The AFL career of emerging Essendon forward Tom Edwards has been put on indefinite hold after he went down with an ACL injury at training on Tuesday.
Edwards, 24, was one of the stories of the off-season after he went from teaching in Western Australia to on an AFL list through the SSP.
He flourished on debut two weeks ago, kicking three goals in an otherwise disappointing loss against Adelaide at the MCG.
It’s another cruel blow to Essendon’s forward line, following injuries to Kyle Langford in round one and Peter Wright in a VFL practice match.
Essendon general manager Daniel McPherson said the club was “all feeling for Tom”.
“He’s worked so hard to get his opportunity at AFL level, and so for this to happen so early in his AFL career is devastating for him,” he said.
“Tom will consult with a surgeon tomorrow morning and finalise the course of action from there. The players, coaches and staff will continue to support him during this time.”
