AFL off-season news: Every retirement and delisting for 2021

Gold Coast dropped a bomb when it announced it was delisting Hugh Greenwood, one of its best and most reliable players. But there is a method to the Suns’ madness.

2021 AFL MOCK DRAFT

Gun midfielder Hugh Greenwood along with Rory Thompson and Jez McLennan have been delisted by the Gold Coast Suns, but will be redrafted by the club so it can meet the AFL’s requirement of taking three picks at the draft.

Greenwood, 29, and Thompson, 30, have both agreed to be delisted and then added back to the Suns’ primary list ahead of the 2022 season.

Greenwood has been a success story for the Suns since they lured him to the Gold Coast from Adelaide – averaging over 17 disposals and more than six tackles in his two seasons. He finished fourth in the Suns’ 2020 best-and-fairest award.

McLennan, 21, will be redrafted as a rookie.

In announcing the “temporary” delistings, the Suns said the move would provide the club with further flexibility and opportunity to improve their list and meet the AFL’s draft requirements.

Concessions by the AFL mean that the Suns have a tight list, and general manager of player talent and strategy Craig Cameron said the club had to make the temporary measure.

“We’ve had a deliberate strategy on improving our list over the past four years and that hasn’t changed during this year’s trade and draft period,” Cameron said.

“Having a high number of contracted players, we have had to explore all possible options to comply with AFL requirements.

“I would like to thank Rory, Hugh and Jez for agreeing to this temporary measure which will allow the club to redraft them to our list ahead of next season.”

The Suns hold picks 3, 97 and 115 for the draft.

It comes as GWS re-signed four players and delisted young defender Jacob Wehr, but have promised of redrafting him as a rookie.

Harry Perryman has extended his contract to the end of 2024, Jack Buckley inked a deal to take him to the end of 2023 and rookies Zach Sproule and Jake Stein have re-signed for 2022.

GWS general manager of football Jason McCartney said the club was excited to re-sign the players.

“Harry is an important part of our side and it’s been great to see his journey over the past few years. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can produce after recommitting for another two years,” he said.

“Jack is also one that has flourished over the recent years and showed this season how important a player he can be for us.”
