Dane Swan’s Covid-19 restrictions microphone drop

Dane Swan has gone on a Twitter tirade to point out the saddest part of Melbourne’s transformation into an “unlivable” city.

AFL great Dane Swan has launched another attack on Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews after the state’s record-breaking Covid-19 restriction milestone this week.

Melbourne this week overtook Buenos Aires, Argentina, as the most locked-down city in the world during the pandemic, heading into a 250th day under strict stay-at-home health orders.

Victoria also recorded its biggest day of the entire pandemic on Thursday, with 766 new infections and four deaths.

Swan, a Collingwood premiership player and former Brownlow medallist, has been a vocal critic of the Andrews Government since the start of the pandemic 18 months ago — and called for the leader to resign immediately back in June.

He came for the Premier again on Thursday in another series of messages posted on his Twitter account.

“Big congratulations to our leaders who have gone from making melbourne the most liveable city in the world to the most unliveable city in the world in the span of roughly 6 months,” he wrote.

“And they said it couldn’t it be done.”

The 37-year-old also wrote: “Also I hear Victoria is headed to the Guinness book of records. Just another feather in their cap. Congratulations are in order once again. What a legacy.

“Hopefully today Dan pulls out the actual roadmap to all of us getting out of jail. He cannot be serious with the garbage he produced yesterday. Once again Victoria getting embarrassed by its so called leaders.”

Following the Melbourne earthquake on Wednesday, Swan also joked in despair about Melbourne being on its “last legs”, and wrote “the end is near” for the state capital.

Despite his fury at the restrictions, Swan has in recent months also been vocal in publicly urging his social media followers to get vaccinated.

The Collingwood great posted a selfie to his Instagram account of himself after he received his jab, wearing a mask and with a band-aid on his shoulder on the spot where he was vaccinated.

Swan’s post was accompanied by a lengthy caption, in which he said he was sick of feeling “like a prisoner” and explained vaccination is the only path out of lockdowns.

“Yep I just got vaccinated, why?” he wrote.

“Cause I hate being stuck behind my front door being treated like a prisoner in the state I live in.

“And whether we like it or not the only way we are ever gonna be treated like humans again and live a normal life is by all being vaccinated.

“So while we all whinge and complain about being locked down let’s just all go and get the jab so we can get back to being free and living normal lives.”

As far back as May, Swan was venting his anger about Melbourne’s restrictions after watching full crowds of more than 20,000 people attend sporting events in the United States.
