THE sale of a 1970s brick home in Hobart’s Sandy Bay could push the amount so far raised from Anglican Church property sales in Tasmania to almost $2 million.

The four-bedroom house on Coolabah Rd, used by the church as a rental property, is under contract, awaiting the sale of another property.

It is expected to fetch more than $780,000.

Petrusma Property agent Mike Speakman said it was a good retro house that had a little more interest than other properties currently on the market.

If the sale proceeds it would become the second Anglican Church property to sell since the final list of 73 was announced by Bishop Richard Condie in December.

The church synod voted to sell off church properties to fund their National Redress Scheme commitments.

St Mary’s Anglican Church Hall, in the Central Highlands community of Gretna, was sold n early January above the asking price of $180,000. Six properties were also sold prior to December 1 as they were already in the sale process prior to the redress scheme announcement.

It’s estimated more than $1.05 million has already been raised from the sale of the seven Anglican properties. The Sandy Bay home would take the amount past $1.8 million, 39 per cent of the total figure the church was hoping to raise for redress from property sales.

When the proposal was first announced in June last year, the Diocesan Council initially hoped to raise $4.7 million for redress from the sale of 108 properties.

Another $2.8 million for redress will be raised by diverting 25 per cent of investment funds, and $1.1 million will by funded by direct contributions from parishes.

Bishop Condie said the sale of the remaining 65 properties would take place in a strategic and staged process over the next two to three years.

Only 25 per cent of the money raised from the sales will go to funding redress.

A portion will be used for new ministry development and an amount will be returned to the parish.
