Melbourne will appoint Andrew McQualter as its new midfield coach on Wednesday, replacing Adem Yze after he won Richmond’s senior coaching job.

The Herald Sun can reveal that the Demons told their players and staff late on Tuesday night that the former Richmond interim coach had been given the reins to the likes of Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

The appointment means there will be a straight swap between McQualter and Yze.

Demons players had been expecting their backline coach, Troy Chaplin, to take over the club’s midfield in 2024.

But sources confirmed that it would be McQualter in charge, with the signing certain to be confirmed within the next 48 hours.

Chaplin has been Melbourne’s long-time backline coach. He also crossed from Richmond, retiring from the Tigers as a player in 2016.

McQualter, 37, resigned from Punt Rd on Tuesday and chose not to attend Richmond’s best-and-fairest on Tuesday night.

Demons midfielder James Harmes predicted at a function on Tuesday that Yze would be an offensive-based coach at the Tigers.

Harmes revealed that Goodwin often held him back from playing a more attacking style at the Demons.

“We would like to thank Andrew for his incredible service to Richmond across 10 years,” Tigers footy boss Tim Livingstone said.

“He formed great relationships within the organisation and played a big part in our success over that period.

“Stepping up to be interim coach was a selfless decision by Andrew, and he did a brilliant job leading the team for 13 weeks.

“Andrew moves on to further enhance his coaching credentials, which we respect.

“He is an excellent coach with a long future in the game, and we wish him and his family all the best.”
