Collingwood player Jordan De Goey has spoken publicly for the first time since his arrest in New York City last week.

De Goey, 25, was arrested following an alleged incident at a rooftop bar. Police initially charged him with “forcible touching” of a 35-year-old woman, however prosecutors have since dropped that charge.

He is still charged with assault, with police alleging he punched and kicked a 37-year-old man.

De Goey has pleaded not guilty, and will next face court on December 8.

De Goey broke his silence in a social media post on Friday.

“On the advice of my counsel, I cannot speak about the incident itself or make comment on the current legal matters that are still ongoing,” he wrote on Instagram.

“At this stage I will not be making any further comment on this matter.”

His lawyer Jacob Kaplan was more forthcoming about De Goey’s plight in a statement attached to De Goey’s post.

“Mr De Goey intends to vigorously defend himself against these unwarranted charges,” Kaplan said.

“Despite the original media reports otherwise, Mr De Goey has not been charged with forcible touching or any sexual assault crimes against a woman. There are no current restrictions on his travel and he plans on using the next few months to continue preparing for the upcoming AFL season.”

The Magpies have stood De Goey down indefinitely over the incident but he continues to train in the US as he awaits his court date on December 8.

“The AFL endorses the Collingwood Football Club’s decision to stand down player Jordan De Goey after he was arrested and charged overnight in New York,” an AFL statement read.

“Collingwood has kept the AFL informed over the course of the day and the AFL’s Integrity Team will continue to work with the club in regard to the incident.”

On November 4, De Goey was pictured on social media for the first time since his arrest, mountain-biking in California with W Training Facility founder Johnny Louch.
