Kane Cornes is in mid-season form already as he took aim at the West Coast Eagles on Monday morning.

And this time around it was the Eagles playing group who drew the ire of the fun police for costumes they rocked ahead of an intra-club match on Saturday.

The Eagles are making a tradition out of wearing outlandish get ups for the final pre-season hitout and did so again over the weekend.

From Tim Kelly rolling in as NBA legend Allen Iverson to Elijah Hewett and Reuben Ginbey dressing up as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, the Eagles players went all out.

But Cornes wasn’t happy about the display of fun from the playing group who finished the 2023 season on the bottom of the ladder with three wins.

“I’m completely going to be on an island with this and I’m happy to be on an island on my own,” Cornes acknowledged on SEN Breakfast.

“Pull up your socks West Coast Eagles, who turned up to their internal trial all wearing the most ridiculous outfits you have ever seen.

“It’s a takeoff of the NBA, it’s a bit of fun, I get it, but there were players with overalls with nothing on underneath, there was players dressed as superheroes, there was suits with beanies, there were Hawaiian shirts. It was ridiculous.”

Cornes said the spectacle was made worse when you factored in just how poorly the club has performed over the past two season.

“For a club that has won five games in the last two years, I want a bit more professionalism and an attitude that speaks to that,” he said.

“It’s not Mad Monday, it’s the first day of your season and we don’t need you dressing up like superheroes and being photographs and plastered all over social media. Lets get serious.”

The Eagles’ intra-club hitout was marred when 2023 draftee Clay Hall limped from the track following a tackle from Elliot Yeo.

Hall was helped from the ground by trainers, but the Eagles remain hopeful scans will confirm only a low-grade ankle injury.

“I hate seeing it,” Eagles teammate Jayden Hunt told reports post-match. “It happens in pre-season, the way we’ve got to push ourselves – which we have to do – one or two are going to go down, I think that’s league-wide.

“It is definitely heartbreaking to see because he’s been super, super impressive for an 18-year-old around the ball and he’s also the last couple of weeks exploded out of stoppage, which is so good to see.

“I’ll know he’ll be pretty disappointed, but fingers crossed it’s not too bad.”

First overall pick Harley Reid showed flashes of brilliance throughout the contest in promising signs for Eagles supporters.
