Former Adelaide captain Taylor Walker has said he has concerns around the proposal to restart the AFL season in different state-based hubs.
In a bid to resume the 2020 season, put on hold after just one round because of the coronavirus pandemic, the AFL could send multiple teams to be isolated in a town or city to play a bunch of matches in what has been termed a “quarantine hub”.
AFL football operations boss Steve Hocking told News Corp this was one of “at least 10” different scenarios as to how the league could play the remaining 144 matches in the season.
Yet, the Crows forward spoke on Triple M on Tuesday morning and said the hubs could prove a great risk to all the players involved.
“I reckon if you went and had 6 teams in one hub, if the coronavirus did happen to get inside it would spread quite quickly and it’d get across six teams,” he said.
“Rather than it get inside one club and it just infect them.”
Walker’s former teammate and AFL Players Association president Patrick Dangerfield echoed his concerns on SEN.
“I’m not sure how comfortable I would be with it,” he said.
“We so often hear people talk about sportsmen as role models, well, this is something that’s affecting absolutely everyone within the country, so our role to that is to do as we’re told and to abide by the government guidelines.
“It’s more and bigger than just sport, so let’s get through it first and make logical decisions post.”
