Ross Lyon has been a key member of Triple M’s Sunday rub team, but as he returns to coaching, how will they cover the hole his departure will leave?

Ross Lyon’s return to coaching could result in a shrinking of the Footy Classified desk.

Lyon has been a revelation on the Channel 9 Wednesday night show over the past two years and his departure back to St Kilda as coach is set to trigger a major shuffling of the decks on the popular footy show.

Long-time panellist Caroline Wilson had already flagged she would be stepping down from the midweek edition to focus solely on the Monday night show.

Before Lyon got seduced back to Moorabbin, there was a plan to not replace Wilson and just go with host Eddie McGuire, Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd and the former St Kilda and Fremantle coach.

With no obvious candidates around with the same analytical brain and kudos which Lyon brought to the table, there is a sense the show may go down a more news breaking track with journalist Damian Barrett introduced to the line-up.

Barrett, who also features on the Sunday Footy Show panel, has been a regular on Footy Classified over the past decade. Fellow journalist Sam McClure is another option.

The Monday Footy Classified line-up will remain the same with Craig Hutchison in the hosting chair alongside Kane Cornes, Lloyd and Wilson.

Over at Triple M they are also throwing a lot of balls in the air given they lose Lyon and Wayne Carey from the high-rating Sunday Rub team.

Carey was let go by the network after his white powder scandal at the Perth casino, which opened up two slots over the weekend.

He was replaced on the Saturday afternoon show late in the season by St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt, who would be favourite to make that a permanent gig next year.

But he is unlikely to back up on Sundays given his Fox Footy workload, which leaves Triple M with a sizeable hole to fill.
