Brisbane Lions investigation fails to identify supporter who directed racist remarks at Suns player

A Brisbane Lions investigation has failed to identify a supporter who racially abused Gold Coast Suns defender Mac Andrew in Saturday night’s QClash at the Gabba.
The verbal abuse of Andrew, who was born in Egypt to South Sudanese parents, was made public on social media on Sunday by a concerned Lions member who called out another club member for the racist remarks.
It’s understood Andrew did not hear the abuse during the game – part of Sir Doug Nicholls Round which recognises and celebrates the sport’s indigenous players – but was upset after being told about the racist behaviour.
A statement issued late on Tuesday afternoon by the Lions stressed there was “no place for racism in our game”.
“The Brisbane Lions are aware of reports of inappropriate and disgusting racial language directed towards a Gold Coast Suns player by a Lions supporter at the weekend’s Round 10 game at The Gabba,” the statement said.
“The club has conducted an investigation into the reports but as the person sat in a general admission area, we have been unable to identify them.
“There is no place for racism in our game. The club takes matters of racial and anti-social behaviour at our games seriously.
“Such behaviour is at odds with our values and the club we aspire to be.
“Had we been able to identify the person, action such as revoking membership or banning them from attending Lions games in the future would have been taken.”
