A DEVELOPMENT application from the University of Tasmania for a 30-bed complex at its Sandy Bay campus is now out for public consultation.

The application before Hobart City Council shows each room will have ensuite facilities plus access to a common room.

It notes students will receive “meal vouchers” at Christ College’s Pepperz restaurant as part of their accommodation package.

The plan is part of a 180-bed accommodation village made from shipping containers announced by the university before Christmas.

A separate application has already being lodged for the 150 bedrooms.

The new complex will be located adjacent to John Fisher College within the University of Tasmania’s accommodation precinct for five years and is in response to a critical housing rental shortage in Hobart and an immediate need for additional accommodation in 2019.

A series of new pedestrian paths will be built to link the accommodation units to John Fischer

College as well as College Rd.

“A ‘green spine’ will be developed as the main thoroughfare of the campus incorporating a

university green, sporting facilities and intimate landscaped meeting areas,” the report from All Urban Planning says.

“Pedestrian access will be improved and the internal ring road will be closed in part to

prioritise pedestrian movement.”

A UTAS spokesman said it was on track to have the 180 beds ready for use by the beginning of semester two, pending approval by the council.

The university has bought a series of properties in Hobart’s CBD in the past four years, splashing almost $80 million across properties on Argyle St and Melville St, the former Forestry building, the MidCity, Fountainside and Theatre Royal hotels.

This will add an extra 300 student beds to the university’s Hobart portfolio.

It has its media school, medicine school, a future performing arts centre and the School of Nursing and Midwifery in the Hobart city precinct.
