Prized St Kilda recruit Jack Silvagni will have to wait until the New Year to enter full training as he nurses a groin injury.
The defender, who crossed to the Saints on a big-money free agency contract, has been put on a tailored program to return to fitness after carrying the injury from Carlton to his new club.
St Kilda confirmed he was in the rehab group due to the groin issue but planned to join in main training after Christmas and the medical staff are pleased with his progress through rehab.
Silvagni has been away from the club this week due to illness.
Fellow free agent ex-Blue Tom De Koning is also steadily building up his loads after a minor calf setback.
Like most clubs, St Kilda creates specific programs for its veteran players in the early stages of pre-season but Silvagni has been specifically delayed.
He had minor adductor surgery in the off-season, as well as in-season hand surgery once the groin concern had ended his campaign.
Silvagni, 27, missed the entire 2024 season due to an ACL injury, he also missed Carlton’s 2023 finals run after a late-season knee sprain.
Despite his injury past, the defender still drew significant interest from Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs before landing at St Kilda.
He joined the Saints on a five-year deal that will earn him about $4m.
Following a shift to defence in Michael Voss’ side, Silvagni played the most consistent football of his career in 13 games to start 2025 before injury struck.
