Collingwood’s premiership defence is back on track after a stunning six-point win over Carlton at the MCG.

A special goal to Nick Daicos two minutes from the end gave the Pies not only a valuable win against their enemy but a win that boosts their chances of getting back into the top four.

The game looked on track for a draw with scores level for three of the final five minutes.

But a young superstar had different ideas.

THREE SUPERCOACH TAKEAWAYS

Nick Daicos stars again

Almost three quarters of SuperCoach coaches have him and it might rise to 80 per cent this week. Nick Daicos is not only a star of the competition but a must in SuperCoach. He scored 152 points after his heroics, his highest score of the season. It looked like the Daicos of last year tonight where he kicked goals and racked up a large amount of disposals. Daicos kicked two goals and had 32 disposals in the win against Carlton. At $592,200, he’s a good price to pick up, if you have enough money.

Dream debut for Lachie

There might be a few SuperCoach coaches adding Lachie Sullivan to their team this week. Sullivan had a dream debut, kicking a goal with his first touch. He also had a great first game in SuperCoach, scoring 75 points despite missing a quarter. He had 10 disposals, five tackles and kicked a goal. With Beau McCreery set to miss next week, Sullivan looks likely to keep his spot, which could make him a great cheapie to pick up. He’s currently priced at $102,400.

Do you take a punt on Pittonet?

Marc Pittonet is starting to become an attractive option as a second ruck. He’s scored his second straight 100-point match with 118 and is now averaging more than 100 points in his last three matches. He’s likely to rise up the ranks to be in the top-10 of ruckman on average points after his performance against the Pies. With Patrick Cripps loving him in the team and his performances it looks likely he’ll stay in the team for a while. So at $408,500, do you add him, or leave him, and get more games under his belt to see if he continues his form? It’s a fascinating decision.

Daicos in the last two minutes not only kicked the winning goal but he won a vital free kick late to allow Collingwood to wind down the clock. The win puts Collingwood back into the top eight for the time being. Score: 12.13. (85) to 12.7. (79).

10:19pm: Daicos the hero?

Nick Daicos runs into space after a tap forward and snaps a goal to give Collingwood the lead with one minute to go. Is there anything this kid can’t do? What a superstar!

10:17pm: Two minute warning

Scores are still level with two minutes to go. Both sides have had the ball inside their 50.

10:15pm: Did someone say a draw?

Carlton gets a run on and have plenty of players free in the forward line. Matt Cottrell marks the ball 45 metres out and kicks a big goal for the Blues. Scores are level at 79 each.

10:13pm: Five minute warning

Collingwood leads by a goal with five minutes to go. This is going to go down to the wire. Score: Collingwood 11.13. (79) to Carlton 11.7. (73).

10:07pm: Pendlebury responds for Pies

Scott Pendlebury is all by himself in the Collingwood 50 and takes and uncontested mark. He kicks his first goal for the night and Collingwood leads by three points. We’re half way through the final term.

10:05pm Record breaking crowd

88,362 people are at the MCG tonight for the clash, the biggest ever home and away crowd for a Carlton v Collingwood clash. It broke the previous record, which was set in the final round of the season in 2022.

10:03pm: De Koning again

Tom De Koning kicks his second goal of the term and Carlton leads by three points.

9:59pm: Blues go coast-to-coast

First-gamer Lachie Sullivan misses a snap on goal for Collingwood and extends the margin to nine points. Carlton then rebounds and go from one end to the other and Tom De Koning is by himself near the goalsquare. He kicks his first and the margin is three points.

9:56pm: Pies extend lead

Collingwood leads 6-0 in inside 50s in the final term and this time the Pies are taking advantage of it. Will Hoskin-Elliott kicks his first goal of the night to extend the margin to seven points. He then misses another shot on goal, about a minute later, and makes the margin eight.

9:53pm: Sub made for Carlton

Matt Kennedy is on for Zac Williams. The defender looks to have an injury with ice immediately being put on his hamstring.

9:50pm: Collingwood gets back the lead

Bobby Hill snaps a magnificent goal 31 seconds into the final term to give the Pies the lead back. Collingwood leads by one point.

9:47pm: SuperCoach analysis

Nic Newman still leads in SuperCoach, becoming one of two players to crack 100 points in the third term. He has 108 points and has 22 disposals, seven marks and five tackles. Harry McKay has joined him on 100 points, with 102, after kicking four goals in the match. Others to impress are SuperCoach stars Sam Walsh and Nick Daicos. Both are on track for 120+ points and sit on 90 and 89 respectively at the final change. Finally, Patrick Lipinski, with 21 disposals and one goal, is having a good SuperCoach game with 98 points. Meanwhile, Patrick Cripps is having a tough night with just 53 in the game.

9:42pm: Blues lead at final change

Despite having the early dominance in their forward line during the quarter, Collingwood are kept goalless as Carlton takes the lead into the final term. The Blues kicked three goals to lead by five points. Harry McKay has four goals in the game. Score: 9.7. (61) to 8.8. (56).

9:35pm: Blues now lead

For all the dominance inside 50 this term for Collingwood, it amounted to nothing. Harry McKay kicks his fourth goal of the game and the Blues lead by four points.

9:30pm: Carlton holding on

Collingwood’s pressure has been intense this term, stifling Carlton’s chances to attack. But the Blues have the only two goals of the quarter. The Blues get the ball inside 50 and Owies gets the crumbs and kicks his second for the term. The margin is now two points – 55 to 53.

9:23pm: Pies keep the pressure on

The ball has been in and around the Collingwood forward 50 for the past five minutes but the Pies have been unable to kick a goal.

Margin is eight points.

9:17pm: Blues respond

Matthew Owies ends the Collingwood run with the first goal of the third term. But he gets a contentious free kick after Brayden Maynard tackled him to the ground. There’s no doubt the tackle was dangerous bit it looked like Owies deliberately tried to move forward and dive, while being tackled, to make it look bad. He gets the goal to reduce the margin to six.

Collingwood kicks the last five goals of the second quarter to turn a 19-point deficit to an 11-point lead. The Pies got their running game back and were able to get valuable marks in the forward half to create scoreboard pressure. We have a contest at the MCG. Score: Collingwood 8.4. (52) to 6.5. (41).

8:48pm: Pies running hot

Collingwood takes the lead for the first time since the first quarter, kicking their fourth goal in a row. Patrick Lipinski kicks his first goal for the night and Collingwood leads by five points with two minutes left of the quarter.

8:39pm: What an impact

No less than two minutes into his career, Lachie Sullivan gets the ball for the first time and kicks a brilliant goal. He joins the illustrious first kick, first goal club. What a moment for the 26-year-old and everyone gets around him to celebrate. Even his coach, Craig McRae, was happy with that one.

8:36pm: Concussion rules McCreery out

Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph says McCreery has been ruled out with concussion and is now set to miss the Pies next clash with West Coast. Meanwhile Harvey Harrison kicks Collingwood’s first goal of the second term to reduce the margin to 14. Score: Carlton 6.5. (41) to 4.3. (27).

8:33pm: McCreery out

The sub has been activated. Lachie Sullivan is on for his debut for Collingwood. Will get more of an update of McCreery’s condition when news comes through why he has been subbed.

8:31pm: McCreery off the field

Beau McCreery has gone down into the Collingwood rooms after suffering a nasty injury. He was sandwiched in a contest between two Blues players and got a knock to the face. He may be having a head injury assessment (HIA) test to see if he returns to the ground.

8:29pm: Carlton’s forwards maintain pressure

This is starting to become a big worry for Collingwood now. Curnow kicks his second for the night and Carlton leads by 19 points. The tall forwards for the Blues have kicked five goals now. Carlton also has six marks inside 50 compared to just one to Collingwood.

8:23pm: SuperCoach analysis

Harry McKay’s three goals put him on top with Nic Newman on 48 points after the first term. Newman had the second-most disposals in the first term with 10. Marc Pittonet ended up with third on 40 with opposition ruckman Darcy Cameron on 30. Sam Walsh and Nick Daicos had solid starts with 25 and 30 respectively and are on track for 100 each. It was another disappointing first term from Steele Sidebottom with the veteran only on 11 points after getting just four disposals.

8:15pm: Carlton leads at first break

A goal to Charlie Curnow late in the quarter gives Carlton a 14-point lead at the first change. It is the fifth time this season the Pies have conceded five or more goals in the first term this season. Carlton’s tall forwards are also dominating, kicking 26 of the 34 points in the term. Score: Carlton 5.4. (34) to Collingwood 3.2. (20).

8:08pm: McKay on fire

Harry McKay is causing plenty of headaches for Collingwood. He kicks two goals in the space of five minutes to give the Blue a nine-point lead. McKay has kicked three goals this term.

8:03pm: Newman leads the stats

Nic Newman has the most disposals and the most SuperCoach points in the match, heading into the final stages of the first term. He has eight disposals and 41 SuperCoach points. Carlton has dominated disposals with five of the top six leading disposal getters in the match from the Blues. Newman is joined by George Hewett (7), Blake Acres (6), Sam Walsh (6) and Adam Cerra (5) in the top six. Jack Crisp leads the Pies in disposals with six.

7:55pm: Pies bounce back

It’s a fast-flowing game with plenty of goals early. Jamie Elliott levels the scores with his first goal before Nick Daicos snaps a goal from 35 metres out from a stoppage to give Collingwood the lead back. Score: Collingwood – 3.0. (18) to Carlton – 2.0. (12).

7:53pm: Pittonet gets injury

Carlton ruckman Marc Pittonet gets a knock to the nose from his teammate Patrick Cripps and is off the field for treatment. He should be good to get back on the field.

7:50pm: Carlton leads early

Brayden Maynard kicks the first goal of the game with a booming kick outside of 50. He then concedes a 50 metre penalty with Harry McKay kicking his first to level the scores. Matthew Owies then kicks his first, from the next centre bounce, to give Carlton a six-point lead. It is already 6-1 in clearances to the Blues. Score: 2.0. (12) to 1.0. (6)

7:40pm: Game underway

The game is underway after a moving start to the night. Firstly, the teams, players and fans had a moment of silence as everyone took a stand against domestic violence. Then, Robbie Williams’ song Angels was blared out as the official song for the Peter Mac Cup. This is the 29th match between the two playing for the Cup, which helps raises funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. It’s a vital centre trying to not only find a cure for cancer but also helps treat those dealing with the horrible disease. The song was in tribute to those suffering from the disease or have been lost to it.

7:35pm: Focus of the game

There’s two big focuses for Collingwood early in this clash, get a good start and nullify Carlton’s midfield. The Pies have conceded an average of 38 points in the opening term of their past two clashes before bouncing back to win and draw against Port and Essendon respectively. An early start is crucial. Carlton has also been strong in the middle, winning clearances, which the Pies have struggled to do. If the Pies can match it, without Jordan De Goey and Tom Mitchell, it will go a long way to winning this game for them. Especially if they can get their run going from the back line and transition to the forward line to kick goals. That part of the game has helped Collingwood win recently and will be pivotal for tonight. For Carlton it is all about stretching Collingwood’s defenders with their tall forwards. When Charlie Curnow kicks four or more goals in a contest, Carlton wins three out of four matches. In recent times, the past three seasons, it has led to Carlton winning 88 per cent of matches. He is a key player in the match.

7:25pm: Last five between these two

The last few contests have been absolute classics and games which have attracted massive crowds. The past four, since crowd capacity returned to 100 per cent in 2022, have got more than 80,000. It could be 90,000+ fans tonight. Carlton won last year’s contest by 17 points, in their first win over the Pies since 2021. Before that it was all the Pies in the clash, winning the previous three, including the 2022 heartbreak for the Blues in the final round, which saw Collingwood win by one point to eliminate Carlton from the finals.

Last 5:

R20, 2023 – Carlton defeated Collingwood – 14.9. (93) to 10.16. (76)

R10, 2023 – Collingwood defeated Carlton – 13.7. (85) to 7.15. (57)

R23, 2022 – Collingwood defeated Carlton – 11.9. (75) to 10.14. (74)

R11, 2022 – Collingwood defeated Carlton – 11.13. (79) to 11.9. (75)

R18, 2021 – Carlton defeated Collingwood – 13.13. (91) to 9.8. (62)

7:10pm: Subs finalised for match

Lachie Sullivan ($102,400) may have to wait a while to make his debut for Collingwood after he was named as the sub for the Pies. For the 3.3 per cent SuperCoach coaches who have him, they hope he comes on sooner rather than later. Carlton has named Matthew Kennedy ($446,500) as the sub for the Blues.

7pm: Welcome to the blog

It promises to be a massive clash as bitter rivals, Carlton and Collingwood, face each other. Collingwood has had the edge in the head-to-head battles, winning eight of the past 10 but Carlton, importantly, won the last contest between the two by 17 points last year. Final teams will be in the next post.
