AFL: Tom Hawkins signs new Geelong deal

Tom Hawkins is on track to break a Geelong record in 2024 after signing a new deal as he gives an insight into his decision to extend his career.

Champion Geelong goalkicker Tom Hawkins is on track to break the record for most games played by a Cat after signing on for his 18th season at Kardinia Park.

The commitment comes amid public speculation the 347-game veteran was disgruntled with the club about his contract for 2024.

However, the three-time premiership forward told the Cats website on Friday he was “truly humbled” to play for the club he grew up barracking for, and needs to play just nine more games to break Joel Selwood’s record of 355.

“The choices we make in professional sports aren’t isolated, they ripple out and involve lots of other people in your life,” Hawkins said.

“That’s why after each season, after each contract, I always take time to sit and reflect with my loved ones to discuss our future and not only what’s the best for me but also for everyone who’s on this journey with me.

“I was always motivated to continue playing with the Cats. Geelong isn’t just where I work, it’s home.

“It’s the community that’s given me so much, and I feel privileged to have another chance to give back in 2024.”

The five-time All-Australian said the “future looks bright” at Geelong and was looking forward to the “young guys keeping me young”.

“My motivation without question is still there,” the 2020 Coleman Medallist said.

“I will continue as I was always taught, to try and leave this club in a better place than when I started.

“I’m really excited for the challenge that’s in front of the team and myself moving forward into the future.”

Geelong general manager football Andrew Mackie said the 2012 Carji Greeves Medallist remained a “big part” of the club.

“We are excited to have Tom playing on in 2024,” Mackie said.

“His leadership, knowledge, professionalism and on-field contribution, where he continues to be one of the best at his craft, will help drive our club forward.

“Tom is integral to our football program and continues to positively influence our playing group, especially our young forwards and key position players, and we can’t wait to see Tom in the hoops for an 18th season.”
