Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield sidelined for 1-2 weeks with latest hamstring injury

Patrick Dangerfield’s return to play timeline has been revealed — and it is better than first feared. And there are several contenders to replace him, including a potential debutant.

'Bowes more severe than Dangerfield'

Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield may miss just one week with his latest hamstring setback as the Cats breathe a sigh of relief.

Dangerfield, 35, was taken out of the game in the first quarter of Geelong’s 76-point win over Port Adelaide with a right hamstring injury, with scans revealing he will miss the next 1-2 weeks with a low-grade strain.

Utility Jack Bowes was subbed out of the game with his own hamstring issue and his return to play timeline will be determined on Tuesday.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said post-match that Bowes’ injury appeared more severe than Dangerfield’s and that star interceptor Tom Stewart was in line to return for their blockbuster clash against the Western Bulldogs on Thursday night.

“Following scans on Monday, Pat is expected to miss the next one to two weeks with a low-grade right hamstring strain,” Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie said.

“Jack had scans late this afternoon on his right hamstring with a return to play timeline to be confirmed tomorrow once our medical team have had the chance to review the results.”

Second-year small forward Oli Wiltshire was the travelling emergency last round and is among the contenders to re-enter the 23 along with Stewart.

Ted Clohesy responded to his omission with a dominant display in Geelong VFL’s narrow loss to Port Melbourne on Saturday night, tallying 27 disposals, 24 contested possessions, nine tackles, seven clearances, six score involvements, 1.2 and 142 SuperCoach points.

Big-bodied midfielder George Stevens continues to put his hand up for an AFL debut with 31 disposals, 14 contested possessions and 12 tackles, while 2022 first-round choice Jhye Clark had 22 touches and 10 tackles against the Borough.

Dangerfield has been in blistering form in his new-found forward role this season, booting 17 goals in 10 games and producing matchwinning efforts against Collingwood and Adelaide.

The ageing superstar missed nine matches in 2024 from two separate hamstring setbacks on his left leg and he was sidelined for five matches the previous year with another hamstring injury.

The Cats won just six of those 14 matches over the past two seasons with Dangerfield sidelined.
