‘Anger scale’: Truth behind Collingwood star’s trade situation

Collingwood is at the centre of the biggest trade looming this year and a report claims there is “dissatisfaction” behind the scenes.

Brodie Grundy reportedly does not want to leave Collingwood despite widespread rumours he is certain to leave the club during the 2022 Trade Period.

The star ruckman is reported to have already chosen Melbourne as his next club with the two teams preparing to finalise a deal during the Trade Period, which officially begins on Friday.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin has confirmed the club is interested in Grundy as it prepares to lose Luke Jackson.

Grundy still has five years remaining on a monster $7 million deal which he put pen to paper to in 2020.

Widespread reports claim Collingwood will be forced to pay a significant percentage of Grundy’s wages across the course of the deal.

The Magpies have their eyes set on Brisbane star Dan McStay, who confirmed to the Lions last week he wants to join Collingwood as a free agent this trade period.

SEN journalist Sam Edmund says Grundy is unhappy about the way the situation has played out.

It was reported last week Collingwood initiated the trade by approaching Grundy’s management and telling them they wanted Grundy to move on.

Edmund said Grundy is “dissatisfied” with his club.

“If Adam Treloar was 10 out of 10 on the anger scale with his departure, this isn’t that far behind from my understanding,” Edmund said.

“Brodie Grundy has never been scared to speak his mind and I just wonder when it’s all said and done if he’ll express dissatisfaction with how it’s all played out.

“At the end of the day, he wanted to stay at Collingwood.

“I hope he’ll paint a picture for us when he does get to Melbourne on the other side.”

It comes after Demons legend Garry Lyon this month said recruiting Grundy won’t solve the Demons’ biggest issue — finding another key target up forward.

Jackson, 20, who was a key part of Melbourne’s 2021 premiership win, told the club at his exit meeting he wanted to be traded.

That came after months of speculation, the Dockers have been preparing a monster multi-million dollar contract offer for the star ruckman.

Fremantle is thought to be the leading contender to secure Jackson, although he didn’t nominate a preferred club, leaving the door open for the West Coast Eagles.

The Herald Sun reports the Demons are demanding two picks inside the top 10 to let Jackson, the third pick in the 2019 draft, leave after three seasons with the team.

Collingwood’s plan to essentially swap McStay for Grundy has raised eyebrows — and club icon Nathan Buckley said last week he didn’t understand the move.

“If Brodie Grundy leaves Collingwood and Collingwood brings in Daniel McStay and the net effect on the salary cap is nil, I don’t understand that at all,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“I don’t have any inside knowledge, I don’t know what the plans are or the commitments that have been made, but if that ends up happening, then I can’t see how that is a win.”
