For the first time in the event’s history, spectators were told to stay away as organisers followed strict social distancing measures throughout the day.

Three records fell on the day including in the under 14 girls’ javelin which was won by Mt Carmel’s Jessica Bray who beat the previous record by almost 2 metres with a 36.5m throw.

Davina Cox of St Mary’s is the new record holder in the U14 girls’ shot put, while Fahan’s Ella Atkins ran a record time of 4 Min 55sec to win the girls U16 1500m.

Guilford Young’s Jackson Mellor – winner in the Male Open shot put with a throw of 13.68cm – said he was pleased to post a personal best throw on a fun day of competition.

“It was a cool day, and good to see everyone cheer each other on,” he said.

“Hopefully students who haven’t done athletics before might gain a bit of interest out of yesterday’s competition, because I don’t think athletics gets as much recognition as it deserves,” he said.

SATIS’s Emma Johnson said spirits were high throughout the day.

“It was really good for students to be out competing for their school and having the opportunity to do so, particularly this year, when we haven’t had Cross Country and other representative carnivals on,” she said.

“The kids seemed really happy to be out and the staff reported seeing lots of uptake in events.”
