AFL mid-season draft 2021: See every player who has nominated

Nathan Freeman has been dominating the VFL in 2021 but has yet to nominate for the mid-season draft. And time is running out.

Collingwood is showing renewed interest in former Adelaide small forward Tyson Stengle, who appears certain to be handed an AFL lifeline in next month’s mid-season draft.

Stengle again shone brightly in a state game between the SANFL and the WAFL on the weekend and is considered by recruiters to be a standout mature-age prospect.

The 22-year-old logged 21 disposals and kicked 3.3 in the Saturday night’s clash at Adelaide Oval, further sparking mid-season draft interest.

“He’s the best small forward outside the AFL right now,” one club recruiter said.

“He’s going very, very well.”

The Magpies – who currently hold pick No.3 – are believed to be seriously considering a play for Stengle, who would add some much-needed spark in attack.

Originally drafted to Richmond, Stengle spent to past two years with the Crows and played 12 senior games last year.

He was delisted in March following three off-field incidents in eight months, including a drink-driving charge and being caught alongside former Adelaide midfielder Brad Crouch with an illicit drug.

Those close to Stengle say he has worked hard to get his life back on track this year and believe a move out of Adelaide could help.

Stengle is also close with Carlton forward and former Crows teammate Eddie Betts, with the Blues another club believed to have some interest.

When Stengle returned to SA to join the Crows in late 2018, his cousin and new teammate Eddie Betts took him in.

Betts was said to be able to provide life perspective and be a football role model in a family setting.

Stengle moved out on his own when the AFL great was traded back to Carlton late in 2019.

Fellow former Adelaide player Riley Knight had 29 disposals for the SANFL in the state game and is also expected to be selected in the mid-season draft after a dominant start to the year for Woodville-West Torrens.

Stengle and Knight had both not nominated for the draft as of last Friday, but have until May 25 to do so before the June 2 draft.

Former Collingwood and St Kilda midfielder Nathan Freeman is also yet to nominate for the draft and remains uncertain whether he will despite attracting some AFL interest after a strong start to the season for Frankston in the VFL.

Freeman has averaged 41 disposals from five games so far this season, but is understood to be content staying outside of the AFL system.

Other former AFL players who have nominated for the mid-season draft include former St Kilda No.1 draft pick Paddy McCartin, former Collingwood and Adelaide small forward Ben Crocker, former Geelong and Carlton midfielder Darcy Lang and former Essendon forward Josh Begley.

Stengle has also been linked to a move back to Richmond, which originally selected him with pick six in the 2017 rookie draft.
