A UNIQUE tourist park and accommodation facility developed by Mona on the foreshore at Berriedale is a step closer after plans passed the first stage of the approval process.

Mona owner David Walsh intends to lease the Berriedale caravan park site from the Glenorchy City Council, which has endorsed his plans and will now advertise for public comment before the project undergoes a formal development approval process.

Glenorchy City Council had advertised for expressions of interest for the site and Mayor Kristie Johnston said the submissions were of an extremely high quality.

Council officers recommended support for the Mona development.

The proposed Mona Accommodation Berriedale development will provide a range of visitor accommodation and will cater for up to 50,000 visitors annually.

It will feature on-site retro caravans, distinctive accommodation pods, camping and campervan sites, communal cooking, laundry and activity facilities, and administration and service buildings.

The development will be fully funded by Mr Walsh.

Mona business manager Mark Wilsdon said: “Mona is pleased to have been chosen by the Glenorchy City Council to take our plans for the Berriedale Treasure Island Caravan Park to the next phase.

“We want to hear the public’s response to our ideas. We’ve worked closely with two local companies who are well known for their strong design and sensitive developments ... and we are looking forward to working with Glenorchy City Council on the next stage to finalise our ideas.”

Alderman Johnston said Council and Mona were committed to extensive public consultation regarding the development.

The plans will now go on public display and submissions invited from the community.

Subject to final approval, the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016.
