AFL 2022: Latest trade, free agency and contract updates

Jordan De Goey’s scintillating finish to the year didn’t go unnoticed, with the Magpies now tabling a better offer to keep him providing the star midfielder complies with a crucial clause.

Psychic's grand final prediction revealed

Collingwood is hopeful Jordan De Goey will re-sign with the club on a five-year deal that would require him to dodge the controversies that have plagued his career.

The increased offer comes off the back of a brilliant second half of the season.

The Pies had withdrawn an initial four-year, $800,000 a season deal after De Goey’s Bali partying.

But he has responded strongly on field, including two excellent finals, and has kept clear of trouble off it to be rewarded with the fresh deal.

The new offer would have behavioural clauses as a condition of the Collingwood board, which would likely allow him some minor transgressions but no significant missteps.

St Kilda has made a strong and compelling offer of up to five seasons, but believes he needs to come for the right reasons instead of a huge $1 million a season pay packet.

De Goey spoke of his work to improve his behaviour after his latest Bali incident, revealing an ADHD diagnosis he believes contributed to some of his risk-taking behaviour.

The Pies have cap room for De Goey, who has been paid around $750,000 for the past four seasons, and would receive a small raise from 2023 onwards.

It is not known if a pay rise would be factored in with the expected lift in AFL pay as the league sits down with the player union to discuss a new collective bargaining agreement beyond next year.

Pies coach Craig McRae said after the club’s recent finals performance he had even spoken to De Goey’s manager Ryan Vague to urge him to get to work on a new deal with the Pies.

The Collingwood board has made it a condition of his employment that they insert those behavioural clauses.

It seems unlikely they would relent on that hard line stance so if De Goey did leave he would depart for little or no compensation given Dan McStay’s arrival next Friday as a free agent would neutralise any free agency compensation.
