AFL 2024: Live updates, SuperCoach scores for Collingwood v Melbourne
Nick Daicos and Christian Petracca were both subbed out, Max Gawn was massive and we may have a rookie saviour for the rest of the byes. Here’s what we learned on King’s Birthday.

Melbourne has more soul-searching to do after another heavy defeat and a serious injury to Christian Petracca.
But Collingwood didn’t escape unscathed on King’s Birthday, with Nick Daicos subbed out of the game with an ankle concern.

DAICOS DISASTER
Before the game the SuperCoach world was split on whether to captain Max Gawn or Nick Daicos. Gawn was typically heroic in a losing cause, scoring 131 points. But Daicos had to wear a tight tag from Alex Neal-Bullen, who restricted him to just 22 points in the first half. He got going in the third, kicking a long goal from an intercept mark, but then disaster struck as he copped a kick in the lower leg. He started the final term but after the Pies put the result beyond doubt, he headed to the bench and was iced up as substitute Jack Bytel got a run. It was a nightmare result for the 34 per cent of coaches who made him captain – the highest percentage of the week (16 per cent went with Gawn) – and it could be even worse if he doesn’t get up for next week’s game against North Melbourne in an already difficult bye round.

ROOKIE SAVIOUR
Collingwood’s mid-season rookie factory keeps delivering. First Lachie Sullivan, then Joe Richards (for a couple of weeks), now Nathan Kreuger could save plenty of teams in the byes. Playing his first game for the year after scores of 8 and 9 in his two appearances last season, Kreuger played a key role up forward to finish with three goals and 76 points. He’s just $123,900 and a RUC/FWD, and is likely to appear in plenty of trades this week.
CLARRY DILEMMA
Clayton Oliver’s first kick sailed out on the full and it took him a while to get into the positives, but then he got going and finished with 28 disposals and 97 points. That’s not terrible, but not great. And next week Melbourne has the bye. Do you back in Clarry for the rest of the year, or is now the time to take a small profit from the past few weeks and try to trade him to a more reliable premium?
6PM: PIES WIN
Collingwood has beaten Melbourne by 38 points in the Big Freeze match, but the margin felt much, much bigger than that. Melbourne simply couldn’t get any purchase up forward. Jack Crisp has won the Neale Daniher trophy for best on ground.
On the SuperCoach front, Max Gawn has finished on 131 points ahead of Christian Salem and Clayton Oliver on 111 and 97 repsectively, while Jeremy Howe scored 119 and Nick Daicos, somehow, scraped his way to 64. Harvey Harrison kicked three for 64 points while Lachie Sullivan had 48.
Speaking after the final siren, Nick Daicos has told Cameron Ling on Channel 7 that his subbing out was precautionary and there’s no damage.
5.35PM: DAICOS SUBBED OUT
Well this is huge for SuperCoaches. Nick Daicos has been handed the red vest and subbed out of what will be a Pies win over Melbourne.
Daicos hobbled from the field at the final change and didn’t look too hampered, but with the margin at 40 points and no Demons aside from Kozzie Pickett Jacob van Rooyen firing a shot the Pies may have put their superstar on ice.
Jack Bytel comes into the game.
5.20PM: NICK DAICOS HOBBLES OFF
Thousands of SuperCoaches have their hearts in their mouth with Nick Daicos hobbling off after a knock to his lower leg late in the third quarter.
He was able to jog off gingerly under his own speed so there’s no serious damage, it seems, but with the wunderkind on just 57 entering the last change and the Pies a comfortable 34 points up, there’s concern the Pies might give their most important player a spell.
Max Gawn still leads all-comers, while Christian Salem is also making a charge for those who jumped on the point of difference.
The Demons have kept wasting opportunities going forward and have been unable to defend at ground level in their defensive 50.
5.05PM: PIES FENDING OFF DEES
Melbourne have made what may be a list-ditch effort at winning this game, with two shots on goal from Bailey Fritsch cut off before reaching the line, while Kozzie Pickett has converted a snap from 40 metres out.
Pickett also missed following a holding the ball tackle, making that 1.3 for the electic forward.
4.50PM: CHRISTIAN PETRACCA SUBBED OUT
He fought on valiantly for the second quarter, but Christian Petracca hasn’t re-emerged for the third quarter and has been subbed out for Jack Billings.
Petracca copped a nasty knee to the ribs in the first quarter.
Jacob van Rooyen gave Dees fans a glimmer of hope after slotting his third to open the third quarter, but Billy Frampton has immediately responded for the Pies thanks to a Beau McCreey kick it forward, and then Darcy Cameron kicked a Dom Sheed-esque set shot from the pocket to push the margin to a game-high 33 points.
4.25PM: PIES PILE ON THE PAIN
Will Hoskin-Elliott and Nathan Kreuger have piled on some pain for the Dees with two late goals to give Collingwood a 27-point lead at the main change.
Hoskin-Elliott outmarked Steven May 15 metres out with 10 seconds on the clock for the first half and went back and slotted it.
Melbourne has had long stints with the ball inside 50 but has been unable to make anything stick, whereas the Pies have been efficient inside 50.
Hoskin-Elliott and Kreuger have two apiece.
On the SuperCoach front, it’s a disaster for those with Nick Daicos, who’s on 22 points at the main change and receiving plenty of attention from Alex Neal-Bullen.
Max Gawn, however, is the leading scorer on the ground with 78 while Christian Petracca is battling on despite a heavy hit to the ribs.
Popular rookies Harvey Harrison and Lachie Sullivan are on 37 and 21 respectively.
4.15PM: GAWN FOR ALL MONEY
Max Gawn is rewarding those who backed him to bounce back from a tough game in Alice Springs last week.
The Melbourne captain has 16 hitouts, two tackles, four marks, five clearances and 11 touches along with nine contested possessions. He’s putting on a clinic in the ruck.
4.05PM: PETRACCA BACK ON
He barely crawled off the ground at quarter time, but Christian Petracca is back in the middle for the Demons, who’ve finally got two goals on the board thanks to young gun Jacob van Rooyen.

4PM: PETRACCA DOWN THE ROOMS IN PAIN
Christian Petracca is in serious trouble after a heavy collision at the end of the first quarter.
Petracca was kneed in the ribs in this incident and looked in a lot of pain.
He made his way off the ground under his own steam but has gone straight down into the rooms.

He hasn’t been subbed out at this point but has been Melbourne’s most damaging player in the midfield – possibly aside from Max Gawn.
He’s had eight touches, four marks and two takles to go with 33 SuperCoach points.
3.55PM: PIES IN CONTROL AT FIRST CHANGE
The MCG has come alive every time Brayden Maynard touches the ball, with Dees fans booing the Pies midfielder and Collingwood fans cheering him.
Steven May has also attracted boos from the big crowd.
Christian has gone down to the rooms after a heavy clash just before the quarter time siren where he copped a knee to the side.
On the SuperCoach front, it’s disaster for coaches who’ve captained Nick Daicos, with the Pies superstar on just eight points at the first change. Max Gawn is the highest for the Dees with 40, while Jeremy Howe leads all comers with 48.

3.45PM: GOAL OVERTURNED
Just as the Dees thought they were on the board through a Kysaiah Pickett crumb from the pocket, the ARC has taken it back. Replays seemed to show the ball clipping a Collingwood defender’s finger as it sped towards goal.
This isn’t a great game early doors.
3.40PM: DEES SPRAYING IT
Melbourne have arguably had the rub of the green the past five minutes in general play but can’t convert, with three behinds and two out on the fulls to the Pies’ two goals one behind.
Max Gawn has a strong early start with 19 points, but Nick Daicos has just seven points to his name with seven minutes left in the first.
3.28: DAICOS FEELING THE HEAT
Nick Daicos is having someone stand him at the centre bounce, but once the six-six-six rule is out of play Alex Neal-Bullen is wearing him like a glove.
3.32PM: WELCOME BACK WHE
Will Hoskin-Elliott has taken less than a minute to hit the scoreboard in his first game back from injury. Bobby Hill has shrugged off a Kozzie Pickett tackle on the wing and the Pies move forward in a flurry, with WHE on the end of proceedings.
After the restart, Clayton Oliver kicks it out on the full.
3.20PM: DEES WIN THE TOSS
We’re under way here at the MCG, in a massive day for both clubs – who are ninth and 10th on the ladder respectively – and for SuperCoaches, with a huge number of coaches captaining either Nick Daicos or Max Gawn.
Jack Viney has gone to Nick Daicos at the first centre bounce.
2.55PM: RIEWOLDT ROCKS, PINK RETURNS, RAFTER MAKES THE PLUNGE
Jack Riewoldt heads down the slide next, dressed as Brandon Flowers from The Killers in honour of his iconic(?) post-2017 Grand Final concert.
Mr Brightslide he says!
The Tigers legend actually makes a second plunge, looking for his wig that fell off on the way down.
AFLW and basketball superstar Erin Phillips is the next to make the plunge.
Phillips is dressed as Pink, one of Melbourne’s favourites.
Aussie tennis great Pat Rafter is the last of the sliders, dressed as Brian Johnson from AC/DC, coming out to Thunderstruck.

2.20PM: NIC NAT’S TRIBUTE TO BOB MARLEY, MADONNA ARRIVES
It’s a Jamaican theme from former Eagle Nic Naitanui, dressing up as Bob Marley before revealing his Cool Runnings inspired suit.
The former superstar ruckman even topped it off with a kiss for the lucky egg.
Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson is up second, headed down as the iconic Madonna.
