North Melbourne has secured ruckman Tristan Xerri for the next three seasons to avoid a second-straight year of trade period drama.
Xerri unsuccessfully sought a trade to St Kilda last year after the Kangaroos consistently played journeyman big man Tom Campbell ahead of him despite his strong VFL form.
But the 23-year-old has become the Kangaroos’ No.1 ruckman this season, usurping veteran club great Todd Goldstein as Richmond recruit Callum Coleman-Jones languishes in the reserves.
North’s targeting of Coleman-Jones was another trigger for Xerri to seek a new opportunity elsewhere, but the ex-Tiger has managed only four games to date in an underwhelming start to his career at Arden St.
The Roos never seriously considered the Saints’ trade offer for Xerri, which is believed to have centred around a swap of late draft picks.
Xerri has had a lean few weeks since returning from a foot injury but is still averaging 10 disposals, seven hit-outs to advantage, three tackles and two clearances this year, while sharing the ruck duties with Goldstein.
“I grew up a North supporter and I’ve spent five years here already. It’s a great place, a great club and a great culture,” Xerri said.
“The group here at North is a really young group and in another three years, who knows where we’ll be? I’m really excited and thankful for the opportunity.”
The Kangaroos’ general manager of football performance, Dan McPherson, said he was impressed with Xerri’s ability to cement his position in the senior side.
“His solid pre-season has set him up well and he’s been able to string together consistent performances,” McPherson said.
“There is a healthy competition for spots amongst our ruck group and we’ve been really impressed with the way Tristan has embraced that challenge.
“As a club, we are looking forward to seeing Tristan work on his craft and continue to develop over the next three years.”
