Buckley, Treloar no longer on speaking terms after relationship breakdown

Nathan Buckley has made several extraordinary claims in an interview where he also spills details on his broken relationship with Adam Treloar.

Buckley explains why he really went to the jungle

Nathan Buckley has revealed he and former Collingwood pupil Adam Treloar are still yet to speak to each other following his trade “s***storm”.

The Western Bulldogs star last year broke down in tears during an interview when discussing his messy exit from Collingwood — and the impact it had on his partner, netball star Kim Ravallion.

Treloar said the situation still “pulls on my heartstrings” but insisted he does not want revenge against Buckley or the Collingwood Football Club.

However, Buckley on Monday morning revealed there is still a divide between him and the 28-year-old.

He told SEN the pair have not met and says Treloar has not responded to his attempts to reach out.

It was one of many extraordinary claims Buckley made when grilled by Demons great Garry Lyon when making a first appearance as a new co-host on SEN’s breakfast show.

The Collingwood icon was at the centre of the Magpies’ 2020 trade period disaster when the club pushed Treloar, Jaydn Stephenson and winger Tom Phillips out the door in exchange for trade crumbs.

Despite having signed a five-year contract worth a reported $4.5m with the Magpies in 2019, Treloar was cut loose as the club attempted to ease the pressure on their 2021 salary cap.

Treloar was initially thrown into the trade rumour mill when it was revealed Ravaillion would resume her netball career with the Queensland Firebirds in the Super Netball competition. She moved north at the end of 2020.

The couple’s baby daughter Georgie also moved with Ravaillion. Reports claimed the Magpies administration was concerned Treloar wouldn’t perform with his family living interstate.

There was also a bombshell claim that Buckley told Treloar in a phone call senior players wanted him gone.

Buckley has now revealed he has since made peace with Phillips, but not with Treloar.

“I’ve dropped him (Treloar) a line a couple of times. We’re still yet to speak,” he told SEN.

“I had a coffee with Tom Phillips, he reached out and said, ‘G’day, I’ve been thinking about you a little bit’, and we sat down and had a coffee last week.

“A very similar situation. He still had a year to run on his contract and had to have those conversations with him and he moved on to Hawthorn.

“I still haven’t been able to sit down with ‘Ads’. Now that may or may not happen. I’d be up for it, but it needs to be something that he’s comfortable with as well.

“He’s got a full life, a young family, and at a new club full of football commitments. “If and when the time is right. I’d love to connect with Ads again.”

It was one of several dramatic comments from Buckley, who will feature as a high profile analyst and commentator for Fox Footy this year. Buckley also featured in the recent series of ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’.

Buckley’s revelations on SEN, included:

— He was offered several coaching positions after his decision to step down as Collingwood coach.

— He feels no bitterness towards Collingwood despite reports he faced the sack if he did not resign first.

— He still has a strong relationship with former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, but has not met with him since he stood down from the Collingwood board.

Treloar said last year the hardest part of the saga was watching Ravallion get dragged into the mess.

Ravaillion last year said people behind the scenes created “s***ty lies” about the couple when it was a simple case that the club was motivated by its salary cap pressure.

“It was an emotional rollercoaster,” she said.

“They (Collingwood) started to say to Adam, ‘It’s bad for your mental health, you won’t be able to handle the move’, and Adam said, ‘That’s up to me, it’s not up to you to decide’.

“Then they started to blame it on me. They were making excuses for why he’s going when in actual fact they just wanted him gone. You feel like you trust someone (the club) and then it all goes.”

In June last year, Buckley stepped down as coach of Collingwood after nearly 10 years in the role.

The 49-year-old had coached the side since succeeding Mick Malthouse in 2012, with the Magpies winning 117 games under his guidance with a 54 per cent winning record.

News of Buckley’s separation from former partner Tania Minnici after 18 years of marriage was also splashed across the front pages of newspapers as he endured a year of extreme turbulence.

The marriage breakdown came as a huge shock to the AFL world.

Buckley earlier this month admitted former North Melbourne chairman James Brayshaw approached him in 2021 to discuss a coaching position at the club.
