Bontempelli defied injury concerns to go nuclear, while Rankine had a mammoth first-half and taggers were in full swing. See the SuperCoach takeaways and relive all the action here

Taylor Adams gives away a costly 50m penalty for the Swans

Geelong has surged back into the top-eight with a convincing win over Essendon despite several controversial umpiring calls.

Earlier in the monster Super Saturday, Fremantle crushed Sydney’s after Logan McDonald missed a set shot after the siren.

Marcus Bontempelli also starred in the Bulldogs’ win over North despite concerns he may not have been fit enough to play.

See our SuperCoach takeaways and relive the analysis below.

The Three Takeaways

CAN’T STOP BONTComing into the round, Marcus Bontempelli was under an injury cloud with back spasms and needed 143 points for breakeven but you wouldn’t have even known that was the case as the ball magnet racked them up, finishing with 35 disposals and 157 SuperCoach points, making his breakeven look like a walk in the park.

It goes with his 162 points before the bye, and two weeks prior to that, he amassed 186 as the Dogs skipper showed no signs of being able to be stopped.

SUNS MIDFIELD DOMINANCE

Gold Coast’s midfield had arguably their best game of the season, and they saved it for when they needed it, coming up against Nick Daicos and co from the Magpies.

Noah Anderson finished with a game high 140 SuperCoach points while fellow midfielders Touk Miller and Sam Flanders finished with 121 and 114 SuperCoach points respectively.

Of course, the only player to break the three Suns midfielders was Nick Daicos who finished with 116 SuperCoach points, after a slow start. Daicos’ last quarter dominance almost handed the Pies another come-from-behind victory.

RANKINE IS MUST-HAVE

If you have money or trades in the bank and you don’t have Izak Rankine, move heaven and earth to get him into your SuperCoach side. The Crow was superb in the first-half against GWS with two goals and 21 disposals to shoot to 83 SuperCoach points by half-time. Despite a second-half Bedford tag that curbed his influence, Rankine still finished with 121 points.

In his last six games he hasn’t scored below 93 and has surpassed 120 on three occasions including a bumper 142.

With reliable premium forwards few and far between, and Rankine still in just over six per cent of teams, he could set your side apart in the run home.

FT: CATS-BOMBERS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Jye Caldwell and Jack Bowes led the way for each side respectively with 127 SuperCoach points apiece.

Tom Stewart was solid without setting the world on fire Geelong with 97 points playing a new-look midfield role.

Zach Merrett, Nic Martin and Jordan Ridley were all below their best, disappointing owners with scores of 78, 75 and 63 points respectively.

Cats Debutant Lawson Humphries - who supposedly requested 35 tickets ahead of the game and could well be on his way to becoming a cult hero - was superb with 91 points in his first outing. For those with final trades could in the bank he presents a superb downgrade option.

FT: CROWS-GIANTS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Toby Bedford’s tag cruelled Izak Rankine’s chances of a monster score as he was kept to just 38 points in the second half after a monster two-goal, 21-disposal first half.

Popular Giants Tom Green and Lachie Whitfield also impressed with 117 points each while Crows midfielder Rory Laird picked up 114 points. It marks a much-needed return to form for Tom Green after his monster 150-plus effort last week, rewarding coaches that stuck with him despite his price plummeting.

Jordan Dawson avoided a disaster score after escaping the dreaded Bedford tag in the second-half to finish with 94 points - with over 70 of those coming after half-time.

Billy Dowling has solid with 57 points, while Leek Aleer only had 36.

9:52PM: CONIGLIO CONCERN

GWS star Stephen Coniglio may have picked up an eye injury. He could be seen on the interchange getting his eye assessed by the club doctor.

It came as Jesse Hogan missed a narrow set shot and the Giants trail by 22 points with a touch under 20 minutes to play.

9:51PM: GAME OVER

Tyson Stengle slots his third goal of the evening and with that it’s game over at the MCG.

Geelong now leads Essendon by 39 points with just over 10 minutes to play.

After a very strong start Essendon has fallen away dramatically late in the game and the Cats have eight of the past nine goals.

9:43PM: CAMERON CONVERTS

Geelong’s lead has been extended to beyond five goals after a curling Jeremy Cameron finish.

The Cats have put the pedal to the metal in the second half and have six consecutive goals.

9:40PM: DONS SUB JONES

Harrison Jones has been subbed out for the third time this season after making a solid start early in Essendon’s clash with the Cats. It means Nik Cox enters the game for the final quarter. It was reported on Fox Footy that Jones’ calf was being iced so may be an injury concern.

9:37PM: THE DEBUTANT’S ON

Adelaide has activated its sub with debutant Zac Taylor coming into the game in place of Brayden Cook.

3QT: CATS-BOMBERS SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Jack Bowes has been the pick of the SuperCoach players at three-quarter-time with 104 points.

Jordan Ridley survived an injury scare for the Dons but has been below his best with just 52 points.

3QT: CROWS-GIANTS SUPERCOACH LEADERS

After a horror first-half, Jordan Dawson bounced back to jump to 58 points with a quarter to play.

It comes as the Toby Bedford tag shifted to Izak Rankine, who was kept to 21 third quarter points but still has 104 for the game.

Tom Green is on track for a handy score with 86 and Whitfield is tracking very well with 90 points.

Crows cheapie Billy Dowling has 34.

9:24PM: BOMBERS UNDER PRESSURE

Geelong has five of six goals in the third quarter in a remarkable turnaround against the Dons.

Tyson Stengle has led with two goals this term, while Dempsey also kicked his second to go with his 21 disposals.

9:18PM: GIANTS ACTIVATE SUB

Max Gruzewski has been subbed out by GWS with Toby McMullin coming on in his absence.

McMullin had immediate impact with his first touch setting up Callan Ward’s goal for the Giants’ second of the half.

GWS now trails Adelaide by 31.

9:10PM: DROUGHT’S OVER

It was nearly 40 minutes of playing time in the making, but GWS finally has another goal.

The Giants were stunned by Adelaide to be held scoreless for over a quarter after kicking four goals straight in the first term.

Josh Kelly was the man to break the drought and now has two majors under his belt.

HT: CROWS-GIANTS SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Izak Rankine SuperCoach owners rejoice (I’m very happy I traded him in this week).

He’s had a monster first half with 21 touches and two goals from four scoring shots to take him to a monster 83 points at half-time.

It comes as Adelaide blitzed GWS with a stunning seven consecutive goals take a 33-point lead into te break.

Crows midfielder Rory Laird has also been impressive with 66 points. Unfortunately for Jordan Dawson owners he has had little to contribute as he falls victim to the dreaded tag with just 23 points, while cheapie Billy Dowling has 26.

For the Giants, Tom Green recovered from his slow start but still has work to do with 41 points, while Lachie Whitfield has had a great first half with 59.

Jack Bowes has been the pick of the SuperCoach performers throughout the first half of this clash with 81 points.

Popular midfielder Zach Merrett had a 41-point second quarter to jump to 64 points, while Cats cheapie Jhye Clark is at his best with 37 points.

In terms of defenders, Essendon’s Jordan Ridley and Nic Martin have 44 and 36 points respectively, while Tom Stewart is on 33.

8:36PM: SO WRIGHT

Essendon has clinched a six-point lead over Geelong courtesy of a great juggling effort from Peter Wright who now has five marks and two goals. Stringer also has a pair of majors.

8:34PM: THIS AIN’T THE EUROS, OLLIE

Ollie Dempsey channelled his inner Kylian Mbappe at the MCG with a nifty finish were redirected the trickling Sherrin goalward with the outside of his boot as his bodyweight fell away. It capped off an exceptional opening half for the young Geelong star.

It comes as Ben McKay has left the field for Essendon after landing awkwardly on his back. He was seen heading down to the rooms and Cameron Ling reported on Fox Footy that club doctors wanted to play it safe with half-time nearing. One to keep an eye on.

8:30PM: CROWS ON FIRE

Adelaide has responded to the Giants in more way than one.

After GWS finished the first term with a run of four unanswered goals, the Crows have booted four on the trot of their own.

They also responded to Riccardi’s hanger with some highlights of their won, particular Rankine’s tough-to-fathom juggling mark where he somehow juggled the footy across his back.

8:25PM: THE PERFECT DROP

Was it intentional? Probably not.

Did it work wonders? Absolutely.

The Dons loomed large as Geelong failed to nominate a ruck for a forward 50 throw-in, and Draper - going it alone in the ruck - made a grab for the footy with both hands but it slid straight through, however Hind swooped on it converted to extend the Bombers lead to two goals.

QT: CROWS V GIANTS SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Goal-scorers Josh Kelly and Ben Keays have been rewarded early from a SuperCoach perspective, with 45 and 43 points respectively.

Popular midfield options Tom Green and Jordan Dawson are both off to slow starts with just 17 and 14 points respectively. Nervous times if you own both like I do.

Lachie Whitfield has rewarded his owners with 31 points, and cheapie Billy Dowling has 11.

QT: CATS V BOMBERS SUPERCOACH LEADERS

Mitch Duncan has made a red-hot start to Essendon’s clash with Geelong and has 47 SuperCoach points at quarter-time.

Popular rookie selection Jhye Clark hasn’t been as prolific with 11 points, while popular defenders Nic Martin and Tom Stewart both sit on 15 points.

Stewart owners will be hopeful of an upturn in form as he started the match in the middle after copping plenty of tagging attention at half-back over the past few weeks.

Zach Merrett has 23 points.

8:03PM: RIGHT ON THE SIREN, RICCARDI FLIES HIGH

The Giants finished the first quarter with a wet sail at Adelaide Oval, and after a slow start they have the last four goals of the game.

The fourth major of the stretch came right on the sirne as Jesse Hogan ran into an open goal and launched the Sherrin into the crowd.

Isaac Cumming, Jake Riccardi and Josh Kelly were the Giants other goal-scorers.

Riccardi’s goal came after he flew high and got a great ride on the defender to pluck a hanger.

It came as Zach Merrett couldn’t pull off a miracle set shot from beyond 50m after the siren against the Cats.

Essendon leads Geelong by six points at quarter time.

7:47PM: KEAYS’ DOUBLE

Talk about threading the needle.

Ben Keays has scored the first major in Adelaide’s clash with GWS, sliding the footy through from an almost impossible angle.

It was very nearly touched by Connor Idun and survived a lengthy score review.

Just a minute later Keays would add the Crows second after converting a set shot from straight in front.

Adelaide leads by 15 with the Giants still scoreless.

7:39PM: DON’T MIND THE WET

In under a minute we’ve seen two cracking goals given the soppy conditions in Essendon’s clash with Geelong.

Jade Gresham nailed a set shot from beyond the arc for the Dons before Mitch Duncan responded almost instantaneously with a goal on the run from 45m out.

Gresham was pumped after the goal and kissed the black tape on his arm, with Cameron Ling noting on Fox Footy’s coverage that it was a salute to his grandfather.

7:33PM: WE’RE UNDERWAY

Essendon’s bumper clash with Geelong is underway in pouring rain at the MCG, while Adelaide’s match against GWS is also underway at Adelaide Oval as this jam-packed Super Saturday continues.

7:18PM: SIDES LOCKED IN

There have been no late changes for the Essendon v Geelong, while Adelaide was forced to bring in Zac Taylor as the sub for his debut on short notice, as Chayce Jones had to miss with back soreness.

Toby McMullin the sub for the Giants while Mark O’Connor is the sub for the Cats and Nik Cox for the Bombers.

7:13PM: FULL TIME SUPERCOACH SCORES

The Suns have held on to win a thriller against the Collingwood Magpies thanks to two late goals by Ben Long and Ben Ainsworth.

7:05PM: PIES HIT THE FRONT

Noah Anderson’s last five minutes have been arguably his best of the night but it hasn’t stopped the Pies hitting the lead.

Anderson sits on 136 SuperCoach points but as we expected the Pies to come, Nathan Kreuger kicked his first goal of the night to give them a one point lead.

6:55PM: DAICOS, DE GOEY ENOUGH SAID

Nick Daicos hits the 30 possession mark for the game with his second goal as he has kicked the Pies to within four points, taking him to 121 SuperCoach points.

It was less than a minute after Jordan De Goey kicked one from just inside 50, from the boundary, taking him past the 100 mark.

6:49PM: HERE COME THE PIES

Everyone was waiting for Nick Daicos to step up and he has lifted in the fourth quarter, adding to his three quarter time score as the Pies close the gap to 16 points.

The only concern is John Noble has been taken down for a potential HIA which will mean he is out for the rest of the game.

6:35PM: THE KING HAS RETURNED

Ben King’s welcome back to the Suns line up has been a great one as the Suns are looking to claim their fourth win against the Magpies.

But the first three quarters belong to Sam Flanders who sits on 118 SuperCoach points with Anderson (93) and Witts (90) closing in on the hundred mark.

Joe Richards has been subbed into the game for the Pies while Beau McCreery has been subbed out with a calf injury.

Flanders has 26 disposals to his name, leading the possession getter on the ground while King has the most goals for the night with 11 minutes to go until three quarter time.

6:10PM: DAICOS KICKS STARTS THE THIRD

The ball has lived in the Pies forward half to start the third quarter and was only a matter of time with Bobby Hill having a few shots on goal early.

But it was the jet Nick Daicos who kicked the opening goal of the third quarter as the Pies kick within 11 points.

5:45PM: HALF TIME SUPER COACH LEADERS

Sam Flanders has had an incredible first half, sitting on 91 SuperCoach points at half time.

5:34PM: SUNS RUN RAMPANT

Gold Coast have blown it out to a 21 point lead midway through the second quarter as four of the top five possession getters sit in red and yellow.

Flanders (20), Anderson (19), Miller (14) and Holman (12) lead all comers with only Nick Daicos (12) and John Noble (11) the only Collingwood players to reach double digits.

5:16PM: PIES TAKE LEAD INTO QUARTER TIME

A couple of late goals to the Magpies gifted them a one point lead at quarter time as Suns midfielder Sam Flanders had his own ball in the first quarter.

Flanders finished the quarter with 13 disposals, one goal, a mark, a tackle and four clearances.

4:57PM: OH FLANDERS!!!

Never mind worrying about if Nick Daicos can take on the Bont’s efforts from today, Suns’ Sam Flanders has had a better first 20 minutes.

Flanders currently sits on nine disposals with one mark, four clearances and a goal, sitting on 57 SuperCoach points, where the Bont was only on 31 at quarter time.

4:43PM: SUNS SHINE EARLY

Xerri (135), Comben (112) and now Darcy Tucker (100) have all cracked the triple figures with Sheezel just four points away as the Roos keep pushing with five minutes to go.

4:05PM: BONT CLOSES IN ON BREAKEVEN

Coming in with 143 needed to breakeven, but under an injury cloud, it was going to be touch and go if the Dogs skipper was going to get close to that score.

Half way through the last quarter, the bont sits on 138 SuperCoach points, just five short with plenty of time to go.

3:46PM: THREE QUARTER TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS
