Nick Daicos led all comers at the MCG, giving himself every chance of claiming his first Brownlow Medal.

Young demon Judd McVee has been tasked with the tag on Daicos, but it wasn’t enough as he claimed two goals to accompany 40 disposals.

Daicos was the most popular VC option for SuperCoaches in Grand Final week.

A 30-minute weather delay wasn’t the only drama to ensure at the MCG, either.

Kysaiah Pickett faces the prospect of a second successive opening round on the sidelines with his second-quarter bump on Collingwood captain Darcy Moore certain to attract match review assessment.

The Demons would have been hoping the fact that Moore was going to ground as Pickett came in late might have helped him, but that argument could be quashed by the fact that the Collingwood defender left the field for an assessment.

Moore was then subbed out of the game for Finlay Macrae soon after, which will almost certainly count against Pickett.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

DAICOS DELIVERS

Nick Daicos has delivered once more. Despite a minor rough patch in 2024 after facing taggers, he has finished on a high with a whopping score of 186 and a potential Brownlow to come.

His average of 114 for the year is lower than that of last year’s 116.3, but not by much.

He remains a SuperCoach lock for 2025 and is set to earn a second All-Australian blazer in only his third year.

For those in SuperCoach Grand Finals, he may well be the match winner, with 17.7% of all coaches able to claim double points using the vice-captain loophole.

21% of the top 1% can do the same - will this see an underdog claim the #1 rank?

PICKETT IN TROUBLE?

Kysaiah Pickett may once again miss the start of the season if he faces time on the sidelines following a high bump on Pies skipper Darcy Moore.

An average of 71.5 this year is the highest of his career, and the prospect of further midfield minutes may have thrusted him into SuperCoach contention for 2025.

2025 WATCHLIST GROWS

Wil Parker has joined the 2025 watch list after an impressive 100-point outing, while SuperCoaches will have to decide whether to place Jack Billings (85) on the never again list, or whether to roll the value dice once more.

Ed Allan ($123,900) also worked hard and could be the future of an aging Pies rotation, ending on 94 points, while Joe Richards (74) could be considered even if he is to swap the black-and-white for the prison bars.

Max Gawn (122) has been solid, but will it be solid enough to continue his own All-Australian form?

He wore down the red-hot Cameron, winning the hit outs 25-16 and limiting him to only 92 points.

Can he back it up in 2025, or will he finally be replaced in SuperCoaches ‘set and forget’ structure?

FT SuperCoach Analysis

Nick Daicos (186) didn’t quite reach the heights of a double-ton, but coaches will take his score and run - especially those who entrusted him with their prized VC label.

Gawn recovered from a poor first quarter to finish on 122, which will relieve owners who needed him to perform after a 97 last week.

Pendlebury (102) and Sidebottom (108) continue to remain consistent, while Pickett (111) showed glimpses of how he can score at his best.

The young pies also stood out in a dominant performance, while Cameron (92) faltered late.

10.43PM: YOUNG PIES SHINE
Parker (103), Allan (91) and Richards (73) have all performed solidly today, and have provided a glimpse in to the future for Pies fans and SuperCoaches alike.

Allan in particular is bound to gain more midfield minutes in 2025.

Meanwhile, Daicos is yet to reach 200, sitting on 187.

Razor Ray gets to call one more deliberate as Quaynor rushes the ball over the boundary line, allowing Pickett a chance to score.

After 386 games, there is one minute left in his esteemed umpiring career.

10.31PM: GAME ON

Both teams have returned to the field, and the final minutes of this match will now commence.

Razor Ray open proceedings with a ball up.

Will Collingwood feed the ball to Daicos, confirming his three-vote outing, or will Melbourne make one last resurgence?

10.01PM: WEATHER DELAY

This match will be suspended for a minimum of 20 minutes following extreme weather at the MCG.

If lightning occurs within 10km, this pause in enacted.

If the delay in under 40 minutes, a warm up of five minutes ensues - if it is over 40 minutes, players are allowed an eight minute warm up.

After 60 minutes, discretion will kick in and the AFL can call off the contest.

If this occurs, final scores will stay as it is beyond half time.

9.52PM: WHERE’S VINEY?

With Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver both sidelined, Sidebottom has heavily restricted Viney, who has had only 11 disposals.

This would be his lowest since 2019 if the COVID-affected 2020 season is excluded.

Gawn has just broken the ton, sitting on 102 with ten minutes to play, while Daicos has 156 points - a huge night out for the Brownlow front runner.

9.49PM: 2025 WATCH

The rain is falling, a Melbourne victory is all but out of reach, and Collingwood won’t win by the required 100 points ...

So what better to do than turn our eyes to 2025?

Wil Parker kicked his first career goal tonight, and sits on 89 points.

He’s priced at $119,000, but with a BE of -2, will now be more expensive next year.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis

It’s all Daicos at the ‘G, as he leads the SuperCoach scoring by a fair margin. Will it be enough to confirm his first Brownlow?

The rain is now pouring in Melbourne, which will make for a scrappy final term.

Despite this posing a challenge to Gawn (90), he should still crack the ton.

Billings (68) has been commendable - at $260,600, will it be enough for SuperCoaches to go there again?

9.24PM: DISCO AND DAICOS

Daniel Turner keeps Melbourne in the game, while Daicos all but confirms his three votes with another goal.

He currently sits in 138 points, and could well shape the outcome of many SuperCoach Grand Finals.

A shout out to Tom McDonald, too, who has saved two goals this quarter, and sits on 81 points for his efforts, overtaking Gawn (78).

9.14PM: ANOTHER ONE

Darcy Moore has too been subbed out after failing a concussion test, with Fin Macrae coming into the contest.

This may have huge ramifications as to whether Pickett will once again start the season on the sidelines come 2025.

9.09PM: SUB ACTIVATED

Jack Billings recorded the first goal of the term to give Melbourne every chance to recover from it’s first-half embarrassment, but disappointing news surfaces for the home side with Jake Bowey (ankle) ruled out.

Bailey Laurie replaces him in the action.

HT SuperCoach Analysis

While McVee successfully nullified Daicos in the second quarter, halving his disposal output from 12 to six, the latter remains on 91 SuperCoach points at the main break.

This is sure to provide a huge advantage for the 17.4% of coaches who have vice-captained the star.

Gawn redeemed himself after a sub 20-point first quarter to become Melbourne’s score leader.

Pendlebury (69) and Salem (61) have been immense for their respective sides, while Cameron (67) exerted his influence around the ground.

8.37PM: DEES HIT BACK

If you enjoy watching the score worm, you will see it starting to get a little more lively as Melbourne works it’s way back into the contest.

Daicos continues to amass possessions, but his influence has been nullified by McVee’s tag.

The home side’s defensive efforts are about to get even harder now, though, with Jake Bowey receiving treatment on a right ankle complaint.

Christian Salem sits on only 50 points, but has been the Demons’ best player, with Jack Viney facing a Steele Sidebottom tag which has restricted him to only three disposals.

8.31PM: RICHARDS STRIKES

A popular rookie this year, Joe Richards hits the scoreboard.

He could be playing his last game at the Pies, with Port Adelaide reportedly interested in the Pies forward.

He currently sits at $227,900.

Meanwhile, Melbourne have 13 players who haven’t touched the ball thus far.

Gawn, however, has salvaged a dour first half to sit on 43, and could be on track for a ton by half time.

8.24PM: TAG WATCH

Judd McVee has gone to Nick Daicos ... will he be able to nullify the young star and Brownlow favourite?

After making the extended squad, McVee narrowly missed out on making the final AFLPA 22 under 22 team this year.

8.21PM: CAMERON ON TOP

With a three-round average of 136, Cameron is on track for yet another huge score as he adds a goal to his outing.

Meanwhile, Kade Chandler has broken the Pies’ run of goals with a classy snap.

The most popular vice-captain, Daicos is rewarding those who had faith.

Darcy Cameron also proving to be an important POD for those in Grand Finals, while Pendlebury just keeps on going.

On the flipside, Gawn will be leaving owners nervous - failing to break in to the top ten and being evidently outplayed by Cameron.

8.04PM: IS IT ON?

Is the 100-point margin just a pipe dream, or could it actually become a reality?

The Pies have complete forward half dominance, and if they were able to win by 100, all it would take would be for the Blues to lose by 100 ...

It’s another goal to Sidebottom, but it’s Bobby Hill (48) who leads the way alongside Daicos (42).

7.59PM: MARKING IT’S TERRITORY

Collingwood is marking it’s territory in the air tonight, winning hitouts 10-2 and marks inside 50 6-0.

They lead every metric bar tackles and tackles inside 50.

Meanwhile, Gawn has notched only 16 points, but there remains six minutes to play ...

Unfortunately, Razor Ray isn’t able to earn SuperCoach points.

7.52PM: DECIMATED DEES

At the beginning stages, the talent missing from Melbourne’s defence following the late exclusion of Jake Lever is apparent.

SuperCoaches will be hoping it is Max Gawn who can save the day ...

The current SuperCoach leader Nathan Cadee will be relying on a huge score from Gawn as he attempts to hold on to number one spot.

7.49PM: RECTIFIED

After the early turnover, Daicos rectifies any points lost with a 50m free kick for and a goal.

Scott Pendlebury (23) leads all comers - will the veteran take much-needed Brownlow points from his heir apparent?

7.43PM: ALMOST, DAICOS

It was almost a dream start for Nick Daicos owners, as he streamed inside fifty again following a goal of the week nomination last round.

He is the most popular VC option this week, with 17.4% of all coaches, and 21.1% of those in the top 1% hoping he will go big one last time this year.

7.35PM: DEE DOWN, SUBS NAMED

Melbourne has lost intercept star Jake Lever to illness for its last game of 2024 against Collingwood.

Lever has been replaced by Taj Woewodin in the Dees’ side to face Collingwood.

Bailey Laurie and Finlay Macrae have been named as subs.

It is also fan-favourite umpire Razor Ray’s final game.
