AFL 2024: Recap all the SuperCoach news and scores for Collingwood vs. Western Bulldogs

The Western Bulldogs won a thriller against Collingwood but now face a nervous wait as two players face possible suspensions for incidents during the contest. Recap the game as it happened and all the key SuperCoach takeaways.

SuperCoach AFL Buy, Hold, Sell Round 12

The Western Bulldogs kept their top-eight chances alive with a stirring 18-point win over Collingwood at Marvel Stadium.

Down an interchange for the second straight week in a row the Bulldogs kicked five goals to zero in the final term to secure its third win out of their past four matches.

Here are three takeaways from the match and a recap of the contest is below.

WHO GETS THE THREE?

Either Marcus Bontempelli or Nick Daicos will be stiff on Brownlow Medal night with one of them missing out on three votes. For the first half you would have given the nod to Daicos who had 98 SuperCoach points and 18 disposals. In the second half it was all Bontempelli who had 14 disposals in the final term and kicked a valuable goal to help his side win. One will be player of the match, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the umpires side with the Bulldogs captain as he inspired the Dogs late. Both ended up being number one and two in SuperCoach with 186 and 156 points respectively.

SANDERS AN OPTION?

Since his return to the team, Ryley Sanders has impressed in SuperCoach and had his second-best game of the season. He scored 98 points off the back of 15 disposals and 11 tackles (the second-most in the game). With the Bulldogs expected to miss at least two players next week, with injury, and maybe more with suspensions, you’d expect Sanders to keep his spot, which would provide a tempting player to have in your team. He’s averaged more than 80 points in the past two weeks.

DO YOU TAKE A RISK ON LOBB?

Rory Lobb scored 72 points in the contest in his first game in weeks, kicking a goal and having 12 disposals and two marks. He’s had two scores past 60 in four of his matches this year and with Sam Darcy expected to be suspended following his hit on Brayden Maynard and Aaron Naughton still out for a period of time, Lobb may be in the side for a few weeks. He might be worth a trade if you are looking for someone between $300,000 and $400,000 in your forward line.

10:27pm: Bulldogs win

The Western Bulldogs secure a valuable win for their season beating Collingwood by 18 points. Score: 15.10. (100) to 12.10. (82).

10:24pm: Darcy seals win

Sam Darcy take a bow. The tall forward kicks a snap shot near the boundary line, 30 metres out, which bounces over the goal line to secure the win for the Western Bulldogs. The forward, after a tough start to the game, has been impressive, kicking three goals.

10:23pm: Dogs holding on

Western Bulldogs still lead by 12 points with two minutes to go.

10:17pm: Dogs extend margin

The sub delivers for the Bulldogs. Lachlan McNeil is able to get away from his opponent in the attacking 50, gets the ball and runs into an open goal. Dogs lead by 12 points with just over five minutes to go. Bontempelli has had 11 disposals this quarter. He’s been huge for the Dogs.

10:12pm Bont stands up for Dogs

Marcus Bontempelli kicks a massive goal in the context of the contest. The Bulldogs lead by seven points with 8:40 to go. He has had nine disposals in the final term, in a big quarter for the captain.

10:09pm: Sub made for Collingwood

Wil Parker is on for the Pies and John Noble has been taken out of the game. It’s purely a tactical decision. There is no injury for Noble.

10:08pm: Dogs on top

It’s been all the Bulldogs this term with repeated entries inside their 50. Rylee West kicks a goal and the Dogs lead by one point. The momentum is all with them at the moment. Can the Daicos brothers lift the team back into the contest?

10:02pm: Dogs get the first

Margin is back to five points after Rory Lobb kicks the first goal of the final term. The Bulldogs have started well in the final term.

9:56pm: Final term underway

This is a massive final term for the Bulldogs. A loss would put them three games behind Collingwood, who are eighth right now, and make it tough to come back to play finals this year. Collingwood, who love close games, have won 20 out of their past 26 matches in games decided by 10 points of less. Two of those games were draws. It’s a decent record if this gets close.

9:54pm: SuperCoach analysis

Nick Daicos will need a large final term to get close to 200 points after only adding 34 in the third term. He is now on 132 points but still very handy for the SuperCoaches who have him. Tim English had a big term with 41 points to move to second with 111 points. He leads the Bulldogs players. Others to crack 100 include Bailey Dale and Marcus Bontempelli. There could be another few players who join them on 100 points in the game.

9:47pm: Pies hold on to lead at final break

Two late goals to Collingwood gives them a handy 12-point lead at three-quarter-time. We’re set for another close Friday night contest involving the Pies. Score: 12.9. (81) to 10.9. (69).

9:37pm: Dogs show fight

Just when you think the Bulldogs might be done, they respond. Two goals in four minutes has the margin back to two points. Jamarra Ugle-Hagan kicks his second goal for the game with a booming kick from 45 metres out which just beats the Collingwood defence on the line.

9:33pm: Goal drought as Collingwood takes control of contest

There were 16 goals in the first half and just two in the first half of the third term. Collingwood leads by 14 points. The next 10 minutes will be crucial for the match.

9:24pm: Pies extend lead

Lachlan Schultz kicks his second for the night and the Pies lead by eight points. There has also been 10 holding the ball decisions made tonight after a tightening of the rules. Collingwood has had eight frees for them and the Bulldogs has had the other two.

9:10pm: Daicos on track for 200

No player this year has scored 200 points with Luke Ryan getting close for Fremantle a couple of weeks ago with 197. He’s on 98 at half time and according to Fox Footy he had the highest rating first half of any player this season. It’s also been a good half for Adam Treloar with 86 points with Bailey Dale on 78. Jack Macrae is on track for one of his best games this season with 75.

9:01pm: Bulldogs down an interchange

Lachlan Vandermeer is out for the rest of the game with a hamstring injury. With Harmes also out, and substituted, the Bulldogs are now down to three on the bench. After doing the same last week against Sydney, the team will have to dig deep to get a result against the Pies.

9:00pm: Half time stats

Disposals: Collingwood – N. Daicos 18, J. Crisp 14, J. Noble 12, S. Sidebottom 11, J. Daicos 10. Western Bulldogs – B. Dale 20, A. Treloar 19, M. Bontempelli 17, H. Gallagher 10.

Goals: Collingwood – J. Daicos 2, N. Daicos 2, J. Crisp, L. Schultz, O. Markov, B. Maynard. Western Bulldogs – S. Darcy 2, J. Macrae 2, A. Treloar, M. Bontempelli, J. Ugle-Hagan, L. Vandermeer.

8:55pm: Pies hold on at main break

A late Sam Darcy goal reduces the margin to three at the main break. Collingwood takes a deserved lead into half time but the Bulldogs responded well in the second term, kicking five goals to three and having 20 inside 50s to six. Score: 8.8. (56) to 8.5. (53).

8:50pm Daicos again!

Make that four goals for the Daicos brothers this half. Nick Daicos gets the ball outside 50 and just strolls towards the 50 and kicks a brilliant goal. Pies lead by 11 points with two minutes to go.

8:45pm: Pies bounce back

Collingwood takes the lead five minutes before half time. Josh Daicos kicks his second goals of the night and the Pies lead by five. The Daicos brothers have combined for three out of the seven goals tonight.

8:33pm: Dogs take the lead

Now it is four goals in a row as Jamarra Ugle-Hagan kicks his first goal for the night and the team leads by six. The Bulldogs are starting to take control of the contest around the ground. Collingwood leads centre clearances 10-3 but the Dogs lead stoppage clearances 12-4 and has had more disposals. The momentum is swinging.

8:29pm: Bulldogs coming back

Western Bulldogs have kicked the first two goals of the term and the margin is down to six points. Sam Darcy kicked the first, much to the angst of Collingwood fans, before Adam Treloar adds the second. The Dogs have kicked four of the past five goals. Game on again.

8:21pm: First quarter wrap

Bailey Dale has been let off the leash by the Pies and it showed with 12 disposals and 57 SuperCoach points. Nick Daicos keeps on showing why he is regarded as the best player in the game. He got 50 SuperCoach points and had six centre clearances in the first term. Astonishing against a quality midfield. Others to score well included Jack Crisp (48), Jack Macrae (44), off the back of two goals, and Marcus Bontempelli (34).

8:13pm: Quarter time update

Collingwood leads at quarter time but the margin should be bigger than 17 points. The Pies dominated the term but were wasteful in front of goal, kicking five goals and seven behinds. Will it come back to bite them? The Bulldogs were able to keep it close, kicking vital goals during the term, to stay in the hunt in what has been a tough quarter for the side. Score: 5.7. (37) to 3.2. (20).

8:06pm: Bulldogs duo in trouble

Reporting from Scott Gullan

A LATE hit by young Bulldog star Sam Darcy on Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard is set to come under match review panel scrutiny.

Darcy was clearly late to the contest and cannoned into the back of Maynard as he took the mark early in the opening quarter.

The hit sparked a melee as a dozen Collingwood players rushed to remonstrate with the Dogs forward.

Maynard seemed momentarily dazed before getting up and kicking a goal after receiving a 50m penalty.

He then left the ground and was immediately taken into the rooms of Marvel Stadium for a concussion test.

It was a horror couple of minutes for Darcy as he then gave away another 50m penalty for running through the mark but fortunately Jack Crisp missed the resultant shot at goal.

Despite their long injury list it was all Collingwood early in the game, kicking the opening three goals inside six minutes.

Adding to the Bulldogs early problems was midfielder James Harmes limping off the ground at the 11-minute mark with a hamstring injury. He was immediately subbed out with Lachlan McNeil activated.

There would be further trouble for the Bulldogs not long after with Taylor Duryea put on report for striking Nick Daicos in the forward 50.

The contact, which wasn’t shown on television, resulted in a free kick and a goal for him and the Pies.

The sub has already been activated for the Western Bulldogs with James Harmes out with a hamstring injury. Lachlan McNeil is coming on to replace him. It’s a big blow for the Dogs who are already under plenty of pressure after the red-hot start from Collingwood. The Pies lead by 22 points.

7:50pm: 50m penalties are running hot

The Bulldogs get their first goal of the match after getting two 50m penalties from the Pies. The umpires are cracking down on the 50m penalty tonight. In just five minutes of action there has already been four 50m penalties.

7:47pm: Collingwood kicks away

The Pies have the first three goals of the contest and leads by 19 points. Meanwhile, Brayden Maynard has gone off for a concussion test after Sam Darcy clobbered him after he took a mark. Darcy might be in trouble for the contact, which was high, to the head, and after the contest.

7:45pm: Pies lead early

Josh Daicos kicks a brilliant running goal from 45 metres out and Collingwood leads by seven early. Some interesting match-ups early with Harvey Gallagher on Nick Daicos and Riley Garcia on Josh Daicos. Massive responsibilities for two players who have less than 40 games between them.

7:40pm: Game is underway

Western Bulldogs will be looking to improve on their record at Marvel Stadium. The team has lost three of their past four and have won just one of last five against the Pies at the stadium. The Dogs do start as favourites with all the injuries to Collingwood.

7:20pm: Final teams for clash.

Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs have locked in their teams for tonight’s clash. Former cricketer, turned Pie, Wil Parker is the sub for Collingwood with Lachie McNeil the sub for the Bulldogs.

7:15pm: Welcome to the live blog

Finals teams to come in the next post for this anticipated contest.
