A MODERN home on a sheep farm on Bruny Island, a floating sauna, a Tamar Valley winery cellar door and the new Cradle Mountain visitor centre are among the winners of this year’s Tasmanian Architecture Awards.

Held on Saturday night in Launceston, the awards recognise architectural excellence in categories such as public architecture, residential, commercial, education, and sustainability.

Cumulus Studio was a big winner taking out both the Alan C Walker award for public architecture and the Colorbond award for steel architecture for their work in designing the new Cradle Mountain visitor centre.

The first of a series of buildings envisioned as part of a master plan for Cradle Mountain, the centre provides a new gateway to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Cumulus Studio also won the Dirk Bolt Award for urban design for the Cradle Mountain gateway precinct and a commercial architecture award for the cellar door for Stoney Rise Wine.

The Colin Philp Award for commercial architecture went to Circa Morris-Nunn Chua for their work on the boutique Salamanca hotel Moss 25, which was described by the jury as an exemplary reuse of “disused city space to create a rich environment that contributes to a denser and vital city”.

The small project architecture award was taken out by Licht Architecture for the floating sauna at Derby.

A popular social media location, the North-East attraction was described as an “intriguing exemplar for future sustainable tourism development in the region”.

The Australian Institute of Architects’ Tasmanian chapter executive director Jennifer Nichols said all the projects showcased how good design could enrich community spaces and world-class travel destinations.

“It’s timely that this year’s awards have highlighted some of the exemplar new tourism buildings in Tasmania,” she said.

“As domestic tourism opens across the country, Tasmanian architecture is truly bringing its ‘A game’ and helping to show off our state.

“These projects enhance the natural landscape and add to a rich tourism experience.”

All winners will be entered in the national architecture awards.
