Carlton has been dealt another cruel blow before the start of the 2024 competition, after a training mishap resulted in a season-ending ACL injury to one of its forward guns.

Carlton has been dealt with a bitter blow on the eve of the 2024 season, with Jack Silvagni suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The 26-year-old utility suffered the injury at training on Thursday and was sent for scans, confirming the injury that will wipe out his campaign.

General manager of football Brad Lloyd said it was disappointing to lose the important Blue.

“Jack had put in such a significant body of work over summer to put himself in a great position to attack the year, so we are all really feeling for Jack right now,” he said.

“While the emotion right now is one of disappointment, it is well known that Jack’s work ethic and commitment to the football club is unwavering, and it is his strong character that will be his biggest strength through his recovery process.

“We will be with him every step of the way through his rehab, and no doubt the entire Carlton faithful will be. With the energy he brings, he’ll continue to have a positive impact around the Club and within the playing group throughout this season.”

It’s a cruel blow for the Blues less than a month out from the first practice match and a heartbreaking injury for Silvagni as he looked to win his spot back within the Carlton team.

The 26-year-old third generation Blue signed a new two-year extension last September, locking him in until the end of 2025.

He had been hoping to regain his spot in the senior side last year after injury kept him out of last year’s finals.

The Blues lost Zac Williams at a similar time last preseason.

Silvagni, the son of club great Stephen and grandson of Serge, weighed up his footy options last year before choosing to stay with the Blues.

Silvagni played 16 games in 2023, averaging 13.6 disposals, four marks, 2.7 tackles and 1.9 inside 50s per game.

He has played 115 games for the club since his 2016 debut season.
