATEMENT

Maurice Rioli jnr might be worth thinking about for some SuperCoaches, particularly with Richmond’s growing injury list.

Rioli scored 91 tonight which challenges his career-best score of 92.

The small forward’s break even was just 49 and he only costs $266,300.

With Jacob Hopper joining Richmond’s extensive injury list, Rioli could be the beneficiary of Shai Bolton being called upon for some midfield minutes.

9:40: DEES STARTING TO CASH IN

Melbourne is starting to cash in on Richmond now, kicking three consecutive goals to skip out to a 32-point lead.

Substitute Bailey Laurie is the latest goal kicker, slotting his first goal in AFL.

Max Gawn has a whopping 143 SuperCoach points with nine minutes left in the game.

9:32: GOODWIN HURTS A QUARTER OF COACHES

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has broken the hearts of more than a quarter of SuperCoaches by subbing off rookie Caleb Windsor.

Windsor was having an excellent night with 68 points, 23 more than his break even.

9:30: STAR TIGER BREATHES LIFE INTO ANZAC EVE

Shai Bolton’s clever snap has injected some life into the Anzac Eve blockbuster at the MCG.

The Tigers now trail by only 16 points with 17 minutes remaining.

Bolton has had a relatively quiet night but remains as dangerous as ever this quarter.

Max Gawn still leads all comers in SuperCoach with 125.

9:20: 3QT — NANK BLUNDER HURTS TIGERS

Toby Nankervis has turned the ball over in the final seconds of the third quarter to allow Caleb Windsor to extend Melbourne’s lead.

Nankervis looked to switch the ball across goal and it was cut off by rookie Windsor.

He kicked the goal on the siren to put the Dees up by 23 points.

It happened just moments after the ball appeared to be heading out of bounds before hitting the boundary umpire’s knee and remaining in the field of play.

Nankervis is still one of the better SuperCoach performers for the night but his opponent Max Gawn is having a huge game with 114 to the final change.

9:15: HOPPER OFF

The blows keep coming for Richmond.

Star midfielder Jacob Hopper has been subbed out of tonight’s match with a left hamstring injury.

He immediately grabbed it during the third quarter but tried to push through, staying on the ground.

Hopper later came off and was subbed out for Kamdyn McIntosh.

9:02: DANIEL TURNS IT ON

Melbourne defender-turn-forward Daniel Turner has kicked his third goal of the night to propel his side ahead by 17 points.

Turner had not kicked a goal before tonight but has three with a quarter and a half remaining.

Only 219 SuperCoaches have Turner, who has a break even of just 39.

He currently has 67 points.

8:55: GAWN CLOSES IN ON TON

Max Gawn is closing in on a SuperCoach century after a pack mark and goal early in the third term.

Gawn has rushed to 91 SuperCoach points.

8:42: MAGICAL MAURICE

Richmond’s Maurice Rioli has produced a bit of a SuperCoach breakout half.

The forward has 65 points to the main break, which is already 16 more than his break even of 49.

By SuperCoach, he is the second best Tiger on the ground.

8:30: HT — TIGERS LEAD, RUCKMEN RUN RIOT

Ruckmen Max Gawn and Toby Nankervis are filling their boots ... on each other!

Gawn has 74 while his rival skipper has 65.

The Tigers lead by just a solitary point in a relatively scrappy contest.

8:21: TURNER TIME

Melbourne’s Daniel Turner has kicked his first goal in the big time.

Typically played as a defender, Turner has been playing inside 50 tonight and has been lively with two shots on goal.

The 219 SuperCoaches that have him and his break even of 39 will be happy with his 27 so far.

8:18: THAT’S ... A POINT

Tom McDonald has provided a great clip for the 2024 blooper reel.

After taking a strong intercept mark, McDonald backed through the points and kicked through the defensive goals.

It was correctly called a point, which levelled the scores.

8:14: TIGERS NEED MORE OUT OF STAR

Richmond has held its own against Melbourne but if the Tigers are to win, they’ll need more out of livewire Shai Bolton.

The excitement machine has had just four disposals for the return of 15 SuperCoach points halfway through the second term.

Melbourne would say the same about Jack Viney, who has had just five disposals.

Viney was awarded the best afield medal last year.

8:10: GAWN V NAKNERVIS

It’s not quite Nat Fyfe v Patrick Dangerfield at Adelaide Oval, but Max Gawn and Toby Nankervis are immersed in some sort of SuperCoach battle.

Going head to head, the two ruckmen — and captains — are on their way to monster nights.

Gawn has 72 points while Nankervis has the next best on the ground with 55.

8:00: IS ANOTHER PICKETT IN TROUBLE?

By Glenn McFarlane

Richmond’s Marlion Pickett could come under MRO scrutiny after an off-the-ball swipe that left Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver on the deck late in the first quarter of the Anzac Eve clash before a packed MCG crowd.

Pickett and Oliver were locked in an animated discussion at centre half forward of the city end when the Tiger threw his hand out at the Demon.Oliver went down immediately in some pain before regaining his feet as his teammate Jack Viney came in to immediately remonstrate with Pickett.

It came after a first term where the Tigers took the game right up to the Demons, having 17 inside 50s to 11 but just couldn’t quite turn that early run and gun energy into scoreboard impact.

7:54: QT — MAY LEADS ALL COMERS

Melbourne defender Steven May is set for a monster night if Richmond’s forward entries continue in their current trajectory.

May has already taken five marks and had nine disposals to the first change.

Max Gawn, meanwhile, is in a shootout with Toby Nankervis, who has rivalved the Melbourne skipper’s first quarter.

7:51: FINALLY!

Richmond has finally got some reward for its dominance.

Mykelti Lefau’s neat sidestep and banana from close range allowed the Tigers to hit the scoreboard for the first time despite having so much of the play on their own terms.

Steven May leads all comers in SuperCoach with 39 points.

7:43: NO REWARD FOR TIGERS

Richmond has had no reward for its inside 50 dominance, having registered just two minor scores from 12 inside 50 entries.

Much to Steven May’s delight, Richmond has fallen into the trap of bombing long without its usual tall timber.

May already has four marks for the return of 33 SuperCoach points.

7:39: ARM WRESTLE AT THE ‘G

The Dees and Tigers are entrenched in an arm wrestle of a first term, with just one major scored halfway through the first term.

Dustin Martin had a chance for the Tigers and Daniel Turner a chance for the Dees but neither took their chances.

Trent Rivers and Liam Baker lead on the SuperCoach scoreboard with 25 points apiece.

7:30: DEE-LIGHTFUL START

Melbourne has made a fast start to its Anzac Eve clash against Richmond, booting the first goal inside the first minute.

Dee Jacob van Rooyen won a free kick and finished truly.

Clayton Oliver looks ominous early while Kysaiah Pickett has made a strong start in his return from suspension.

6:35: TIGERS TO MIX IT UP FORWARD

Richmond coach Adem Yze says his side will be unpredictable with its forward structure tonight, as it adapts to the injuries to its front half.

Speaking on Fox Footy pre-game, Yze said Toby Nankervis and Sam Naismith would play roles forward.

“We’ve got to mix and match a bit tonight,” Yze said

6:32: FINAL TEAMS

Richmond and Melbourne have locked in their respective substitutes for the Anzac Day Eve clash.

The Tigers have picked Kamdyn McIntosh as their sub while the Demons have picked Bailey Laurie.

Neither side has had a late change.
