‘He’s so angry’: Report hints Jordan De Goey is fuming

Jordan De Goey’s saga has been flipped on its head by suggestions the Collingwood star has privately gone cold on the club.

The Jordan De Goey saga appears to have taken another dramatic turn with suggestions the Collingwood star is angry at his own cub.

De Goey’s future has become more clouded by the day this week following his Bali nightclub video scandal which saw him issued a suspended $25,000 by the football club.

De Goey has been granted personal leave by the club as he deals with the fallout of his mid-year trip overseas.

De Goey and the club on Friday issued a video message in which he apologised for his actions.

That video followed his original comments in a club statement where he said: “The actions shown in the video footage are disrespectful and I accept that I have betrayed the trust the club showed in me”.

That statement was a dramatic backflip from his first statement posted on Instagram where he hit out at media outlets for “the relentless pursuit and persecution of athletes”.

It’s now been suggested De Goey is not happy at the club, with SEN radio reporting he was “forced” into doing the apology message.

Football journalist Sam Edmund said on Saturday he agreed with AFL 360 host Gerard Whateley’s speculation that De Goey is “so angry with Collingwood that he has no interest in walking through the doors right now”.

De Goey will miss the Magpies’ Round 15 clash with GWS at the MCG on Sunday, but is expected to return to the club next week.

It is a significant shift in the story. It comes after Collingwood coach Craig McRae said this week he had not been able to reach De Goey when making phone calls to him in recent days. He said he did speak with De Goey once before the 26-year-old was granted the indefinite leave.

“They call it mental health leave, but it could easily be described as anger leave,” Edmund said.

“It’s not surprising given his statement about ‘this persecution, the relentless pursuit of the media has to stop’. And then you do a stark 180 to then turn around and say you take full responsibility for your actions in a video the Collingwood football club make you do.

“That is a massive about face that the player has had to swallow in a short period of time. Hence the delay in all this coming to light. I think you could absolutely run the narrative that Jordan De Goey is unhappy with Collingwood.”

He said De Goey’s anger is at the club’s “suits” and not the football department.

When asked if De Goey will be at the club next year, Edmund said: “Not unless his anger heals or subsides at Collingwood.

“And there’s a school of thought that maybe Collingwood are just happy to let him go – given there’s the fee agency compensation that would come back the other way.”

Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson and reporter Sam McClure also said this week they believe De Goey will leave the club at the end of the season.

Collingwood chief executive Mark Anderson this week the club has shut down contract negotiations with De Goey until the end of the year.

Reports claim the club pulled a four-year contract extension that was worth up to $3.2 million.

It has prompted the AFL recruitment and free agency market to go into overdrive with St Kilda coach Brett Ratten leading from the front with a public admission the club has interest in pursuing De Goey.

North Melbourne, Geelong and Port Adelaide have also said publicly that would consider recruiting De Goey. Essendon is also reported to be in a position to make a play.

Meanwhile, in the video released by De Goey on Friday night he also apologised for appearing to hide behind his ADHD diagnosis as a reason for his behaviour.

“Obviously you’ve seen with the ADHD stuff which came out, firstly I just wanted to say that’s not an excuse for my behaviour at all,” he said.

“I just wanted to let people know that I was dealing with some stuff on the side throughout the first half of this year and also now. It’s something I’m learning a lot about.

“I’m not a perfect person, I don’t think I ever will be. But hopefully I can make some changes so these mistakes don’t happen again. And just on that I’d just like to apologise once again.”
