SuperCoach 2016: Richmond’s greatest team of all time

RICHMOND hasn’t delivered a lot for its fans over the past 13 years, but it has been great for SuperCoach.

RICHMOND hasn’t delivered a lot for its fans over the past 13 years, but it has been great for SuperCoach.

The Tigers have given us the No. 1 scoring defender ever and can also claim the highest-scoring ruck combination, plus one of the great all-time SuperCoach players.

Brett Deledio made his debut in 2005, two years after Champion Data ranking points were born, and within three years had recorded a season-long average over 100 points.

And he has stayed there ever since, along the way being available as a premium pick in the midfield, defence and forward line.

The Tigers star is averaging 99 so far this season with eight rounds to go — can he make it nine years in a row?

Champion Data has placed him in the midfield in its Greatest Richmond SuperCoach team based on career averages since 2003.

His career average of 104 is the fourth-highest of the midfield group, which is led by Mark Coughlan, who dominated before being cruelled by injury.

The defence is led by Joel Bowden, who averaged 128 from 2003 until his retirement in 2009 and famously scored 173 points in a game in which his Melbourne opponent Russell Robertson kicked seven goals.

The Tigers are the only team to field a ruck combination who both boast 100-plus averages in Brad Ottens and Ivan Maric.

Ottens played two seasons at Tigerland in the ranking points era before being traded to Geelong to kick-start a rebuild — something that might be in the back of the minds of Richmond’s list managers right now.

Up forward the Batman and Robin duo of Matthew Richardson and Nathan Brown join forces again with Jack Riewoldt joining the Super Friends, while whipping boys Kayne Pettifer and Greg Tivendale are also in the Tigers’ best 22.
