Gold Coast Suns striving for more than just ‘glimpses’ of good football

Jarrod Witts and his Gold Coast Suns aren’t satisfied with their form ahead of Sunday’s QClash against the Brisbane Lions.

Gold Coast co-captain Jarrod Witts says “glimpses” of good football isn’t good enough from him or the Suns.

The giant ruckman is striving for consistency in his return to the AFL this year after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

“I’ve got my fitness up to a level where I can impact a game … there are plenty of areas that I can improve on,” Witts said ahead of the Suns’ QClash battle with the Brisbane Lions at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.

And it’s the same for the Suns, who have won two of their five matches this season.

“We’ve shown glimpses of really great footy, and I think we’ve got a clear brand in the way we go about it,” Witts said.

“We want to be a forward half team and keep the ball in our forward half and build pressure through that and get scores off the back of it.

“We’ve shown we can do that, but unfortunately we’ve let ourselves down in a couple of games around the contest, which has been disappointing.

“We’re searching for that consistency, and looking forward to bringing it, starting Sunday.”

Witts described the Lions, who have won four from five this season, as the competition’s “benchmark” team in “quite a few areas”.

“We’ll get tested again and we’re looking forward to it. We’re coming up against a really strong team, and it’s a derby, so we can’t wait,” he said.

The Suns are sweating on the fitness of ruckman Mabior Chol, who is suffering from groin soreness after last weekend’s loss to St Kilda.

Suns physiotherapist Lindsay Bull said: “Mabior had some soreness during the third quarter of the game and it inhibited his performance to the extent that he couldn’t continue.

“We will work with him throughout the week and assess if he’ll be available for selection for Sunday’s fixture.”

The Suns are also hopeful the versatile Jack Lukosius will return from a knee injury.

“We’ll keep building him up throughout the week and assess his progress before determining his availability,” Bull said.
