An Essendon player has been mercilessly roasted on social media after producing one of the most bizarre blunders the AFL has ever seen.

It was a dark night for the Bombers at Adelaide Oval as the Power ran riot to record a 69-point win in front of their raucous fans.

Hind however only made matters worse for the club when he delivered a brainfade for the ages in the final quarter.

After coming on as the sub in the third quarter, the 29-year-old was presented with a golden opportunity to kick the Bombers’ seventh goal of the match.

Hind found himself in wide-open space after collecting the ball just outside the 50m arc with no Port player nearby.

The midfielder strolled towards the big sticks, closing to within 25m out as Port players half-heartedly attempted to close down his space.

But Hind barely even looked towards the goals as he closed in with his eyes darting infield, his kick inexcusably ended up going towards a teammate in the opposing pocket.

His kick sailed to the left of the posts and ended up going out on the full, leaving Channel 7 commentator Brian Taylor perplexed as to what had just unfolded.

“And now he can go all the way to goal, the sub … Wow! Why are you going to the pocket when you’re 25 metres out? He’s kicked it out on the full. Strange decision,” Taylor said on the broadcast.

Fans couldn’t quite believe what they’d seen as the clip whipped around social media.

“This is why we don't play or win finals,” one user wrote.

A second added: “Hey Google, sum up Essendon’s performance tonight.”

One irate Bombers fan wrote: “Nick hind needed to be subbed back out and put that red vest on immediately. That kick will go down as the worst kick in AFL history. That much time. That much space... Does he have marbles in his head?”

The incident mattered little in the grand scheme of the game as the Power blitzed their opponents after quarter time.

A 13 goal to three onslaught saw the Connor Rozee-led Power secure their third win of the season and jump up to third spot on the ladder.

While the Bombers are sitting at 2-2, the demoralising loss left the club with plenty of question marks hanging overhead.

“I think (coach) Brad Scott has got a really good perspective – this would have shocked them a bit. I think they thought they were a little bit further advanced than that,” Garry Lyon said on Fox Footy.

“I think they rolled over far too easily.

“At one stage it looked like this was going to blow out even further which would have been a surprise to everyone at Essendon. Expectation on them was they’d be much more competitive.

“They had three goals at quarter time and kicked six for the evening - that is a massive step back.”
